I love these names! We are going for old Norse names to honor our heritage and I’m not worried about people thinking we love the Vikings show (which we do, but I think we can do it differently!)
i am from Germany and I think it is so funny how Anders is a name in Scandinavia because anders means different in german, doesn't get more hipster than that does it haha
That's the reason I can't use it. I'm an Australian engaged to a German here and I used to love that name, but it just wouldn't work. The same with Stellan.. klingt wie: stell an... the struggle is reaaal
We have a little Emil, three months old. His dad is German and we live in Australia. In Australia it's usually pronounced eh-MEEL, but the German side of the family pronounce it very similar to the Swedish way you pronounced it. I love it so much.
Just discovered your channel last week! If my fiancé and I eventually have a boy, we are naming him Bjorn, but we will add either the ø or the ö accent to conform to the proper language pronunciation. He has Norwegian in him, and I am Swedish. Either way we are obsessed with the name! Thanks so much for the great content 😁
Thank u so much Madam, u just inspired me to finally know what should I name my unborn kid if it’s a boy 🙏🏻. This video is so helpful and I will definitely show this video to him someday when he grows up to let him know where his name came from 👍🏻
*Anders* is a Scandinavian variation of Andreas, it is of Greek origin (Andrew in English) and it was used for the first time in Sweden in the late 14th century, well after the Viking age. Though Andreas was used for the first time in the 12th century. *Rasmus* is a Scandinavian variation of a Erasmus, it is of Greek origin and it was used for the first time in Sweden in the late 15th century. *Henrik* is a Scandinavian variation of the name Heinrich, it is of German origin and it was used for the first time in Sweden in the early 13th century. *Emil* is a German spelling of the French name Émile, it is of Latin origin and it was used for the first time in Sweden in the mid 18th century. *Nils* is a Scandinavian variation of the name Nikolaos, it is of Greek origin (Nicholas in English) and it was used for the first time in Sweden in the mid 15th century. *Olander* is a Swedish surname, there's not a single person in Sweden who currently bears the name. While Surnames are quite often given as given names in English speaking countries it is unheard of in all other western countries. *Isak* is how the name Isaac is spelt in Scandinavia and a lot of other countries in Europe, it is of Hebrew origin and it was used for the first time in Sweden in the 12th century. *Bo* , *Alvar* and *Björn* (spelt Bjørn in Denmark and Norway) are the only old Norse names.
Love the name Bjorn, especially since my mums name is Ursula, as in Ursa the bear constellation. I think that would be such a great way to honour her if we had a baby boy. Not sure my fiancé would go for it as we've both known quite a few Bjorns. We have our list of baby girl names but don't have a list for any boys the future might hold. Love these name videos. Would be great to see another one on traditional boy names that are less popular as we aren't very 'out there' with our name preferences. Love from Cape Town, South Africa
How fun is Henrik!? I've heard of Hendrik, but Henrik is awesome! I'm definitely jealous of your husbands name! Nils is awesome too, it's close to Niall which I'm obsessed with :) I love Olander, I've always loved Leander and it's close, but in Canada we pronounce "er" VERY harshly and it just doesn't have the same ring to it...
In Germany many people have Skandinavien names...in the northern part it is so popular that every second child has got one like Matilda, Nils, Henrik, Mats, Emil, Michel, Finja, Tilda...
jsyk these are english pronunciations. in norwegian/swedish bjørn has an ‘er’ sound. byern. and bo is an ‘or ’ sound. and Isak is an ‘ee’ sound. Just so you know!
My cousin wants to marry a Swedish guy so she could have a little Alvar, haha! My nephew, born on Saturday, is called Halvor (after my grandfather), which sounds a lot like Alvar :) I wanted a little Henrik, but my cousin's son is a Henrik which I meet too much to actually take the name. But I also love Erik, which is my other grandfather's name. Either Erik for a boy, or Erika for a girl. :)
We had a cat named Nils. The pronunciation was a little different though - knee-ls with an S sound rather than a Z sound. Love it but don't think I'd reuse for a son.
There´s another typical swedish boy name and that is Ulf, meaning Wolf. My own name, Leif I(it+s not prounaunce Leaf it´s Leijf) is supposed to be over 1000 years old. Taken from one Viking cheif. But what it means, you have to it look since I haven´t found any explenation other than that about that Viking king. Another common swedish boy name is Daniel.
Ive only heard Olander as a lastname in Sweden :) Other typical names common in Sweden are: Andreas, Jonas, Robin, Fredrik, Karl, Johannes. Always loved Nils, so cute, but people with that name are many Times called Nisse which im not too crazy about.
i had a boy Jonathan Beaujames...... I had brothers Robert (nicknamed Bo) and James threw them together Bo james (Beaujames) but we say the word OH with a B on front for BO
i have been looking for male Scandinavian or even norse names that begin with "M" but have a reeally hard time finding anything. is it just not a common letter used? anyone have suggestions or input?
I love how (especially) England is fangirling over anything scandinavian. I’m danish myself, and i must say that these names, are incredible common here, even old fashioned, so parents don’t call their kids this anymore. Especially Anders, Bo and Henrik. It would be quite odd over here, and you would think you were Talking to a guy in their 40’s and not a child. I personally also found these names boring. But i Can see why different countries finds the names exotic. But to me they are basic and flavourless.
Alisha k hmm, actually Old viking names, or norse names are starting to become popular. But according to danish name statistics, top three most common boy names would be: 1. William 2. Alfred 3. Oscar More modern and unusual (but nordic) boy names would be: 1. Karl 2. Nohr 3. Storm 4. Valdemar (the viking kings of Denmark used to be called this) 5. Lauge 6. Johan 7. Otto These names are all on the top 50 of danish boy names from 2019.

I am part Swedish and a name that occurs quite regularly on my family tree is *Neiles,* which is another form of Nils. Sorry, but you are incorrect in comparing the name Nils to the name Niall, the latter is an Irish form of Neil, but Nils, Niels and Neiles and other forms of spelling is the same as our name Nicholas and means the same as Nicholas. Nils is the shortened version of Nicholas. The surname Nilsson means the son of Nicholas or *Nicolaus* as it is spelt in Sweden. Your husband should have known this. Take it from me as I am a genealogist with 33 years of experience behind me *and* I am part Swedish.
