Great video! You were able to capturer the exhaust sounds from behind the wing minimizing propeller noise. Maybe the best sounding R-1820 video on TH-cam. Let’s you really enjoy the “music” from the Wright R-1820 Cyclones. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. It certainly has gotten many more views than I was expecting. I remember that day at the Chino Airshow. Perfect day. I had just finished filming a flyby and the next thing I knew the wing tip of the B-17 was literally overhead, no one moved me. So I just sat there and focused my camera on the engine. If it looks that close in the video, imagine how close I was in person. They had even put up a rope because a crowd formed but for some reason they let me sit there on the tarmac. I remember thinking the whole time, "Don't say anything, and don't shake the camera." The original is much longer than the clip because no one knew when they were going to turn over the engines. So I filmed for ten minutes and then got what you see. Glad you like it.

Nuttin' like the mesmerizing sound of those big radials! A great way to turn gasoline into noise (music)!

Yes! I like this clip almost more for the audio than the imagery. I was just under the wingtip and got great audio.

and the SMELL, the SMELL of that smoke as she starts up. I was lucky to have been at Duxford (UK) when the film "Memphis Belle" was being filmed in 1990, and got right up close to FIVE of these gorgeous birds as they all started up. The sound...uggghhhhh.... but the SMELL as the collective exhaust wafted around us.....bliss ! Brought a tear to my eyes 5mins later after they all took off and did a low 5-plane "missing man" formation over us🥲

No video does justice to what it takes to make that happen! #4 is timed perfectly!

I totally agree! If only the viewer can be 'right there' like I was,...it inexplicable!

Isn't that a great feeling and sound when that engine rumbles, stumbles, lites off, stumbles then re-ignites.
We bought Lookheeds DC3 a few decades ago. Weekly engines were started etc. When we took possession my Dad and I go up into the cockpit. Dad's multi rated, me a lousy 182 ;). Well I jokingly said, lets take her for a tarmak spin. Dad said get it started, jokingly.
I Look around the panel, click on main power, open the window, holler clear, prime and flipped the switch. The engine started to whir and turn.
Dad reached over switched the engine off, huge smile on his face and jokingly said, you're in the wrong seat, that's my chair. Thanks for the memory reminder

I like how when you start these engines cold they turn into smoke machines

I think it's designed into the engine that oil enters the compression chamber. Especially the inverted ones of course. I actually cut this video down to when they finally fired. They fiddled with those engines for a while. @@ichosolemanuel6048

So, which of the two flyable B-17s with a yellow tail, and yellow cowls, is this?
