Hi, first of all thanks for uploading this very informative series on Big Data, it is really helpful. I have a question like what kind of operations can we perform with unstructured data / binary / image/ video files using the hadoop stack? I have seen examples where they have converted semi structured files such as logs and json to tabular format using regular expressions. But what can we do with video files for examples?
Hey Saikat, thanks for checking out our tutorial! We're glad you found it useful. Here's the explanation to your query: Take for example, if TH-cam which has such a big database of videos, decides that while playing a video in TH-cam you can also click on someone's face and TH-cam will prompt the name of person on whose face you clicked. The best way to implement this is to quantize the video in unit of frames (that is how videos are stored internally) and store them on HDFS. Now, convert each frame to a greyscale image and now all you have is a 2d array on which you can apply some face recognition algorithm and prompt the result to the user. As you will not want to perform the computation when another user clicks it when the particular video has been submitted you can perform your algorithm on the video and store the results. Hope this helps. Cheers!
