Hi everyone! The next chapter of Bond is here and lemme tell you, I LOVED this film. I thought it was a huge upgrade from Dr. No and I loved the mystery of Spectre as well. Sean Connery again cements himself as a fantastic James Bond and the score continues to be amazing.
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

It's personally my favorite of the Connery Bond movies. The next couple are also still good and a lot of fun, but this is where it's at for me. I love the cold war spy thriller vibes this one has. It's an improvement in every way and has some of the best villains of the series imo.
Also, you were correct that they did the title sequence by simply projecting the text on women's dancing bodies.
It did indeed have double the budget of Dr. No.
And yes, the helicopter scene was shot for real. You should really get ready to see a ton of amazing stunts done for real in these movies.

I think this is the best Connery Bond. You're right about the cinematography by Ted Moore who will later get an Oscar for his work on THUNDERBALL. He made the atmosphere of FRWL feel like a gritty spy noir. One thing though, since the film has a lot of dark scenes I couldn't see the image well on your reaction since it's see-,through and all I could see was the bed against the wall. Soon you'll have to see Hitchcock's MARNIE with Sean Connery and my pal Tippi Hedren who gives an amazing performance in one of my favorite and sadly underrated Hitchcock films or as film critic and historian Robin Wood put it 'if you don't like Msrnie, you really don't understand cinema.'

Something to know about the plot of the movie, in the book antagonists were Russian counterintelligence and they still planned to videotape the affair between Bond and Tatiana Romanova. Their intent was to embarrass MI6 at the cost of some low level intel worker, making it look like they lost their agent embroiled in a sex and blackmail scandal, but with MI6 understanding that it was a Russian Intel operation.
The whole thing is kind of far fetched for intelligence work. However, it is important to understand that the Russian counterintelligence office SMERSH that is mentioned in the book was a real agency within GRU Soviet Intelligence since before the KGB even existed. The agency existed during World War II with a narrow mission of weeding out NAZI collaborators in Soviet society.
It was disbanded shortly after the War. Yet author Ian Fleming, who had served in British Naval Intelligence, knew of them from his war service and so incorporated them into the early 007 books. It was only later in the literature franchise that SPECTRE was introduced, in part because Fleming believed the Cold War was winding down in the 1960s; and in part because he was being pitched film deals and wanted to create a fictional organization that could serve as an antagonist and not provoke any foreign animosity.
SMERSH itself has a nasty reputation in history as one of Stalin's Secret Police. And it has been said that they arrested, deported and murdered more political dissenters than they did NAZI sympathizers.

Pedro Armendáriz played Kerim Bey. This was his last film. The producers knew he was terminally when they hired him and scheduled all his scenes first so he could complete shooting before he got too sick. You may want to watch the old adaptation of "Murder on the Orient Express" Sean Connery is part of the cast. Ernst Stavro Blofeld is No. 1 for Spectre.

The helicopter sequence looked real because it was entirely real, except for the final moment after Bond shoots the guy in the helicopter and the grenade goes off - that explosion was a physical miniature model, but it's shot and edited so carefully and rapidly that most people don't notice until they've see it a few times. Extremely impressive work for the era.
FYI, the person in general charge of the special effects was John Stears, who was later in charge of the set effects on Star Wars (1977).

The timing of this reaction is impeccable. 😐
From Russia With Love (1963) and Goldfinger (1964) is considered the high watermark of the Bond Franchise. Every other movie is measured up to these movies.
Fun Fact: Although he had his reservations about the choice of Sir Sean Connery for the part of James Bond, after seeing him in this movie, Ian Fleming was completely won over by the actor. In fact, as a result, Fleming added a Scottish ancestry to Bond's character in later novels.

Some tidbits: The scene where Bond discovers Tanja in his bedroom has since been used to screen test all new candidates auditioning for the role of James Bond...there's BTS footage around of James Brolin and Sam Neill doing it in the 80s. Also the role of Sylvia Trench as Bond's "girlfriend" disappears after this movie, it was originally supposed to be a running gag that they would always be interrupted by James being called to duty while they were making love or romancing, but in the end, the producers dropped that idea.

I look at Dr. No as like a proof of concept and because it was such a huge hit, they threw so much more money and attention this way which sets the standard.
Q's first appearance, the very first Sinister Henchman which becomes a regular staple. Hints at Spectre and yes they're way more sinister in these classic movies. Wait until you meet Blofeld :D

I thought the scene where Grant gets the drop on Bond in the stateroom is one of the best in the franchise. When Grant hits him on the back of the head it really looks like he connects. And the way Bond uses his wits to escape certain death is very tense. It also has one of my favorite lines in a Bond film, "You may know the right wines, but you're the one on your knees!"

    Great reactions dude. 😎👍....
Movie Trivia Facts - 'From Russia With Love' was President John F. Kennedy favorite James Bond novel, so it was only natural that the producers (when they got wind of that) decided to make this story the follow up to the 1st James Bond film Dr. No. Fortunately President Kennedy did get to see an advanced screening of the finished film (shortly in the months before he was sadly assassinated) and he loved it....Also author Ian Fleming was present during much of the filming in Istanbul & in London (it is widely rumored that he might have even appeared as an extra in one of the several train sequences - which has been often debated but never has been officially confirmed by anyone). This is also one of Sean Connery's own favorite of all his Bond pictures. Also Walter Gotell, who appears as the S.P.E.C.T.R.E. commander in this film would also later appear in several of the Roger Moore James Bond pictures as General Gogol (the Russian counterpart version of M).

My favourite Bond film. OHMSS, TLD and CR follow it. Even the theme song is very of its time - the early 60s. That's what makes Bond films great - even when they're not very good, they're still a cool time capsule into what people were into at the time. Fortunately, this one is fantastic and I love the suspense of this movie and the reality of it. Movies today are going so fast there's no time for suspense. There's a real sense in this one that Bond could actually die, and the danger adds to the story.

I watched spoofs based on these early Bond films (Austin Powers, Venture Brothers, Inspector Gadget, etc.) before actually viewing them in their entirety and it amazed me just how inherently comical so many shots are in the source material. Just the part on SPECTRE Island where they casually walk past men practicing karate next to men shooting flamethrowers is the kind of visual comedy you see in films like Airplane!

Tangential comment, not about the film but triggered by the Chess match scene...
It used to be that a World Chess Championship match was held every 3 years, in this way: All the top-ranked players in the world would compete against each other in a long tournament, and then the point winner from that tournament would take on the sitting world champion.
Bobby Fischer, the super genius American player, openly stated that the Russians cheated, and that's why the championship match was always one Russian against another. In the qualifying tournament, a player got a point for a win and half a point for a draw. The Russians would deliberately play to draws against each other, until they could clearly see which one of them was accumulating the best point total against the non-Russians. From that point on, they'd all throw their games with that guy, thereby assuring that he'd be the new Challenger.
Fischer was so good that he broke thru that system, became the Challenger in 1972, and then defeated the reigning champion Boris Spassky.
In 1975 Fischer refused to defend his title unless the rules for the qualifying tournament were changed so that the Russians couldn't cheat. The chess federation stripped him of his title. But some years later, they adopted reforms similar to what he'd proposed.

This is Connery’s personal favourite of all the Bond films he made. So glad you’re watching the whole franchise. The score introduced a new secondary James Bond theme called “007” which is used primarily in action scenes and you’ll hear it crop up all the way up to Moonraker which I think was its last appearance. Although it is not used in every film like the original bond theme is. You’ll also find that all the films up to Daniel Craigs reboot are linked yet they don’t dwell on it much at all. But it was said that all the fils are the same character (with different actors) but simply set in the time it was made so Dr.No is the same 007 that’s in Octopussy (just to pick a random title) but the films look different simply cause they wish to keep Bond in the current era. My Favourite changes often but right now it’s You Only Live Twice

At 0:53 "The cold war was sort of happening in the '60s" - Wow! What an understatement! The Cold War was in full force in the '60s.
In 1960 Soviet ground defenses shot down a U2 spy-plane and detained its US pilot, Gary Powers.
The Berlin Wall was built in 1961. The Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba was launched in a failed attempt to overthrow Castro in 1961. Kennedy deployed 18,000 military advisors to South Vietnam in 1961.
The Cuban Missile Crisis happened in 1962.
In 1963, the US and USSR agreed to install a hotline to allow direct communication in the event of a nuclear crisis.
In 1964, as the result of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the U.S. became directly involved in the Vietnam War. China tested its first atomic weapon in 1964.
In 1965, a Soviet newspaper reported that the government had shipped anti-aircraft missiles to North Vietnam.
Mao Zedong and his followers initiated the Cultural Revolution in China in 1966.
In 1967, five nations signed the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) declaration in Bangkok, a commitment to co-operate in the struggle against communism.
In January, 1968, the USS Pueblo, an American naval vessel being used to gather intelligence, was boarded and seized by North Korean troops. The ship was claimed as a prize of war. Its 82 crewmen were detained, interrogated and tortured for 11 months, before being released in December, 1968. The Tet Offensive in Vietnam in 1968 suggested that a US victory there might be years away, or possibly unachievable. In 1968, Soviet and Warsaw Pact armies invaded Czechoslovakia.
In 1969, tensions between the USSR and China reached a flashpoint when Chinese troops ambushed Soviet patrols on the Ussuri River. This marked the beginning of the Sino-Soviet border war. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi seized power in Libya and forged links with the USSR in 1969. US and Soviet negotiators began talks on strategic arms limitation in November, 1969.

Would be better with a stronger keylight (red is the 'darkest colour') or a less intense backlight (a desklamp on your windowsill would be my first instinct).

Funny how you keep referring to Grant as Mr. Blonde. Now all I see is Michael Madsen (who appeared in Die Another Day) as the character Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs.

That you're not freaked out by how un PC this movie is is kinda refreshing.

The budget for this movie was 2 million USD and that's why is better than Dr. No in many respects.

I've been a Bond fan for 23 years but I've never understood the praise for this movie. I've watched it many times trying to force myself into liking it as most fans do, but its just so slow and boring.
Easily the most overrated Bond movie.

From Russia With Love was boring as hell. The novel was way, way better….especially the meeting between Tatiana and Klebb.
