My brother-in-law in Australia had a used Holden Gemini four door sedan in the 1980's. It was yellow. Not a bad little car at all with the Isuzu 1600cc four cylinder engine. It certainly had more power than the Chevette, and, of course, Holden's Radial Tuned Suspension. That was the car he owned when he married my sister in November 1984. You are right to say that this model was truly a world car.

I grew up with chevettes for me it's one of the few cars that looks equally as good in either saloon or hatchback

I used to love visiting all the car dealerships when I was a young lad living in Wimbledon. I still have all the brochures that I collected from way back then. I had a few Vauxhall Chevettes. They were great little cars. Great video that’s bringing back a lot of old memories 🚗 🚗 👍 👍

The Carlton and Royale were brand new models in Autumn 1978. This is where Vauxhall build quality starts to improve and they become a serious rival to Ford.
I had earmarked the Chevette as a potential 1st car. Wouldn't mind owning one or a Cavalier as a potential classic.

Watching certainly brought back memories, although we never had a chevette as a family car, my dad had a few vivas in his time, 1 of which was a 1965 Ha BKL835C 1057cc deluxe model which was pretty much the same colour as the unusual green Chevette that you pointed out...... The other more fondly remembered viva was an HC 1256 deluxe 1974 UOY718M, which we had around 1982 ish which my older brother passed his test in....... after a bit of persuading my dad and quite a few trips to the breakers yards completely transformed the interior to the Vauxhall Magnum spec including the 7 dial instrument panel out of a scrapped 1300 GLS, plus an aftermarket Abbey auto centre console it really made the interior stand out.......... Bring on the vivas........... Slight change of subject......... Here's a little challenge for you (you're probably gonna laugh at this😅😅😅) If and when you're able to do it..... I'd love to see you review the FSO range of cars as I had a 1979 FSO Polonez CMY826T as a 19 year old in 1989 😅😅😅 despite the jokes about the Eastern block cars it was surprisingly quite a good if you turned a blind eye to the agricultural technology of it and you needed to have arms like popeye to steer it at parking speeds.......... Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to more of the great service you're providing

Interesting video which brought back some memories for me. In 1976 I bought a Vauxhall Chevette L hatch in Champagne Starfire a lovely pale gold colour. It was very economical and reliable and handled very well. But it had a very fierce clutch. My second one was a Chevette GLS hatch in white with those sporty looking rostyle looking wheels complete with shiny wheel embellishers. The front and rear bumpers had under riders. The seats were upholstered in a light blue velour trim. Both great little cars. The only thing was the 1256cc engines were quite sluggish but great on fuel consumption. Easy cars to service though. I really loved them. Far more reliable than my old Corsa B and Corsa C.

I had a Y reg estate. It was an ex RAF staff car. Loved it. Didn't love the rust however.

I thought the Chevette replaced the Viva, amazing to think they were running two cars in the same segment at the same time.

My dad had the Chevette estate, very practical, quite roomy, and a fairly decent load carrier with the rear seats folded flat.

Had a 1983 Chevrolet Chevette, basic transportation. Sluggish, but it kept going on. Five door hatchback. Automatic.

My first car in the early 1980s was a Chevette GL 3dr hatch in royal red (burgundy) with red interior. 1977 R plate. It didn’t have the Rostyle sports wheels but chrome hub caps and full trim rings so that maybe the varied style the brochure referred to as early ones I think had these and later ones those in the brochure. It was a good car, rear drive, handled and drove well and 3dr hatch was more sporty looking ( like 2300 HS/HSR)

You're quite right about the Isuzu 1600 in Gemini...lovely brisk engine, particularly with a manual transmission - selling the Cavalier would most certainly have been the reason for these low spec Chevettes. At least the Vauxhalls weren't saddled with mandatory automatics, 5 mph bumpers, truck type A/C units and nutty smog equipment like the Chevrolets were!
Gemini, like the HB (Viva) Torana also had modified suspension as Euro spec cars could not handle Australian conditions.
In Aussie, the Cavalier came in 1981 as the FWD Camira J Car...it immediately fell to bits and had to be recalled!

No doubt Aussie conditions tested many a vehicle.

I owned several ageing chevettes in all forms, in late 80's to mid 90's they were all reliable. E stood for economy) it was a basic entry level model. I also owened several viva's hc and 1 of them was a E . It was in yellow. My favourite Chevette was a brown GL auto with overriders and spot lights and vauxhall mud flaps. It been owned by a old man who looked after it and garage kept it. I only had it 2 days as it was stolen xmas eve 1990. I always wondered what happened to it, as it was never found .i was gutted

I had a Chevette back in 1989, it was a 1978 model L but it had the sports wheels fitted. It had been parked up for about 2 years before i got it so had to get it MOT'd and spent a while fixing it up but it was a nice car, i remember it was a nice drive. Mine was a saloon but my friend had the hatchback which always seemed like it had more space in the rear seats. The rear doors were quite small which made it a little harder to get in and out of than the hatchback even if you had to get out through the front doors in the hatch as they were larger than the 4 door saloon so easier access. I think the lights were recessed because the Opel version, the Kadette had a flat front, i think the lights are just the lights from the Kadette but in this front pod which made the "droop snoot" front, then when the update came the lights were then vauxhall versions which then could be flush, but i maybe wrong. Nice pick of this vauxhall brochure and nice commentary too.

Seeing the option of a radial tyre over the standard crossply reminded me there used to be a PSA about mixing those tyre types and how dangerous it was.

My Mum owned a 1979 Chevette E saloon (white, with a red interior). Nice looking car, but it was so basic, cramped interior and - oh my God - the rust!!

Me Mum had the Opel Kadett P reg. Horrible lime green. Preferred that front end treatment to the Chevette. The pre facelift Chevette headlamp housing was perfect for collecting snow

Why is the Chevette not as popular as the Ford Escort? It's a very handsome little car!

And the Viva , being the only real Vauxhall . Chevette, being a Kadett c , Cavalier, being an Ascona , and the Carlton , being a Record e.But Vauxhall made a Chevette HLS, which Opel never did .

My first car in 1985 was a 2 door in white with a brown stripe. On day two it caught fire when fuel leaked on to the manifold. Closed the A3 in Hampshire as it melted. reg UGH10W

"What can we do with all these old Viva parts". said Vauxhall. " I know, let's bring out a "new " thrown together stopgap hatchback" said the bean counters. Father replaced his 1965 VX4/90 with a used hatch Chevette. Cramped , bumpy ride ,huge transmission tunnel..Quite like the styling, but not a great package.

I'm wondering how much british engineering was in those Vauxhall models. The Carlton on the front page of the catalogue was sold as Opel Rekord E in the rest of Europe and the Chevette was known as the Opel Kadett C.
Fords were engineered all over Europe in the 70s and 80s. There were some synergy effects at Ford as well, yes. I guess most of the Vauxhalls of that era had already been rebadged Opels with a different snout here and there though.

Viva would have been the most Vauxhall of these models but was a very aging design that was ready to be axed by this time

Interestingly, my 1977 Chevette L saloon had a plastic bodied door mirror, rather than a chrome plated metal one. I assumed that it was a factory item.
