This is exactly why I have an HP Proliant server running unRAID with over 56TB of storage. I noticed this coming and I'm quite a data hoarder so I built this out and have been backing up everything I can. All my movies, music, entire backups of my entire Google presence, Facebook presence, even all my Audible books. Currently working on getting all my Kindle books...it's proving to be tricky but I refuse to accept "you will own nothing and you will be happy". Flat-out refuse. If anyone would like more info on doing the same, I'm happy to help! 👍

youtube-dlp, it's a very easy to use program to grab youtube videos, or videos that aren't easily downloadable on a lot of sites (instagram, facebook, twitter, twitch, etc). I use this to grab tutorials myself.

For everyone wondering why the movie titles don't match the clips: a large portion of the video is dedicated to explaining that you can't trust information that other people have control of, and that you need to verify the information you're given because it could be wrong.

as an Iranian, I grew up learning that you can not take a lot of things as granted, I'm working my way out of the cloud (someone else's computer), its much more common to us to loose internet access (thanks to the tyrannical government) and this video gave me a really usefool ideas to what to do for when such thing happens.

Soldier of Fortune is a very apt example of being able to debunk modern lies with old truth. These days, if you say that the Glock 17 is so-named because of it's 17-round capacity, people will tell you that "ackshully, it's because it was Gaston Glock's 17th patent." However, if you look on the Austria patent's office website, you'll find that there's multiple Glock patents, all of which predate his 17th patent, which only occurred years after the first gen Glock 17 was released. But if you were to look on page 39 in the October 1984 issue of Soldier of Fortune, you will find some of the earliest press coverage of the pistol, which recounts Peter Kokalis's experience with it at Glock's headquarters in Austria, where he writes:
"At 21.175 oz., empty, the Glock 17 (referring to its magazine capacity) compares favorably to the competition."
I been using the same hard drive for 20 years to watch my movies and store my books. I was today years old when I found out that it wont last. Thank you for teaching me something.
Lucky you. I've had many hard drives fail over the last 20yrs. All my kids' pictures and videos are on those drives. It happens.
@@jonathonmcmillan9410 So I treat my hard drive much like I treat my physical books. Kept in a water proof container. But can the files on the hard drive become compromised over time? Please forgive my ignorance as the most modern technology I trust is a LS3 engine.
5 years, sitting or in use, is the cutoff. Newer ones have a data transfer limit, but I'm mechanically inclined to understand materials degrade over time, so 5 years max for any medium, then I replace them all new. It's cheap compared to data that you can't find anymore. I tried the "it's always available".... No it's not 🤦

Just a heads-up, MicroSD cards have insanely high failure rates. You should think of them as disposable storage. The most economical mass storage for unchanging data is to write to spinning HDD's (2 or more drives with the same data is even better), unplug them and store in cool, dry (separate) places far from magnets. Nothing is fool-proof, but if you're on a super tight budget and can't afford redundant storage arrays, magnetic drives in cold storage that you boot up as needed or every 3-5 years and make new copies are the way to go.

When it comes to really long term storage, electronic 1s and 0s don't stand a chance. If history has shown us anything, it's that you want to carve the record in stone if you want something to last the true test of time.
I've collected hundreds of .pdf books and manuals, from a source years ago, that had to do with survival, preparedness, and the like. I just keep it on a few different hard drives, but I need to revisit that and get that more in order and add to it.

It's not something we can do alone, it may seem easy, as i used to think 10 years ago when i started a library using hard drives, thinking i would have time to transfer it to other types of media, i was wrong, i failed, i lost everything.
Life happens, it gets in the way.
You will probably fail also if you are doing it alone, unless this is the most important project of your life and you care about nothing else.

Computers* the cloud itself is often decentralized and is more resilient because of that. It's typically the connection to those servers that fail, not the storage itself.
This reminds me of a class I took two semesters ago on Digital History. He is absolutely right on everything he is saying.
I grew up watching Sean Kennedy of RantMedia and because of him I became a data hoarder. I've filled multiple hard drives, CDs, Printouts, ect of stuff. I even make backups of internet bookmarks which has been really useful.
I see we are slowly heading towards setting up NAS's (network attached storage) (make sure you connect them to a UPS / uninterrupted power supply).
Aside from the usual business / enterprise use cases, they can be your own personal cloud and streaming service. You can easily rip movie files from DVDs and blurays that you own, and place them on a NAS instead of having to rely on netflix, amazon prime, disney plus, ect. It will also protect media from going down the "memory hole", I believe it was WB a couple years ago that was deleting all sorts of old media in order to write it off.
As for backing up data, follow the 3-2-1 principle, 3 copies of your data, on two different types of storage media, with one copy being offsite.
Blu-ray are a decent pick for more long term back ups. Blu-ray disks can easily hold 15-50gb depending on manufacturer, and can be data safe for anywhere from 15 to 100 years (allegedly), depending on manufacturer.
If you're doing serious data hoarding you should look into magnetic tape backup. It's the most data dense and long living data storage medium.
I have never trusted the cloud (period). I love movies, TV series , music, video games, etc. I have a 50TB media server with almost 7,000 movies, almost 1,700 TV series, countless music, MAME/console emulator ROMS and PC games. As far as games go, if I can't install and play without the Internet, I just don't get into or hooked on them. My entire media library is backed up twice onto both 2.5" portable drives and NVME drives. I can literally hold my entire collection in the palm of my hands and access from my cell phone, tablet or PC. Obviously we can't store everything. I think each of us should archive what we care about to ensure it survives.

as a software engineer with a degree in mechanical engineering, I trust the cloud lol. The cloud systems have their own backups (multiple) and full time staff on call to maintain it 24/7. If you run your own server you have to deal with your own vulnerabilities which are inevitable as well and not really worth the headache or time needed to invest into it
@@user-sp9ue1ws7c yes it is work to maintain, but necessary when storms knock out service, or censorship removes them, or removes ads. Should still backup to cloud as an extra insurance to your own server crashing. Two is one, one is none.
@@user-sp9ue1ws7c That definitely depends on the retention purpose and timescale you're aiming for. For everyday tasks where it's not the end of the world if access is temporarily lost, sure, trust the cloud. If something is vital to never, ever lose (or you're aiming to help preserve data through the collapse of society), don't keep your only copy in the cloud. Also, not calling out OP here, but media collections like that are usually pirated, which is smart to keep contained only on hardware you own.
There is a project called protomaps. The project provides the entire current (weekly updates) OpenStreetMap of Earth in a single 120Gb file, and a map tile server. So should be able to run a map tile server locally and add it as a custom map source to ATAK EUDs. Haven't gotten around to trying it but should work if ATAK supports Mapbox Vector Tiles (MVT) directly.

The military has a database called Odin. It doesn't have everything but it lists many of the worlds weapon systems, who uses them, their defense and offense capabilities, and much more. They even have real war games both for bluefor and opfor sides. Great tools. Ive backed that up with kiwix.

I will say though, I do enjoy the clips being accurately labeled - there has been a few movies I've watched because of this channel. DIY Network Attached Storage for the win. You can store everything (you still need a separate backup!), and run many MANY useful services. You can have your own cloud storage, your own media server, your own library, your own [insert name of almost anything here!]. even your own AI...
LTT has put out a ton of content over the years on building and setting up your own NAS. Any old or extra PC can be converted to your own local server accessible to all devices on your LAN. Make it a Plex media server while you’re at it and cut your dependence on streaming services.
That’s what I did. Currently over 250 Blu-ray movie titles so far!
Good rule of thumb for backups that has stood the test of time: 3 copies, 2 formats (storage mediums), 1 of them offline

But all attempts to centralize and standartize will lead more or less to attempts to seize control

I'm a bit of a data hoarder. This is why I have gotten into building my own home servers. I plan on vastly expanding my home hosting and archiving ability this year, great timing on this video. Gives me ideas on how to archive things like Wikipedia.

Also a good repository of information for a project like this is the Survivor Library. You can buy a copy, download the files individually for free, or you can write a script to download them for you. I’m not sure how this differs from Project Gutenberg, but either way, it’s another resource worth being aware of.

Ive had this in mind for a long time; preserving certain information to protect it from a dark age. It's a noble and honorable thing to do. Thats why The Brotherhood of Steel does it. Who knows. Mayne we will have an equivalent to them in the coming future. I think we already know who's gonna become the Enclave. Seems we already have the Enclave actually.

I have been doing this the 80's, of course this was necessary before the internet and cloud as we know it. I have everything on a few terabyte drives. I do not trust cloud backup. They can look at anything they want and deny access anytime.
I could see saving any kind of medical journals as a good idea. Anything explaining what antibiotics to use for a specific illness, how to diagnose illnesses, how to suture, etc.
The great thing with modern tech is how much more reliable drives are and how small text files are capacity wise.
I highly recommend everyone who cares about their data who has even just a little experience with computers to have a NAS. I recommend models from WD or Synology. Keep a mirrored storage medium with backups of your documents you can pack into a backpack on a moments notice. Synology NAS drives also encrypt all of the data on the drives (if desired) and only YOU are able to decrypt it. Data security is incredibly important.

I'm very glad you mentioned that the cloud is just someone else's computer. I only wish you hadn't waited until the very end as some my have tuned out by then. Too many people look at the "cloud" as some magical place where data, including theirs, lives. It is not. It is just someone else's computer.

Setting up your own firewall, storage, and setup pi hole, the sky is the limit once you setup a home lab.
I also believe switching to Linux is a must for any serious open source advocate. Start with Linux mint and go from there, windows is not your friend.

I've also owned a Linux machine that doesn't play well with the Internet so the only way I get data on to it is via sneaker net. It's getting old and I really should back it up before the 1993 hard drive decides to give up on me. wait a second, I'd like to see that documentary on the NZ film industry. My family was heavily involved in the old South African film industry, I still remember cataloging all the old film reels that were later digitized and subsequently sold off or destroyed. Old documentary's, film from different era's dating back to when film was first made here in Africa.. many of the old timers who had immigrated in the 90's would of gone to NZ and Australia, perhaps influencing their film or pulling out of the industry entirely.. as socialism(communism) took over the colonies. Who could doubt that it does not have a foothold today, more like a stronghold.

I've taken this a step further and built completely local versions of Chat GPT (Llama 3) that can live in a Farday bag. Granted you'll need a power source to use it for longer than a laptop charge. I see this as the future of privacy, oddly enough.

As the data gets more, and more centralized by a few it becomes easier to manipulate available information from the past in an effort to manipulate the current or the future.
I recommend saving your information and data to at least three different platforms. You can use hard drives, a cloud storage solution, and something like dvds or archives grade flash drives. I would also suggest having multiples of each of those for extremely important files. Storage is relatively cheap these days across many different formats. Saving your files in an EMP proof container is also very easy and cheap. And don’t keep all of your backup storage in one location such as your home or office. What if there’s a fire or tornado or some other natural disaster or theft. So at least three different types of storage and multiples of them and at least two different physical locations is the best.
If you are a technically competent computer user, there are cheap server hdds on TH-cam for mass storage. Most have plenty of life in them, and 10 to 20 tbs is ALOT of data when you can get that at 15 to 30 bucks. I personally have at home a petabox I self built which has an insane amount of saved videos from youtube on repair,tactics etc. Never needed cloud again and very soon I suspect every person will have to have an offline server (from the internet, not your network) to preserve certain information...Very cool video.

I remember a few times iTunes would delete all my music files. It was a big pain in the ass but I had most of it backed up on a separate drive. When it happened again I realized it would be better to back up everything. There's really no such thing as "a cloud" , it's all someone else's computer (I guess Hillary Clinton and Anthony wiener didn't realize this, lol.)
I remember reading solder of fortune magazine as a kid, one issues I still have was on spetznaz operator in Afghanistan and WHO was training the Afghan groups, it was VERY eye opening in light of what has happened in the decades since the Russians left Afghanistan it all checked out. Our worst enemy has always been our own government.
Remember -- if you save a backup of Wikipedia, you also save a backup of all the changes that have ever been made to it -- as well as all the Talk pages discussing those changes.

I loved the original idea of Google books.
They were trying to make Babylon's library, digitalizing every piece of printed media, in every language, and make it available for everyone.
But sadly, greedy publishers made sure it wouldn't happen.
