  • See a few of the plants that only grow on the 450 million year old calcium carbonate (limestone) rocks in the mountains of Death Valley, California. Learn just what the hell a "Chasmophyte" is (most Chasmophytes are endemic to such a habitat).
In this episode, we feature :
    #Euphorbia schizoloba
    #Penstemon calcareus
    #Diplacus rupicola
    #Tetracoccus ilicifolius
    #Astragalus panamintensis
Does Janet still got it? Is it easy to sneak into one of her concerts?

If anyone is wondering why the environment in the footage appears to be strangely pulsating, it's a byproduct of automated video footage stabilisation. The stabilisation reduces the shakiness of handheld footage by cropping in slightly and repositioning the field of view to counteract the shake, and it also will dynamically stretch some parts of the image. As a result you sometimes get weird visual artifacts where parts of the video seem to be bulging or contracting in size. It looks a little trippy but it's better than the camera shaking all over the place (which is inevitable with footage shot on a phone camera or DSLR).

If you actually do read comments, I hope you read this one. I don't much care how many followers you have but I do find your videos very educational and useful, as well as entertaining. I sometimes share them with my 76 year old dad because, like me, he's very curious about botany and geology and whatnot. He studied philosophy and became a schoolteacher and I studied mathematics, so we're both a bit on the abstract side of thinking and I, for one, find someone who speaks coherently about science to be very refreshing. I'm not a child nor am I uneducated, but I don't know crap about botany and I really like the way you describe your surroundings, it's very similar to how my father and me always chat when we go hiking and whatnot. I live in teh SOuthwest, I've been to South America (including the tacama which you covered recently) and I enjoy learning new things about places, so please keep it up regardless of followers or asshole comments.

You mentioned recently how you're not too into insects anymore. I was scavenging from a pile of wood on some private property yesterday and found a beautiful Maevia inclemens, a jumping spider, which hung out with me for a few minutes. There were multiple types of wood in this pile too and I couldn't help but wonder what species of trees someone had chopped down and dumped in a pile to rot. Some of it was pretty fresh stuff. Some real woody vine type plant as well, gunna make for some good firewood that I didn't have to buy at a grocery store or Home Depot.
