"Deny Yourself" | 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Fr. Mike's Homily)

  • "No" paves the way for "yes".
Jesus gives us the conditions for discipleship. We must deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him. But what does it really mean to deny ourself? And how can this giant "no" pave the way for an even greater "yes"?

This is the first time I have been to a Sunday mass. I've been to one baptism, one funeral, and one midnight mass over the years. It is so beautiful and I felt so good when I left. I don't know if the Catholic Church is where I need to be, but I'm grateful for the opportunity to pray with you all today.
I always love Father Mike's homily.

God I know no matter our struggle, we can turn to you. God please continue to give me strength to overcome my fears. I want to give up and quit. But I keep faith even as I constantly struggle to take care of my children. My husband died years ago. At times I feel so alone. I’m a single mom. I suffered an heart attack and I’m battling lupus. I’m overwhelmed. Both of my sons are autistic. I’m constantly struggling to buy groceries. Struggling to pay rent. Struggling to buy my children’s school supplies. I don’t know how I’m going to get through it but thankfully I have you Lord! I know you will provide. Faith over fear!

Thank you father mike, this is always an ongoing issue for everyone really. I view this as an ongoing challenge, to be "less" of me and more of the Lord, or giving Him space to transform me. I often think of this in terms of my ego. Assessing emotions and fears that hurt me becomes, is this coming from my ego? Because "I am a hard working person, or a successful person" or what have you, when I'm hurt or injured by others, or feel things are beneath me, it is my ego talking. Defending your ego against God's will doesn't bring you closer to Him. But this a daily challenge for us, and I always try to ask myself, "is this just your ego talking?"

I appreciate the opportunity to listen to these Sunday homilies. I'd like to suggest, though, that these videos begin with reading of the gospel.
I realize that not all homilies relate to the gospel, but many - like this one - do. So listening to the gospel first gives us some perspective for the homily. (I suppose I could watch the entire UMD mass - but already attended mass today, in my home parish!)

I am actually still confused about the 'deny' part. Perhaps because English is not my first language. According to my understanding, it means all that we do, and all that we have is not ours, right? So we have to offer it to God; Our struggle, our misery, our happiness, our worry, etc.
But there was a good Christian country singer. He worshiped God through music since he liked music so much. But then he tried to implement the 'deny' part by stopping making music and becoming a missionary.
So my question is: does denying equal to saying no to what we love?
Father Mike said at the beginning of the video that it is not like that. But in the end, it still seems a bit blurry for me.
I hope somebody can enlighten me..❤

  • @ameliaolson7580
    @ameliaolson7580 ปีที่แล้ว

Offering God your breath, your thought, your memory is still putting yourself before God. This is because your ego is saying, "This moment/thing is MINE so here have it".
To correct this you have to approach the offering from an egoless position.
So, in example, if you gave me your memory of an event, what the heck would I do with that as a deity? I already know your skewed perceptions and misinterpretions of that benign life occurance. So, what am I supposed to do with it, hang it on my cloud wall as a decorative poster? Humans share memories with each other in order to understand the other's perceptions and place in the world, for sympathetic empathy, for feeling understood, for intimacy, etc.
So, giving a sigh or a thought to God is moot. It should be a request for forgiveness in most cases or, at best, a moment of grateful praise. But, it's certainly not living as a sacrifice. So, then, what is?
Well, it's putting down our massive egos and knowing God knows us. It's knowing that if you can be on the same wave length as your best friend and knowing that you have the ability to know each others thoughts, well, then how much more and more clearly can God do that?
So, in short, it's gently setting down your ego and skepticism, acknowledging that He is more capable then your best friend at communicating vibes with you, learning to hear Him, and then listening to what He tells you in order to be guided by Him in everything you say, do, think, and desire.
You know that song, "I will follow him, follow him wherever he may goooo...", well, that's being a living sacrifice. It's listening and obeying Him, not listening to the Ego, not the random thoughts, not the suppressed memories, not the unconscious mind.
You have to align with the vibe God is on. The soul is like a radio frequency, the body is like a radio. You have to tune in and reduce the scattered signals making white noise.
Being a living sacrifice is living in love and understanding that God does not share it with just anyone (even though everyone is welcome to ask and find).

Sooooo, I’m with you as a consecrated... offer my body: check got it, my spirit, my graces, my love, check , check check. Don’t have favorites, check.... well sort of, check. But submission to the other in the church authority makes women whores, objectified, trafficked, and ripped to shreds internally, often leading to PIDs which most victims don’t realize they have.I realize it’s not just women consecrated used as sexual stress relief but also meth opiates and alcohol. The answer is the truth. I can forgive my brothers for drugging and raping once but after that you opt for heartless drug pushing pimps who hate life and God too. Not all but,...most. The solution as the Lord rightly suggested is, stop the abuse of The blemished Lamb or stop the abuse of His lambs. I don’t own my body but it is the temple of the Holy Spirit and I can’t continue to allow the priesthood to desecrate it either. Be men, love and sacrifice, get consent and do not possess another, unless you’re opting out of consecrated life.

My niece feels the same way, and it breaks my heart. For even though I know how difficult her life is, it is still better than Job's.
God gives us as much as we need to serve Him. Because trials and tribulations He allows to happen to us are only to test and purify our hearts.
If you're living a life of never-ending struggle, it's because the devil knows how much God loves you, and Satan wants to trick you into rejecting God. If you persevere, God will reward you just as He rewarded Job. Don't give up before the miracle happens.
