GLY PWR= Galley Power I flew MD-11 for World and Airbus for AAL. This was an incredibly difficult aircraft to learn. Training was done at McDonald Douglas in LGB. 16+ hours of study every day. 4+ hour oral and a 3 hour Type ride. The Airbus was like a vacation compared to this thing. Very complex systems but extremely fun to fly and very easy to land. Thx for using World.
That's what he said... The pre-flight sequence in FS2Crew for this thing is 45 minutes, compared to 25 minutes for the 737NG for the PMDG models of each. Since they're based on real-world procedures, I can't imagine reality would be much different.

@@CaptainMac Oh ye! The new tutorial was amazing!! Especially the FMC custom waypoint part. And after reading some FCOM I think you should do another tutorial specific on autopilot (including different FMA modes) for MD-11. Some autopilot logic behind the MD-11 was really interesting, for example, rotating the speed knob to pre-select a speed and pulling the knob to confirm the new speed, which is quite useful when you want to use level change to climb at for example 280kts/.76M, just pull the speed knob for 280kts and switch the speed window to mach, and then pre-select the speed knob to .76M. The aircraft would automatically capture the .76M when reaching it. I've never seen a similar feature in any aircraft beside MD-11. I think a video that focuses on autopilot would help a lot simmers to fly the MD-11 on Vatsim much more comfortably. ADG: Air Driven Generator. Its a propeller driven generator to give you either hydraulic or electrical power if needed. it will extend below the 1R door. Nice tutorial, great work!
the answer to the question at 38:08 is because the md 11 has small horizontal stabilizers so it needs high/ fast airflow over them in order to have elevator authority and if flown at a slow speed it would stall
This by far is the best tutorial I have seen to date. I’m also a huge MD11 fan as I’ve flown on many MD11 flights to include over a dozen on World Airways through my years assigned to AMC. I want to get into flight simming again and hope that I can find MD11 software/downloads. I wish that more folks would fly this great aircraft on TH-cam. Thank you Capt Mac and please give me some computer build specs to be able to support these kinds of sims.

STIUPTONOGOOD you are correct! They made the vertical stabilizer smaller in an attempt to reduce drag, but in the process reduced, of all things, stability. As a result, an approach speed of 20 to 30 knots higher is required. Thanks for the answer...I agree...it will be a very sad day when they are gone.
The flight control check display is the config button on the little panel just under the fuel switches on the centre console, just behind the series of little white knob things.
when you export you're flight plan from pfpx there is a number at the end of the flight plan you need to input that number in the fmc for the flight plan to show up.

MAN stands for Manifold Drain this swithc has no effect on Auto mode ,it has a momentary control on both fuel main tanks 1&3 manifold drain/ outboard fill valves.

It's a shame PMDG won't update this plane. It's one of my favorites and I have countless hours in it - mainly in FS9. I found the FSX version, compared to the NGX and other newer aircraft, to be a little long in the tooth. They spent so long on it and the ground work is already there, but they claim the sales were too low. I wonder why they think the B747 or that DC-6 would sell well? The B744 has already been developed, so I expect lower sales than their previous version, and lord knows the JetStream they produced wasn't popular. I don't understand why they won't develop more popular short haul birds (e.g., CRJ, ERJ).

Here's my theory on the high landing speed, A lower landing speed will require a higher angle of attack. with the high AOA and slow speed, Engine no 2 can be starved of decent airflow. due to it have to move around the fuselage first The higher speed allows for a shallower AOA which allows better airflow into No 2 intake duct.
15,000 lbs of taxi fuel? I think you meant 1,500 lbs and that is just a default value. You can manually input another fuel value. If anyone uses Sim Brief to generate a release and say for example you choose 10 mins of taxi out fuel you will notice that you get 1,000 lbs planned.

They reduced the size to reduce drag, but the overall length and size of the MD 11 is greater than the DC 10...the smaller stabilizer created an instability in the aircraft...landing speeds are 20 to 30 knots higher and there is a porpoise effect that requires computers to control. I'm going to take a wild stab at it, and guess that the reason of the high landing speed, is due to the engine at the back causing the nose to pitch up at lower speeds, so the speed is increased to keep the nose at a reasonable angle. If that isn't it, I also guess it's to keep air running INTO that tail engine. Again, not an MD-11 pilot, just taking a guess :)
Hey Captain Mac, I have had the MD-11 for quite a while but only recently started playing around with it. Watching your video I realised that your MD-11 handles quite differently to mine. My MD-11 zigzags around the flightpath at cruise and does these weird s-turns; it can basically never maintain level and stable flight. I initially thought this was because of AS16 and its advanced wind mechanics that, being an old product, it couldn't deal with. But I saw that you too, run AS16 but your MD-11 seems to be perfectly stable during cruise. I've been messing around with FSUIPC and AS16 wind settings for a while, but to no avail. Is it possible for you to post your FSUIPC.ini, FSX.cfg and AS16 wind/turbulence settings anywhere so I can match my settings with yours? Also, do you run FSX SP1+2 or Acceleration? Thank you!
Wish we had a pmdg md11 in msfs 2020. Waiting on tfdi has been slow going. They made their pre-purchase release, but didnt hit their 60 day following release. Progress on their progress page has been almost non-existent the past 6 weeks or so.
I was using a TQ6 when this video was made. You set up the controls the same as any others; just go to settings/controls/ and select the controller you are setting up.

You can use SimBrief flight planning for this aircraft. Now, I haven't used FSX in a while, but I believe you will find a folder for PMDG, in there an MD-11 folder, and in that folder a flight plans folder. OR...you will find PMDG/FLIGHTPLANS folder and you can put it in there. If you can't get it sorted, let me know and I'll track down a definitive answer for you.
i bought the skysims one cause apparently they stopped selling this one? any one know if i can watch this video and apply the procedures learned to the skysims version? besides the FMC which ive heard is different on the skysims md11
That is absolutely correct. The design is nearly identical to the MD-10 except the aircraft is bigger, but they didnt change the tail plane. This is also a cause for higher landing speeds.
Hey Mac, If you want to upgrade your sim and like the MD-11, go for X-Plane 11. Rotate, known from their solid, almost study level, MD-88 is making a complete study level MD-11 and it looks amazing! Just take a look at rotatesim.com, they have amazing screenshots :D

That's a great guess, but is not the case here. The extra landing speed has to do with the design of the aircraft. The MD-11 was the successor to the DC-10. Interestingly, though they are the same in many ways (very different in many more) the MD-11 has a smaller horizontal stabilizer than the DC-10. Because of this, the aircraft requires a higher approach and landing speed to maintain enough lift. Thanks for your response.

+Alexandru G. Good question. I have been trying to figure that out for a while. I really dislike how so many large aircraft look so close to the ground from the flight deck. The 747 drives me nuts. It's like 42 feet from the flight deck to the ground in the real world, but in FSX and P3D it looks like it's about 10 feet
Andreas Olsen sounds like a registration issue. Try restarting your flight sim...of that doesn't work, restart your pc...if that doesn't work, Uninstall and reinstall the aircraft. If you still have the issue you will need to contact PMDG support.

This is also the place to observe your secondary gear indications when you do the gear lights test.
1:19:30 you messed up the FMC because the STAR shall be entered from the last waypoint (SAYGE), not from the arrival airport (KDEN)! Heheh...

I know this was a while ago, but I can say that the TFDi Design MD-11 is much better than the PMDG version of old.
you mentioned moving three throttles is strange...do you have physical, real-life, tri-engine throttle controls?? If so, how'd you set'em up??

Are there any virtual charter companies? I'm currently a new member of the virtual blue angels and on the offseason I'd love to fly around the hawker 850xp doing hops..

Pretty sure I downloaded this one somewhere online. Go here fsbrasil.wordpress.com/2009/01/09/checklists/ and scroll Down til you find the PMDG MD-11...use the one that has "(Carst)"
My guess is that the landing speed is due to the extra weight on the back from the third engine.
That's a great guess, but is not the case here. The extra landing speed has to do with the design of the aircraft. The MD-11 was the successor to the DC-10. Interestingly, though they are the same in many ways (very different in many more) the MD-11 has a smaller horizontal stabilizer than the DC-10. Because of this, the aircraft requires a higher approach and landing speed to maintain enough lift. Thanks for your response.

@@MrAflac9916 TFDi is currently making a new MD11 for P3D v4 and v5...I imagine, and hope, they will make the necessary changes for MSFS2020 Compatibility as well.

How can you change the height of the cabin?
+Alexandru G. Good question. I have been trying to figure that out for a while. I really dislike how so many large aircraft look so close to the ground from the flight deck. The 747 drives me nuts. It's like 42 feet from the flight deck to the ground in the real world, but in FSX and P3D it looks like it's about 10 feet

Andreas Olsen sounds like a registration issue. Try restarting your flight sim...of that doesn't work, restart your pc...if that doesn't work, Uninstall and reinstall the aircraft. If you still have the issue you will need to contact PMDG support.
I got it working the problem is that i have Windows 10 so i went into properties and changed the program from win 10 to 7 and now it works
the only problem is that i dont have any "send to FSX" button :(

yeah I know they're redoing the 747, maybe the MD11 will get the same treatment in the future.
