      I was born in 1975, and heard this song in the early 1980s! For me, this song is always going to sound like the cutting edge of a clean, desirable, and impeccable future world that is far removed and devoid of the crude and far-from-desirable world of the present!

      Interestingly (I was 10 at the time of release), it may have been released in August '79, but it was very much a "winter" 80 song (big Dec-Feb '80) as I remember experiencing it--just hearing it brings back memories of hearing it on my older sister's radio. For many of us, this was the beginning, part of the wave in the US (from the UK, again...LOL), leading us into the MTV era. Obviously, new wave had been around a while, but it was not that mainstream. Blondie was still kinda "poppy". But this, and DEVO, and then by '82, full on "new wave' pop-punk, etc.

      @Rationalific 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes. This and "Video Killed the Radio Star" (th-cam.com/video/Iwuy4hHO3YQ/w-d-xo.html) really heralded the start of 1980s music and style. That includes the electronic/synth sounds (in the particularly 80s style) along with a "nerd" or "geek" or "pale, skinny, and socially awkward but awesome" guy doing weird but cool stuff. (I also agree with Iohphat above about the song "Pop Music" from 1979 as well. It is totally strange how some things start so suddenly, and from multiple groups.)

But I always said if a new group emerged with a old style, they would be super successful. Like imagined if this group came out today with these sounds in the mist of the songs being put out today. Would be huge, and mega successful because everyone would listen to them. Music for all ages and generations

      @@thewomble1509You would be wrong, Lorna Wing's work started in 1981 and she was the one who named it Asperger's. Hans Asperger's work, being work done in Nazi Austria, was not know by the public and wasn't translated until this time. Autism, whilst known about, was not yet properly defined and not in the public consciousness. The first time most people had ever heard of it was Rain Man. This is why the whole MMR vaccine myth came about, because people were able to have their kids diagnosed.

    i realized something about this song and how different it sounded, it wasnt long before i knew that this song was a footprint of what was to become a whole new sound of the next decade, the 80's.
    only a year or 2 earlier i heard the song "pop music" and could hear the sound going in to a new direction but this song was like the introduction.

      Yes. Look at how the scene evokes cell-tower 5G imagery decades before. The power of the pyramid and capstone seem to fuel the new mode of communication. It’s a FreeMasonic world, we’re just living in it.

    It's 1980 on a Wednesday night, my Papa is driving us home in our VW Brasilia after playing a few games of duckpin bowling. Yes, the kind where there was no machine for resetting the pins for each frame, it was done by children or small men paid to do the job. This song came up on enough occasions on the radio after 11pm while we were still on the highway and it felt like our theme for driving home.

    Around this time[1980], Numan also developed his style. According to Numan, this was an unintentional result of acne; before an appearance on Top of the Pops, he had "spots everywhere, so they slapped about half an inch of white makeup on me before I'd even walked in the door. And my eyes were like pissholes in the snow, so they put black on there. My so-called image fell into place an hour before going on the show". His "wooden" stage presence was, in his words, a result of extreme self-consciousness and lack of "showmanship". During this period, Numan generated an army of fans calling themselves "Numanoids", providing him with a fanbase which maintained their support through the latter half of the 1980s, when his fortunes began to fall precipitously.He later said that he, "Got really hung up with this whole thing of not feeling, being cold about everything, not letting emotions get to you, or presenting a front of not feeling".
