    I'm currently working to replace the older design blowout prevention system in which uses an annular valve at the top of the assembly of blind shear rams at the bottom. It's been 9 years since the deep water horizons incident of which the defects of this design were highlighted in the failure of this design which lead to the inability to stop the well blowout.
    This design failed at the annular valve due to the rubber doughnut seal being damaged and failing to stop the flow. Lower on the blowout prevention assembly are the blind shear rams which are hydraulic and designed to crush/cut the wellhead pipe and seal closed. The wellhead pipe was bent from a massive "kick" or Pressure spike and was out of alignment with the blind shear rams and when activated didn't quite completely crush/cut all of the wellhead pipe causing pressure and flow of gases and crude to pass through the failed blowout prevented and up through the riser and onto the drop horizon's platform where escaped gases found a heat source. Boom.
    This type of blowout prevention system cannot be periodically tested to verify proper operation, no one knows if it will work until needed. It is incapable of isolating pressure and control valves are not repairable.
    Even if this type of blowout prevention system did work as designed still Leaves the well sitting at the bottom of the seafloor sealed by only a crushed/cut wellhead pipe. It has now become basically a time bomb that cannot be repaired or abandoned without causing a spill.
    I'm a mechanic employed in Alaska's oilfields in Prudhoe Bay north slope area at the Kuparuk river unit working for a company subcontracted to conoco Phillips. Current 2019.
    I also have over 30 years experience in pipeline repair and maintenance.
    I'm also the designer of the caphead spool valve that was used to stop the deep horizon's macondo well spill.
    In June 20, 2010 I watched news coverage as the horizon spill response crew used in robotics to cut bent sections of pipe away from the wellhead. This left several feet of pipe sticking out of the seafloo, the wellhead pipe also had a flange several inches from the pipe end. My caphead design could be lowered onto the wellhead and lock on by using lugs or wings that would secure by locking on behind the pipe flange. At the bottom of the caphead I,used hydraulic chevron seals that would use the wells own pressure to force the chevron seals down sealing the spill.
    The flow could now be directed towards the surface where it could be recovered onto a barge or tanker. Once the flow is controlled pressure could be overcome by using a tritan downhole pump and inject the sealant of cement/ slurry mix until the well has been completely filled. The caphead remain in place until the sealant hardened.
    On the same day found out that BP had a website asking for help called the "horizon helpline". I called and spoke with horizon personnel and let them know I had a caphead design that would stop the spill. They asked to see so I submitted to them.i neglected to patent my design and was later informed that my design was unusable. When I tried calling the helpline back I found it had been discontinued. Several weeks later I watched news coverage as my caphead design was lowered onto the macondo well stopping the spill. Later I emailed British petroleum only to be told that since I didn't patent my design had been claimed as their design. So for my contribution I was slapped in the face and brushed off.
    I tried finding legal representation, without success and still have a claim filed at the BPCLAIMS.ORG
    9 years later I received a shoulder injury on the job and had orthoscopic surgery and had 6 months off recovering. This left ample time to go over ocean based oil production drill platform equipment designs of which the blowout prevention system that failed the deep horizon still in use by all ocean based oil production drill platforms. If upgrades to them are not made we can expect to. See more spills in our future.
    I have he safer and better designed bop systems that can be tested periodically as well as control valves that are designed to be repaired or maintained. This design will isolate pressure and if testing reveals the bop needs repair can be done and the well returned back to production.
    The older type bop will need upgrades designed around them as the system is pressurized. The annular valve used as a pressure flow control, until it gives out and the blind shear rams used only when abandoning the well after it has been filled with sealant.

      How well do you thing a blind shear ram with multiple blade like a pizza shape would work if they all closed around the pipe kind of like a mechanical iris?

      I think this is to avoid a fishing maneuver in case of closing the blind rams first, but im not sure
