- At 4.5 times more volume than the original Flatfender Willys MB and Ford GPW, Big Willy might land us in jail if we drove it outside the US. And when it's parked next to a restored 1942 WWII military jeep, the 1.648:1 scaled hand-built Willys replica makes Nicole look like a five-year-old girl behind the 27" diameter steering wheel. A Burning Man spectacle, Ian Liljeblad's WWII veterans' tribute is a capable off-road machine, complete with rear steer, Warn locking hubs, Dana 60 axles, Offroad Design Magnum planetary gear reduction box, differential lockers, and a Cummins R2.8 diesel crate motor.

This 'Willy's' is nuts to the power of bonkers. It's brilliant. All hand made to make everyone take many second looks at it. The fact that it drives and not just a show piece makes the whole thing so much better. This is one hell of a big Willy. Forget the Lambo's and Ferrari's this car is epic for attracting attention. It would be crap on the tiny UK roads but off road it would be something else. For shear presence it's a winner.

This is beyond cool, love all the Puns…it’s so Hilarious🤣😂!!! My Family was in the armed services. My Dad was a Sergeant in the US Army stationed in Germany thru ‘62 …with a deuce 1/2, and a smaller truck , under his command…responsible for 9 other Army guys. My uncle was a US Army Medic during the D-Day Normandy invasion, and became a POW for a year…taken prisoner while working on a fallen soldier. What a great tribute to those who served!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🫡

I absolutely loved this episode. It is almost exactly what I thought I was going to build many years ago. I was going to copy the body of my 1945 Willie’s MB and scale it up to fit the chassis of my 1952 M-37 Weapons Carrier. It would have been slightly smaller than this Big Willie build. My M-37 has a Ford 300 in-line 6 cylinder engine in it and it has more power than it needs. Top speed is in the 50 mph range.
This build is excellent in every way. Bravo!

Hi, I am in Australia and anywhere but private property with no public access this vehicle would be illegal, even on private property it would have serious personal liability insurance issues if you took a passenger in it. But that also applies to sit on lawn mowers if you exceed a given speed so not a very high bar on liability. A a "home" build it is very impressive with a lot of glossed over details in relation to plasma cutting and fabrication, thank you for the time in producing this post. Bye Duncan

There is a mini version being sold at Tractor Supply in my area, and it is a cute little thing, useless for my needs, but hopefully, there are buyers out there who do have a use and enjoy them!

I saw that one at Tractor Supply literally the week after we filmed this and had the exact same thought! That would have been hilarious to see all three in a row, Goldilocks style!
Legally here in GB 🇬🇧 this would be fine to drive (you can drive your own tank here if you want to) , it's basically a truck sized vehicle. I know of loads of one off vehicles like this, you just need to meet the IVA (individual vehicle approval) requirements to make them Road legal.
