It's something you could tell right away without even trying out the phone itself. Quad/Nonacell sensors perform almost always worse in full resolution than in binning mode, while it takes a lot longer time to process each photo. It's been proven by many devices that use the similar sensor structure.
Let me add some more to this list: they ditched the variable aperture, and heart rate sensor, as well as implementing a flatter display. Oh, and they removed the bixby button.
@@meg_Lepi Why? the 3 times bigger 108MP sensor can capture way more light anyway and it's a different sensor tech so there's a high chance it's not compatible with Samsung's variable aperture solution anyway.
The part about zooming is really surprising, and frankly very misleading on Samsung's part. If Apple tried to do what Samsung is doing, they'd get a ton of backlash.
Apple can cure the world and give exactly what ppl ask for and there’s always someone out there to complain. Even if Others did/didn’t take the opposite direction
Like from you guys? Most of the tech reviewers pointed out these information. Most users don't even have an 8K TV or anyway to edit 8K footage. The fact that Samsung can wring out this resolution is a good start so that mid-range brands like OnePlus can do it on the cheap.
@@IAmAPhan I haven't seen a single tech review that mentions it apart from this one. I'm not talking about the quality of the zoom (although it doesn't look fantastic either), just the fact that they were deceiving about how much optical zoom there actually is.
And just so you know I am an apple user for 4 years since iphone 6 and I currently use iPhone 11 pro max ...but it is very clear that s20 ultra is far better in every category
the telephoto is not a telephoto but a wide and uses crop to create zoom. so no 8k video is at 3x zoom as you think its a typical 64mp wide that can create 3x zoom (crop) and can shoot 8k
One error, you stated that only the Ultra is multi-band 5G. Actually both Plus and Ultra have the low band and high band 5G. Only the standard S20 is low band only so it will not be offered by Verizon for now since they only offer high band 5G (mmWave).
I tried the phone yesterday at a retailer. A photo I took was blurred because the guy in the background moved his hands to keep his phone in his pocket. Samsung phones' camera software is known to slow down shutter for strange reasons and this phone wasn't an exception. 8K video is taxing on the CPU that makes the viewfinder lag that adds to the already low 24fps. You don't get any stabilization as well. My suggestion is whoever tries the phone, tests these out as well. I live in Asia so I can't say if it's attributed to the more inferior Exynos chip. The ultra costs $1,900 where I live so I'm skipping the S20 series.
I tried S20 Ultra as well in a shop. I tried to take a picture of my friend walking in a distance using the main camera. I prssed the shutter button when he was in the centre of the frame, and then tapped the gallery shortcut immediately after. It was processing the photo and my friend was still in the middle, but then after a second or so he suddenly disappeared and got lost out of the frame. There seems to be some problem with handling motion on S20 series: artifacts are terrible and the processing is fairly long, maybe because of earlier software version?
Does the S20 ULTRA use OIS when record 8k video? Does the S20 ULTRA use OIS when record 4k60p video? I know the camera has OIS but that's not the same as using it. my S9 has OIS but doesn't use it when recording 4k60p only in use when recording 4k30p.
The extra shutter lag is confirmed. I tried it yesterday- The s20 ultra has a standard 3:4 shooting mode (12mp pixel binned) and a 3:4 108MP mode. But that's only meant to be used in very bright light scenarios. As 108mp shots have very small pixel sizes, a vibrant light source is imperative. The standard 3:4 had no shutter lag.. good for all round environments but yes.. photos will be 12MP , less sharp than 108. However these were retail models, samsung usually pushes heavy software updates right out the box so I dont expect shutter lag to be as bad when fully released. But each pic I took was 18-23 mb (108 mp mode) so ofc there will be some lag. Standard mode was 3-4mb
1-Also, in s20 ultra Samsung stepped down from dual pixel autofocus to PDAF However this is not the case with s20/20+ 2- s20/20+ full hd 960fps S20ultra hd960 (not even true 960 )
@@gurnoorsinghsandhu3511 I never cared for slow mo so I guess as a consumer it does not really phase me. I hated Dual Pixel, anytime the subject moved even slightly the picture would come out blurry, and more times it would focus on subjects in the foreground and not what I would want it to lock in on. PDAF lets you choose, Samsung is shifting away from the narrative of "auto" mode, and giving users more choice and flexibility ("manual mode") i.e smart ISO, pro video and photo mode, Phase detection AF). Will need to see final released phone tho. The demo models dont have any of the software patches that i know Samsung is already cooking up, but the switch to PDAF will not be negative.
good video.....but on regular s20 its not 2x optical upped to 3x hybrid optical....its actually not true optical at all...its 1x upped to 3x via software.
Thank you for the video, I am going back and fort with S20+ and S20 ultra. I like the Ultra put I saw other reviews that the camera on the Ultra that anything higher than 20X zoom is digital and no longer clear and not really realistic. But I really like the front and rear camera (40mp/108mp). You mentioned that the only true 5G is S20 Ultra but the highlighted description @ 6:54 listed the two larger phone(S20+ and S20 Ultra) will carry true mmWave 5G. Which one is correct?
I'm usually willing to spend extra money for the latest and greatest tech, but I'm still using my S8+. Didn't see enough improvement over the last two generations to make it worth upgrading. I am however very excited for the S20 and have put my preorder in😁
The Selfie cam on the S20 Ultra isn't more capable in low light... they literally took the S10 selfie cam and sliced the pixels into four to achieve this 40MP, just to recombine them to 10 again... They improved absolutely nothing, they just wanted another big number on the spec sheet... There's also a #11: While recording 8K, even at only 24p and without any stabilization etc., you're (according to SamMobile) limited to only ONE minute of recording which is laughable. Samsung literally only focused on HUGE numbers on the S20 without carrying at all about how much sense it makes or if these features are even fully developed... There's also a #12: Samsung removed the variable aperture on all S20 models AND they removed Dual Pixel AF on the S20 Ultra.
All the things you have mentioned are tested already by other reviewers and it's not what you said!! They are all amazed since they are reviewing it with the actual unit on their hand unlike you!!!
Make Sense at all, this is very informative and help tips for people to think and spend do much money fir something isn’t necessarily needed. Job done 👍👍👍
Thank you Max Tech for pointing out some serious stuff that was not mentioned. Can you make it clear that when you use the portrait mode, will it be 4X? Thank you.
The 100x zoom was tantalizing: I had visions of getting rid of my heavy Nikon camera and zoom lens. Finding out that it's a fancy digital zoom soured me immediately. The aggressive promotion of the zoom lowered my trust in Samsung.
To some people in the comments, if you hate apple "as me" it's not OK to defend samsung mistakes and misleading event, 100X zoom is bad in quality and useless and the prices are insane, 8K videos is useless too because 1 minute will take 1TB

Let's talk tech here - do Iphones even have : High refresh rate displays Ultra High Res Displays 5G support 8K recording Such good optical reach No right ? And still they are damn expensive just for that logo. There you have it - things that Apple hides from it's customers, using it's logo.

Max you say only the ultra will use mmWave 5G and put up the specs at 4.22 from Samsung in a highlighted box it clearly says the S20+ and the ultra will have this capability with only the smallest S20 losing out
My man, can you do a video on external drives, raid, SSD’s; drives, etc. how much storage to get on a laptop, 512 GB- 1 TB-etc, and do you always need external storage if your laptop has a lot to begin with, what are the best, etc. lol I’m just confused on the whole subject and I would like to purchase a MacBook Pro 16 in for video editing and perhaps photo editing..... thank you

No way the Samsung Galaxy S 20 is worth that outrageously high price! The iPhone 11 is half the price and in an independent study that was recently compacted the iPhone CPU was proven to be 3 to 6 times faster than all Android CPUs, including everything that Samsung uses, so the Samsung is 5 times more expensive than it should be when you look at the dismal performance it delivers.
Also the fact that the ultra wide went from 16mp to 12mp doesnt matter it's the software that factors into images the most not MP so even though its only 12mp still should be a better wide picture then the s10+
Hot discussions here ... Is it because of Max Tech? In fact, what was said here, I saw expressed by other reviewers, but none so clear...Without a doubt, this method used to raise the price so much, is not okay. The phone definitely has qualities and technical intelligence embedded in it (S20 ULTRA). My question is: what do you do when you find out that there is another phone at half price, with about the same performances and facilities ... My proposal for Max Tech is to make a comparison between the Mi 10 Pro and the S 20 Ultra...After that we can talk with the books on the table .
Max Tech, #1, you mean switch to 120Hz resolution dropped to FHD+, some pixels on the screen will turn off to display from 511ppi to 381ppi? You can be serious right? #2, if a 64MP sensor with 2x optical zoom (3x hybrid zoom) lens, switch to 8K video uses only 33MP on the sensor, what zoom ratio do you think it will become? Some extra home work you needed here.
Omg it makes me cringe when he says x rather than ‘times’ when referring to the zoom. Same hing with the iPhone. Everyone calls it the x rather than the 10
As a engineer EVERYTHING is a trade off. Do any of you realize that 30 years there was no technology on the planet to have all this in a package this size? How whinny has society become? How they arrive at the destination is not as important as the fact the manufacturers DID arrive there.

@@UltraFighter18 yeah, but it would be nice to have it. Or at least make an f1.5 lens
@@meg_Lepi Why? the 3 times bigger 108MP sensor can capture way more light anyway and it's a different sensor tech so there's a high chance it's not compatible with Samsung's variable aperture solution anyway.
@@UltraFighter18 fair enough. But what about the cheaper S20s? They aint got the 108 sensor
@@mr.degenerate4265 why i liked it i use it for spotify quick access
the "telephoto" lens is only 6% zoomed in, not 300%...
Didn't know that until now. Well, i'm still buying it. 😊😊
Just one query that will it be wise to upgrade to S20 Ultra from Note 10+ ? Please do answer my query
The part about zooming is really surprising, and frankly very misleading on Samsung's part. If Apple tried to do what Samsung is doing, they'd get a ton of backlash.
SCtester thats very true
Apple can cure the world and give exactly what ppl ask for and there’s always someone out there to complain. Even if Others did/didn’t take the opposite direction
Like from you guys? Most of the tech reviewers pointed out these information. Most users don't even have an 8K TV or anyway to edit 8K footage. The fact that Samsung can wring out this resolution is a good start so that mid-range brands like OnePlus can do it on the cheap.
@@IAmAPhan if most users dont have 8k tv or anything then why mid range brands need to do it even on the cheap? dont u think it will be useless?
@@IAmAPhan I haven't seen a single tech review that mentions it apart from this one. I'm not talking about the quality of the zoom (although it doesn't look fantastic either), just the fact that they were deceiving about how much optical zoom there actually is.
And just so you know I am an apple user for 4 years since iphone 6 and I currently use iPhone 11 pro max ...but it is very clear that s20 ultra is far better in every category
U think it's worth updating to s10 plus or the S20 from a s8 plus. I need ur honest opinion
What phone ur updating from?
At the end of the day user experience is all that matters!
Most of it has already been known. You expect a 5 hours of unpacked event?
The phones aren't as expensive as you think, in my country, the 4g s20 plus is only 984 dollars, which is way more affordable than the 1199
Exchange rates and games "decides" of its expensive
@@tcntad87 I don't think so, the 5g version is the same price as us so if you can buy the 4g one
@@yab3146 Same here, but sadly it's using Exynos not Snapdragon tho
true. here in saudi, iphones are still more expensive than the new galaxy s20s.
@@obidean3964 I don't think it's that big of a deal, the difference is probably less than 5%
This is a real review. Not just a repeat of press announcements.
the telephoto is not a telephoto but a wide and uses crop to create zoom. so no 8k video is at 3x zoom as you think
its a typical 64mp wide that can create 3x zoom (crop) and can shoot 8k
*They didn't mention ufs 3.0 in the specs so maybe only the ultra is using ufs 3.0*
Wrong, all 3 S20 series phones come with UFS3.0 internal storage
@@KMJ-jq8kw it's not listed in the spec which means probably only certain models have it.
@@bushgreen260 bushgreen Not listed and yet you came to a conclusion "S20 Ultra or probably only certain model" speculation? What's wrong with you?
@@KMJ-jq8kw they Do that when only certain models have it they will not list it.
@@bushgreen260 All S20's have UFS 3.0. Give it a rest man.
One error, you stated that only the Ultra is multi-band 5G. Actually both Plus and Ultra have the low band and high band 5G. Only the standard S20 is low band only so it will not be offered by Verizon for now since they only offer high band 5G (mmWave).
You can add to it, that we can't plug an external stereo microphone, I didn't found any plugs that allows that.
Who cares if it's hybird or optical zoom ? As long as it delivers. No one is gonna care
Big facts
1-Also, in s20 ultra Samsung stepped down from dual pixel autofocus to PDAF
However this is not the case with s20/20+
2- s20/20+ full hd 960fps
S20ultra hd960 (not even true 960 )

Great video
I was searching for something like this
I hope you do this to apple as well
Doubt it.
Why? Something you want too know about your iPhone?
Stupid apple fan boy's posts...😒
How do I share photos to a Messenger contact on Galaxy S20 SM-G981 with no Quick share option? The old procedure doesn't work for me.
never trust any android on paper unless there is a real life review
Same with apple
Sure because the ipad was better that you could bend with your little finger. Lol
It's like that with all tech
Never trust a TH-cam video unless there is a real life review.
The rear camera on my phone is 48mp, the s20 ultra has a 40mp front facing camera 😤
My mind totally changed, going to visit their competition.
good video.....but on regular s20 its not 2x optical upped to 3x hybrid optical....its actually not true optical at all...its 1x upped to 3x via software.
Is this just a "display" model only as I don't see the typical ear piece at the top for using the phone itself.
So is it worth getting the ultra over the + ?
I'm usually willing to spend extra money for the latest and greatest tech, but I'm still using my S8+. Didn't see enough improvement over the last two generations to make it worth upgrading. I am however very excited for the S20 and have put my preorder in😁
Beautifully explained. I really appreciate U 👍👍
The Selfie cam on the S20 Ultra isn't more capable in low light... they literally took the S10 selfie cam and sliced the pixels into four to achieve this 40MP, just to recombine them to 10 again... They improved absolutely nothing, they just wanted another big number on the spec sheet...
There's also a #11:
While recording 8K, even at only 24p and without any stabilization etc., you're (according to SamMobile) limited to only ONE minute of recording which is laughable. Samsung literally only focused on HUGE numbers on the S20 without carrying at all about how much sense it makes or if these features are even fully developed...
There's also a #12:
Samsung removed the variable aperture on all S20 models AND they removed Dual Pixel AF on the S20 Ultra.
stil better than the phone you have so shut up
my audio out put does not stay on MY phone, it keeps jumping to gn, how do i fix that.
All the things you have mentioned are tested already by other reviewers and it's not what you said!! They are all amazed since they are reviewing it with the actual unit on their hand unlike you!!!
I've just got mine s20 ultra and I can say it feels like a phone from another planet. It's worth all 1400$.
So Samsung's 3x zoom is just 2x zoom cropped in. Isn't then the huawei p30 pro with its 4.6x optical zoom much better than the new s20?
To some people in the comments, if you hate apple "as me" it's not OK to defend samsung mistakes and misleading event, 100X zoom is bad in quality and useless and the prices are insane, 8K videos is useless too because 1 minute will take 1TB
Your being an Apple supporter, your jealousy against Samsung clearly shows in this video. You are like a high school failed student trying to bring out flaws of a graduate. Let's talk tech here - do Iphones even have :
High refresh rate displays
Ultra High Res Displays
5G support
8K recording
Such good optical reach
No right ? And still they are damn expensive just for that logo. There you have it - things that Apple hides from it's customers, using it's logo.

One question: Can you use optical zoom in pro video mode on the S20 ULTRA? Great vid, by the way!
Thanks for getting right to it. Your review is hella informative and chock full of information. Thanks
I gonna see when the phone comes out,to make sure all those things....
The 120hz can be changed with an update to enable it at 1440 despite the battery drain. So no big deal there
Tomorrow 11/3/20 my S20 Ultra arrives. I now own an iphone 11 pro max. I'm excited about this ultra S20
Thank you taking about those things, it really helps
The sensor is bigger on the ultra wide lens vs the s10. Therefore pixels are bigger. That's more important the the number of pixels
Good detailed tech specs that your average customer probably won't care too much about. But we'll see how all this plays out in real world testing

Some of these are crucial lol. Good job!
Dam I didn't get a chance to see your video before I purchase to phone, and I have to say I enjoy it very much so far.
Also the fact that the ultra wide went from 16mp to 12mp doesnt matter it's the software that factors into images the most not MP so even though its only 12mp still should be a better wide picture then the s10+
Thank you. U just helped my decision
S10e is the best phone I have ever owned. I don't need to upgrade unless it is dead.
This is an excellent video. Thanks for all the work you have done to keep us informed.
Max Tech,
#1, you mean switch to 120Hz resolution dropped to FHD+, some pixels on the screen will turn off to display from 511ppi to 381ppi? You can be serious right?
#2, if a 64MP sensor with 2x optical zoom (3x hybrid zoom) lens, switch to 8K video uses only 33MP on the sensor, what zoom ratio do you think it will become? Some extra home work you needed here.
It's not 2x optical zoom, more like 1.05x (which is basically nothing).
I don't understand 40MP to 10MP, 108MP to 12MP, what is that mean?
U r awesome, man, thank you for this video
Omg it makes me cringe when he says x rather than ‘times’ when referring to the zoom. Same hing with the iPhone. Everyone calls it the x rather than the 10
As a engineer EVERYTHING is a trade off. Do any of you realize that 30 years there was no technology on the planet to have all this in a package this size? How whinny has society become? How they arrive at the destination is not as important as the fact the manufacturers DID arrive there.
Great... Gonna get it

Sadly I'm hanging on to my s10+ specifically because I'm not ready to part with my headphone jack I still use it when my wireless headphones or ear buds die
The s20+ is capable of using mm wave 5g signals, I sell the s20 and plan on getting the plus for that feature specifically
The higher aperture is there for a natural bokeh effect provably
You need a lower F stop number for the natural bokeh effect, not higher
1# will obviously be allowed by update. There's no reason other makers using Samsung screens can have big refresh and QHD and Samsung can't.
