I live a few blocks from a Trader Joe's and he is honestly being nice. Granted I don't go for authentic Mexican, I go to pick up something to stick in the microwave when I'm lazy. The tamales are bad, the masa is not good, I don't know what he was talking about, the guy that called it crumbly was spot on. There isn't anything Mexican inspired I get on the regular.

Nope he lost once he said the outside of the tamale look good! No is does not ! Not what a real tamal looks like from the outside. It literally look like it was just wrap for looks .

Some of the texture issues are definitely cause buzzfeed microwaves everything instead of cooking everything the labeled “preferred” method

A seasoned electric panini grill works for this issue...good comment!
I use a bamboo spatula to hold the panini grill up from squishing down and over steam.

I'm a Mexican from Mexico and that food looked good for it being frozen food... Comparing frozen food to home-cooked food is the dumbest concept ever. No matter what brand of frozen food you get it'll never be as good, especially if you just microwave it. They should've at least fried the taquitos and given them a little salsa for them, that would've totally changed the outcome. Those looked pretty good for American tamales; every Mexican tamal I have ever seen has been closed (or almost closed) on both sides. And burritos do exist in the North part of Mexico, but they don't normally come with rice and whole beans.
BTW, y'all need to stop saying "tamale"... the singular noun is TAMAL.

@Ginger Yup, there are lots of Anglicized words, pick your fights, that's not one. English is about 1/3 French, but words change spelling, meaning, and pronunciation is almost unrecognizable.

Flour tortillas came with the Spanish
They were only able to grow them in the northern Mexican climates but after a few hundred years they’ve adapted in those states to a staple
In chihuahua I feel like you’re more likely to find a burrito over a taco
Not because of America just because of the climate being able to grow wheat

Burritos are from Mexico, they were invented in Chihuahua, many even specify that in Juarez
Burritos are much more common that tacos, and are sold every where, there are even some places that claim to be the inventor of it in Cd Juarez.
Burritos tend to be a much more simpler dish here, with a flour tortilla, maybe some beans spread out and any guiso you may like (even a chile relleno, mole, etc)
The Tex Mex thing is that monstrous thing you had...
That gigantic tortilla, with beans, and all of that inside

Burritos did originate from northern Mexico, like nachos, border areas. Because migrant workers needed a portable way to carry their lunches and they (the workers who used donkeys) were called burritos… there could be some info mixed up there but yeah. It’s just that like most Mexican food it’s because very Americanized due to its popularity. The wives tale about nachos is a bartender in some border town asked the cook to make something for these white tourist ladies and he just threw together was was on hand, cheese and tortillas he fries, and the chefs name was Nacho (Ignacio)

  • @viklittlemonster

Btw burritos are Mexican, we don’t eat them the way Americans do, but a taco with a spicy filling and flour tortilla it’s a burrito, and if you look up for where burritos where invented the real story it’s that a guy that sell tacos with flour tortillas in chihuahua, he used to sell he’s tacos in a small wheel wagon pulled out by a donkey (burro) so people called him the burrito guy and with the time people started to call his tacos burritos. That’s why we call them burritos now a day. As you can see it is a Mexican food.
