- BGS Dando Drilling Manager, Steve Thorpe, explains the basic principles of drilling using a Dando Terrier rig. This event was filmed at Shelford, near the River Trent, near Nottingham, in October 2012 as a demonstration to other BGS staff. Invited guests were from a range of different science areas such as the web teams, database and programming disciplines. The objectives were to show how the drilling process is completed; from identifying a site through the planning process to actually drilling a borehole, and recovering and logging the core. The borehole was drilled through river terrace sand and gravel deposits and reached the Mercia Mudstone bedrock at 3.5m depth.
