How To Spot Bacteria In Your Grain Jars

  • Your jars may look and smell like they're good to go but may not be. Wild Bird Seed can harbor bacteria that is able to survive the sterilization process in your P.C. and that infection can cause a minimal amount of flushes, low yields from those flushes, small and/or low potency fruits and deformed and extremely mutated fruits. Here's what to look for.

IMO most of these jars are probably not contaminated - they just look like they are a while past fully colonized by a week or so.The mycelium is creating metabolites due to stress due to there not being any more food available to them since the jar is past colonized. Having a bit of that yellow metabolite is ok.

Thanks man, I just heard the term "clean spawn" a few months ago so it's still a new concept. Healthy and hungry mycelium would have eaten the whole seed, right? Those jars where seeds are touching glass and never close up aren't a good sign.

      I agree with this comment.
These jars look like they could have been moved to substrate quite some time ago.
Also, remember that the spawn will shrink a little as it is eaten up by the mycellium, which is the same reason many people use a liner in their tub/shoebox when they add spawn to substrate. So that may account for the shrinking and sliding.
I also like the millet comment, above... Gordotek uses millet because it offers thousands of more mycellium points when mixed with substrate, being that it's such a small seed.
I know a lot of people do successfully use bird seed, because it's cheap. However, most of them pick out certain parts, like the black seeds and sunflower, and throw them away.
Greatly appreciate your videos, and you taking the time to share your knowledge and experiences with us!

They seem a bit more slippery when there's excess moisture but you're right, even healthy jars will slide around a bit and/or may have a couple seeds that don't fully cover. The key signs are, myc is harder than normal to break apart, bright white smudges or spikey areas, abnormal moisture, milky marshmallow texture and seeds that don't fully cover. I guess any one of those on there own is probably no biggie but I would become concerned if you have more than two or three of those signs combined. Thanks for watching!

Agar plates. Everybody that gets into mycology will eventually start making agar. Took me about two years but I now test all my LC an agar before I put it to grains. It's also how you begin the process of isolating genetics so over time you can grow bigger and bigger mushrooms.

Let the bird seed soak 12 to 24 hours to germinate the bacterial endospores in the seeds. When the bacteria is encased in the endospore it can withstand 15 psi and 250 degrees. Used to have bacteria problems before I started soaking,

Thanks for sharing brother, very helpful. Always good to see a mycologist sharing their knowledge with others. I use milo/millet or whole oats for my grain normally, the smaller surface area has more innoculant points thus spreading and colonizing quickly. Corn is pretty legit too though, the price can't be beat and most people can source it fairly easy, some other grains can be a little difficult to find.

I think the popcorn is a little faster by a day or two if it's properly hydrated. If you make it too dry it takes longer. Give it at least 24 hours of soaking and simmer for a good 30- 40 minutes. You want to see your kernels visibly larger than what they look like when dry.

Hey I have a question I used a LC syringe on some rye berry jars and it’s been 5 days and to me it looks lke the rye is starting to sprout. Is that possible or is it growth?

    • @RickL555
      @RickL555  ปีที่แล้ว

Huh, that's interesting. I've heard rye berries can sprout from soaking a little too long but it's not usually something that happens after being sterilized. Is it just one or two berries or are all of the berries in that jar sprouting? If it's the later then toss it. Is it just that one jar or are all the jars sprouting? Could just be a freak occurrence but if it's all of the jars you definitely want to modify your soak/simmer tek and make sterilize your grains for at least 90 minutes.

@@danielgriffin5737 I wouldn't suggest going by what Renegade Mushrooms suggest. The Shroomery has good, up to date teks and none of them suggest soaking WBS. The most I've come across it being done is about five hours. More than that and there's a risk of at least some fermentation according to some, which can cause issues.

    • @cdurch1

@@ObakuZenCenter yeah, Renegade Mushroom has only been growing mushrooms for something like 20 years now, what would he know? 😆 🤣
I've watched several of his videos, haven't seen any that say 2 full days, but he definitely grows a LOT of different types of culinary and curative mushrooms, so it's very possible he stated that time frame for a specific application? Not sure...
Just watched one listed as "what should my grain jars look like" and it was very informative, and yes he talks about the differences with wheat grain vs popcorn, how wet it should be before pc, etc.
I'm beginning to see the dangers of the grain being too wet, either prior to PC or too much liquid culture. Seems it's best to lean a bit on the dry side vs lean a bit on the wet side through the entire process (including substrate).
I find these videos so helpful! Keep posting, 🙏
