The awkwardness of this scene is brilliant. In general, the vibe between mean teenagers and well meaning adults trying to be friendly is always weird and painful, but having the teenagers be wealthy and privileged and the adult be a trophy wife kicks it up a notch further into a scene that is one of the most memorable from the entire series, in my opinion.
YEAH! Because the wealthy kids act as if they were not handed everything. The irony of this scene is Rachel does not want to be a trophy wife, and tries to fight that destiny. While Olivia and Paula claim they care about social injustice, but does nothing. Well, Paula did something but we saw how that turned out.
This show is great at displaying awkwardness in conversation because it often highlights the power dynamic at play. It’s incredible how little of genuine conversation is needed to realize who triumphs over who. Like in this scene it became clear less than 30 seconds in the that two teenage girls, Olivia and Paula, dominated over Rachel and had no remorse about it. Great acting. Great writing. Great series. Excited for season 3
this is so masterfully written lol, these girls were basically interrogating her throughout the entire conversation. It was almost like a display of dominance from both sides.
Rachel was just being nice and friendly with the conversation, but maybe after when she realized they weren't doing the same, her disrobing and showing off her ("skinny" as girls would describe it and envy) body was a conscious dominance move.
Especially when the first episode started (and the first time we see them) they’re gossiping / making up their own dramatic stories for the people on the boat. All the questions they asked were along the line of statements made on the boat. Cool mirror I noticed. I really love this show
It truly was, it's like the Regina George meets Kady scene... Only this time it's an adult, a successful one, talking to teenagers and just trying to be nice 😂
Sydney's reaction and non-reaction are genius!!! The fake smile and the implied condescension... she is just such a good actress! She nailed the performance.
I agree. Throughout the whole series, she really shined... (In contrast, I though O'Grady just wasn't up to it--especially since her character drove the main action.)
Olivia and Paula's actors perfectly encapsulate two teenage girls who are clearly miserable with their lives and look down on others to boost their own ego.
@@raraszek typical for this generation, thinking they're so much smarter and morally just than anyone else while being completely oblivious to their own hypocrisy.
Love how all these comments prove this scene right and many focus on Daddario's appearance. The teenage girls pick apart Daddario's character and leave her feeling humiliated for choosing the destiny of a "trophy wife", but once she disrobes and shows her body, their jaw falls to the floor because in this society, if you are a hot girl = you win. They like to take the moral high ground and pretend like they're better for being conscious of social justice, but can't help but feel envious / jealous of Daddario's looks and devolve to objectifying a woman themselves. Her character was weighing the pros and cons of continuing her job as a freelance journalist, so that she can feel like she has more to offer than her looks, and in the end she chose to go with being the trophy wife. Because why wouldn't you in this society that places more importance on materialism and superficiality?
I love how people are saying that the scene loses weight when she flaunts her body in front of them at the end, but I think it was her best way of pushing back against these two. Sort of like a way of saying, ‘you look down on me for being this way, but neither of you could do it yourselves.’
I was so glad when Rachel undressed and the smirks were wiped off Paula and Olivia’s faces. They were so mean to her when she was just trying to be friendly.
Isn’t there a subtext that Rachel knew all along who the mother was, that she was being disingenuous with her ‘innocent’ questioning, a slightly thirst hungry grasping characterised here as being native to the working classes, while the upper class daughter sees it coming a mile away and bats her away with condescension in a way only an elite can. I think generally with the white lotus there are no goodies and baddies. Everyone is layered.
@@Cryptech1010 I think everybody commenting already knows that… which is why they are talking about the fictional characters because it is a fictional tv show that people respond to with their own personal opinions and discourse.

Her body/looks are her power. Rachel fights this for most of the season with her typically modest outfit choices that downplay her body and desire to have a fulfilling job and not just be the trophy wife. She has virtuous aspirations and is outwardly kind and friendly, but just gets repeatedly kicked around for it (by these mean girls, and later their mother who criticizes her writing/journalism). This is the one moment where she understands the power of her beauty and uses it to push back - like a silent weapon.
Notice how those two just clam up as soon as Rachel hits them with the bikini? Good to see that Rachel is aware that she's the type of girl who turns heads.
It's a masterpiece, like how they showcased human behavior and all the aspects...it's so realistic, and this scene especially is an epitome I'd say.. 😂
Also, this scene is so sad in the context of the show. The girls are basically telling her that she's a trophy wife for a rich guy, and her only response is basically to say, "Look how hot I am." And then, a couple of episodes later when Shane's mother basically tells her that the only thing that she brings to the marriage is that she's hot, I'm sure this sequence jumps back in her and you can see her thinking, "Is that really all I bring to this marriage?" And her ending is the saddest thing I've seen in a long time -- just deciding to accept it and be miserable, like it's her fate and there's nothing she can do about it...
Why hasn’t anyone responded to your comment yet? Your observation of this character makes me so curious to see the show now. Plus, I’m very interested to see how everyone else responds to this outlook of your response as well.
Yessss at the end I was like wait nooooo! But I honestly think she made that decision because she unfortunately never got that one on one talk that she needed to have and I think that’s what made her decision in the end
I don't think you were supposed to come out of this thinking they're jealous or insecure. They were basically making fun of her for being a trophy wife but once they saw her body they respected her for that, the most stereotypical trophy wife attribute. It's more about showing their hypocrisy of trying to come off intellectual but still being status quo rich girls which is a theme for them in the show.
