    When I was a young bride in my mid 20s, my husband's grandma was already in her 90s. In her young years she was on the household staff of a very wealthy family who had a mansion next to the Pabst mansion in Milwaukee. She showed me her tricks for quick cleaning as an elderly woman that I now use. She would get barefoot and push the damp rag around with her feet in kitchen or with the end of a yard stick and bathroom saving bending. She would rubberband a damp rag to a yard stick to save bending for baseboards. Now that I am getting real close to 70, those tactics have saved me many a backache. You do need a little care not to slip on a wet floor though. And if you keep the high traffic areas clean, the dust doesn't spread to the other spots nearly as quickly. But my guests never move the sofa to inspect anyway.

      Jj: I am in love with Professor Amos Shock it clean for glass. I use it on my eyeglasses even. Just a squirt on each time and a quick rinse under the sliggot has them crystal clear with beads of water. I've never seen it build up. Great on car windows too. On windshields if you use the finest steel wool dry after the glass is totally dry , and go over the window, it gets off any last tiny bits of baked on bugs or dirt. Then polish off the steel wool dust with a soft towel. It keeps your wipers in better shape not going over those micro bumps of grime.

      I agree a rag, hot water, and a little elbow grease (or end of a stick grease) are come of the best cleaning methods there are.

      Annmarie Kane Kirsty Allen is OCD about physically cleaning her huge house and says she is hyper fanatic about a “ sterile” bathroom- she insists on cleaning everything in the bathroom with the strongest grade of Vodka. Says it’s actually stronger than rubbing alcohol. She buys it strictly for cleaning. Just thought Id pass that information on. She was on Oprah and they watched her clean her bathrooms then had a scientist come and examine and look at surfaces under microscope to see if it was in fact as clean as Kirsty believed it was- and in fact it passed his test. So vodka must be the best kept secret!

      I recently was in a hospital ER with my grandson. While waiting I observed a man holding a towel by his side, he would stop, let the towel touch the floor, step on the edge of the towel with his foot and rub a small area on the floor. I thought, brilliant, what a way to spot clean a floor. Worth the cost of the ER visit.
      Also, my mom use to wrap a cloth around a yard stick to clean behind dressers and furniture, for dust and cob webs. The yardstick was much narrower than the vacuum hose. She would also put and old pillow case over a dust mop and rub it on the walls and ceiling to remove cob webs and dust, then wash the cloth in the washer.

    I wish I could clean my house this fast. It takes a half day to clean one room. :) Yes, Jealous. :) But you are naturally organized; I don't have that skill. I so wish I had it. It takes a really organized and resourceful person to live happily in a tiny house, I think. And that, you are.

    That's nice quick deep cleaning Ariel. I love it! Your dirt on the floor looks like mine. With 3 dogs, they track in a lot of dirt as well as my son and myself. I wanted a no shoe rule in the house, but that never happened with having a farming husband. Now that he is gone, it still isn't feasible with my son here as he won't take his shoes off either. So until it is just me, I guess I will have dirt on the floors. Thus one of the reasons why I need to vacuum every day, the other reason, dog hair. I have more than my share of dog hair with a German Shepherd, and two mini Australian Shepherds. The little ones don't shed as bad as the German Shepherd though. You have been lucky in that Burley isn't shedding. Great video! Hugs, Brenda

    • @FyNyth
      @FyNyth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No shoes indoors does help a lot. And keeping them on in a house after all the thing you can walk through outside is kind of gross when you think about it. I guess that's why so many cultures don't do that. Yeah I don't know why Burley doesn't shed, but it's been pretty handy for sure! :)

    Do you not compost your toilet paper/paper towels?
    Also, do you ever do any “spring” cleaning - like take everything out of cupboards/out of drawer and closets, and wipe down?

      Yep! That all goes in the compost. Not on any kind of schedule. I don't find those areas to get generally dirty so only clean as needed. And that seems to be only every 5 or more year. :)

    I hate cleaning, so it's definitely part of the reason why I intend on living in a tiny home once I retire. I know it probably gets messier faster, given all your 'living' is done in a small area, but I hate all the windows and gutters and square meters of floor in a standard house. Even the 'once in a while' jobs like walls, light fixtures, etc, are annoying because there's so much more to do in a standard home. I also like having venetians on my windows, problem being they can be the most annoying of all, so less windows is simply better in my situation. I just don't want to feel like my home is a constant battle to keep clean and well maintained. I want to spend more time and money on the things I enjoy, not 'upkeep'

    I swept the first two weeks after we moved in but quickly I realized I needed a small vacuum with a stiff extension to pick up the dust - my back thanks me for the switch. Lol! I did moan about having one extra thing to keep in our extra tiny but it helps keeping our tiny clean so it earns its place to stay I guess. Lol! Your duster resembles the one I used to have from the FLYlady days. I don't do well with feather duster so I changed to just using damp rag or paper towel to pick up the dust. Ariel, you don't like to do windows so I guess that is why you use a Mac. I have to sweep every day or more because of dust. I don't know where it all comes from other then the lint from my clothes. Why don't you use the straight 3 to 5% vinegar?

    • @FyNyth
      @FyNyth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ;) And settling out of the air, skin cells shedding from your body, etc. You could, I just find half and half to be strong enough for most things so I can buy half as much white vinegar.

    Taking ones shoes off before entering the house is the single most efficient way to keep the house clean… I’ve been doing this for 40+ years. Windows are my nemesis! I to use vinegar and water but cannot get a streak free finish on my windows ... Any tips? If this video doesn’t convince people to live in a smaller space and experience more of real life I don’t know what would?!

    Hey Ariel & Burley, I was thinking about what you mentioned about Burley's not shedding so much. My two English Shepherds can shed excessively, but, the more I take them to the river and let them swim the less fur I have to contend with. Maybe how and what you feed him contributes too. If you haven't shared anything about that I would like to know if you wouldn't mind. Burley has great markings, especially his muzzle! As always, thanks for sharing! Blessings and prayers. :)

      I suppose it's possible, but I've never noticed anything like that happening. Certainly far less than carpet. And better yet, doesn't off gas poison like vinyl, most carpet, and other synthetic floorings. :)

    A bit of diluted bleach in a spray bottle and a microfiber cloth will get OFF those scuff and grease marks we make from touching the walls and door etc. without removing paint or causing discoloration.
    P.S. my asthma is acting up just watching you dust with everywhere closed up!

    Ostriches do not molt.
    Their feathers are plucked from live birds - an immensely painful practice.
    There are so, so many effective options with which to dust our homes that do not involve cruelty.
    Why cause someone great pain when it's completely unnecessary?
    Especially for something so mundane as dusting.
    I'd much rather clean with a clear heart.
    Cruelty-free products are better for everyone involved.
    Other than that, I've enjoyed your video.

  • @eaton55r
    @eaton55r 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    And, there are other things that replace feathers (or other animal products) but might be worse than using an animal. I think I (we) need to live in partnership with animals and nature - more aware, less damage and yes, that would involve being in the cycle of life.

    Regarding the mattress on the floor in the loft, do you have any issues with moisture? My guess is no as you mentioned many times that your environment is generally dry. Just thought I'd ask. Thanks for the video. :-)

    • @FyNyth
      @FyNyth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I don't. But yes that is probably due to both the generally dry climate and having wood heat which is very dry. I know some folks have had an issue with that and needed to build a little platform or slats to allow air flow underneath.

    Hello beautiful and Burley too, you know it's a shame that you of all people have to explain every little thing that you do. If people would read instead of thinking they know everything. People if your name isn't GOOGLE then you really don't know everything do you. Best advice I can give you is this research before you open your mouth. Because all your doing is showing how stupid you really are. Ariel great video as usual wish I could clean that quickly but I have 2 dog's and the pup likes to make a mess, every time I turn around. Ariel give Burley a big hug for me and you be safe and warm. M.K.

    So you rmum never teaught you when cleaning a room to move items of furniture that way accumulated dirt can be disposed of?
    And if you do cleaning at that speed then if you ever decide on a vacation to Scotland you can come and give my place a Spring clean, should not take you long, about an hour tops I'd say!!

    • @FyNyth
      @FyNyth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well since the only furniture I have that is movable, everything else being built in, is the table and two chairs, and I can full reach under both, moving them would be rather pointless.
