I was fortunate enough to have seen The Grateful Dead play Rubin & Cherise for the 1st TIME EVER at Cap Center in Maryland 1991! It is a memory that I cherish since this song is dear to my heart. Thank you Jerry Garcia....
I was there. I’ll never forget this one Head absolutely melting with joy, his ecstatic mantra: “ it doesn’t even have to be a Jerry show ... it doesn’t even have to be a Jerry show.” Bouncing in the Cap Centre portals for this one ... not enough room in the seats.
Tio Pancho I never saw Grateful Dead but I’ve listened to countless shows and been to every dead spin off band since Jerry died and I’ve never heard a crowd like that it gives me goosebumps everytime as a matter of fact I’m turning it on now instead of this
Good version of the best love song ever. I remember after my first JGB show, running home to my girlfriend/ friends.... "They played this love song, they didn't jam it out like the others, but it was so amazing...." The days of youth, I miss em. Jerry always messes up the lyrics on R+C.lol.
listened to R&C from 9/26-loved it! heading to PC NY 10/5...cant wait...havent seen anything dead related since 93...happy i finally got a beautiful head gurl to see hunter and phil (11/1- PCNY) etc
great year indeed, and the JGB was in fine form. thanks for posting, We.saw Hunter last night(9/26), his first show in like 8 years,,he did a real fine version of reuben and Cherise.. try to catch him live,, it could be the last time, i dont know..
The Thanksgiving Massacre. My first Garcia show, Jerry treated us to an extra helping that night, Also check out Mission In the Rain. One of those special nights.
@@rickchaffin5210my brother and his friends dragged 12 year old me to a Grateful Dead/The Band show 6/21/84 at a amusement park in Canada. Good times, cheers
Upbeat song with a beautiful melody and very dark lyrics. The implication appears to be that Reuben murdered Cerise during a schizophrenic episode. He became overwhelmed by sorrow over what he did and walked around the city carrying her body until he was caught when it became daylight. Tragic.
The vision of her voice speaking through the mandolin keeps him from cheating..the course of love must follow blind. No murder involved. Its about not letting temptations sway you from your true love. However every one of these great songs is open to ones own interpretation.
@@MaryCarriger The color red is referenced several times in the song. The other girl was named Ruby." It cut through like a blade", " If you could see my heart.", " Ruben walked the streets of New Orleans until dawn/ Cherise so lightly in his arms/ and her hair hung gently down" If he was carrying her through the streets with her hair hanging down that means her heads is limp. What was the mandolin painted with ? It's not a big stretch at all to come to this conclusion.
Wasn't this a great song..... the whole album...Cats Under the Stars.... we were all in our prime... living life to the fullest....Every Day was an Event to be experienced!! Thanks Jerry! .....Miss Ya Bad!!!
I've been listening to this a lot during curfew and quarantine, and I'm so fucking pissed off at ruby for ruining a true love story. I've had a couple ruby's cross my path
