One thing I find notable about this episode is that it is one of the very very few eps of Trek that doesn't end on an exterior shot of the ship. The camera just hangs on Worf and the credits roll. Love it.

    "Steel wrapped in silk."
Probably the perfect description of the Federation/Starfleet when it's at its best.

It always bugged me that the probe clearly wasn't big enough to have a warp drive system unless it was the size of a baseball. She clearly took up all the space inside the space coffin.

13:26. Yes, it does seem a stupid strategy to leave a battlecruiser in the middle of no where in stasis for 7 yrs just in case you're needed against the enemy some day. However, from a certain point of view, it worked. It's 70 yrs later, the 'war' is over and the Klingons lost (at least politically), and the Federation has expanded into this region, and POW a ship comes out of the darkness to destroy those colonies. If not for Keylar this plan would have been just crazy enough to work, from a Klingon point of view.

My opinion: The Klingons gave in too easily to Worf. A roughly parallel case were the Japanese holdouts on random Pacific islands that turned up decades after World War II. In a couple of cases, they had to track down their commanding officer that they knew personally to convince them to surrender.
As for ambassadors being jerks or idiots, I'm reminded of one of Montgomery Scott's brilliant lines: "Diplomats! The best diplomat I know is a fully activated phaser bank."

Another excellent episode. Drama, wit and setting building. I too wish they didn’t have to give K’Ehleyr a tragic destiny. Plakson also played “Suzie Q” and an Andorian on Enterprise.
Diedrich Bader gets his “before they were stars” cameo at tactical, 6 years before going onto the Drew Carey Show.

In my opinion, they launch the ship right after the Klingon ambasador said that there would be no peace untill kirk dies in star trek 4.
I also have a theory. What if they went to impulse to scam for the Klingon Ship as on warp it can detect things light years away, but on impulse it's much more precise and accurate.. specially since this ship wasn't destroyed by no one for 75 years as it was cloaked.
Also about fire range... Since Balance of terror i have a theory.. What if the entire balance of terror battle took place light years away?
It's safe to think that star trek has the tech to fire weapons that travel at extreme warp speed to hit a ship light years away...

Another good reason for not briefing the Enterprise about the situation before the probe arrived is diplomatic. You don't want people questioning the Fed-Klingon alliance any more than is necessary (given the threat from the Romulans and later the Cardassians). Classic rule of politics: don't say any more than you need to, because if you do it can be used against you.

Why would a holodeck have locks? It's not someone's quarters. It's not a private area. It's not a sensitive area like the bridge or engineering or weapons storage. In many ways, you could argue it's a public area.

Regarding the K'Ehyler explanation, I imagine it would be something loosely based on the truth- That there was some significant event that caused the Federation and Klingon Empires to unite in some form, such as attack by a 3rd party- The Romulans.
The fact that the Fedration still has ships and Starfleet still exists, yet has Klingon commanders would be explained as the Klingons as "winning" when the Romulans attacked and the Klingons and Federation came to an understanding against the Romulans. Or perhaps something akin to America's post-WWII allies of Germany and Japan, minus total defeat where both countries still have their own militaries under the American umbrella. This explanation could tide things over until the Klingon ship arrives.
Also, to expand on what Lorerunner said about Worf's "negotiation", I love how none of it us based on reason or logic, but instead is almost solely on Worf's authority and strength. A writer with less understanding of the Klingon's would have been tempted to use a diplomatic explanation ala typical Starfleet, when in fact that would only make the Tong's captain even more suspicious and aggressive. As Lorerunner has pointed out repeatedly, Klingons aren't about what you say so much as how you say it and your reaction.

  • @DrownedInExile

You suggested the Klingons were trouble-makers, inconvenient, maybe even criminals, cast away in an old crappy ship.
So... they were the equivalent of the Koprulu Terrans from Starcraft??
    Mind = blown.

The idea of violent Klingon lovin' was alluded to once before now - in "The Dauphin", Worf tells Wesley that women throw things and men dodge while reciting poetry (which doesn't seem very accurate - an idea which evolved over time I guess).
The chemistry between K'ehlyr and Worf makes the episode work, and Worf's solution is a good one. Decent!

Ah, Susie Plaxson - she was the vulcan in that other episode, the Schizoid Man. I enjoyed her performance here and as the vulcan, though more as the vulcan. Why didn't they have her more often?
The probe, now that you've explained it, is a smart idea. I just missed that explanation, I guess.
The secrecy about the whole mission, I was left with a question mark about that. Oh well. Picked out of thin air, I suppose.
The T'Ong mission, to be in stasis for 75 years, is weird to me too - what kind of mission could they do that they would have to wait so long? A bit of speculation at the captain's table here would've been acceptable.
I liked the Picard-Worf exchange too, good implied meaning there.
I guess the theme here was about dealing with two conflicting halves of one's life. Troi chooses to see the best and lives embracing both of them. K'Ehylar accepts them without liking them, managing the two halves of her. Worf is another example of that dualistic struggle.
I didn't really get Worf and K'Ehylar's history at first, just that it was something that didn't work out or wasn't even tried, and he was most unhappy with her for - his own refusal to follow his feelings for her? If they were too young and immature to try and act on this relationship before, then I don't understand why Worf would be so angry at her.
I missed the 'no damage' aspect of the T'Ong fires - that does work out well.
The end of the episode has K'Ehylar leaving, not wanting being tied down to tradition via the oath, yet being serious about Worf. So which is it? Why does she leave? I don't see the point of it ending apart from being a matter of story convenience, that things have to revert to normal by the end of each episode. If she was serious, then they would find a way to continue things by not going down the road of the oath. She has her job to do, but surely there is space on the Enterprise after that.
A good episode, glad we get to see Klingons fighting and not getting beat up like before. We even see Worf in command! Great moment there. I loved that line too - 'Nice chair'.

I don't know if it has ever been brought up, but do you think you'd have to tell Data not to "count cards"? I mean, in early episodes he still doesn't fully understand the game, asking questions. Wouldn't he assume that counting cards was a normal thing if you didn't tell him not to? Humans can learn to do it. With his computer, it would just be something he implicitly did. In later episodes he proves he can arrange the cards how he wants. I'm just saying, I wouldn't play with him.

If the existence of personal reasons for Worf not wanting to work with K'ehleyr were not relevant in the end, why did Picard ask Worf about whether he had personal reasons for the request. In today's world, valid personal reasons should be sufficient. It seemed to me that K'ehleyr was creating a hostile work environment for Worf during their first interaction.

Spoilers. It's so unbelievable how fast the child is going to grow up after this encounter. Alexander grows up twice as fast as a Human, is it necessary in Klingon evolution to grow up fast to better fight off the threats on Quonos?
Or. Is Alexander a product from their previous encounter, she never mentioned it in this episode and he grows up slow?
Of course the holodeck encounter was their first intimate encounter; or just a rekindling.
    The music was good too.

  • @williamozier918
    @williamozier918 6 ปีที่แล้ว

24:50. Perhaps the rules of the holodeck is that you do not have an expectation to privacy on a public holodeck. Perhaps that's their way of addressing morally repulsive uses of the holodeck. Basically saying, you can use the public holodeck but don't do anything you wouldn't want others seeing because others may very well see it. Perhaps this one of the dark sides of 'utopia', kind of like that crappy movie with Hermione and Forest Gump, The Circle.'

The Klingon war references are the most irksome part of this episode. Unless you go with discovery (rather not) or beta canon like Fasa and Axanar, the nature of whatever war, if any, with the Klingons has never been fleshed out. I am not even sure (until discovery) that there ever was a full-scale proper war with the Klingons; perhaps border wars like with the Cards, and the only time they really come close is right before the Organian incident. So i don't know, maybe some other Klingon factions go to war, but that is still silly. There are things about the Klingons in general that are stupid and bothersome, how they hell they survive without destroying themselves or being over-run by a more cunning people (like the Romulans) I will never understand. Ezri Dax was right.

I like K'Ehyler , I always have. She seems so much more relaxed than B'Elanna Torres.
I like this episode but too many things don't make sense.
If this ship of Klingons in stasis are so dangerous, why isn't they more urgency about catching up it to them?
And _Worf_ sitting down doing calculations on a computer? COME ON!
The holodeck looks cheap, as td the monsters.
My biggest problem with this episode is not only what will the crew of the T'Ong do when they realise not only have they been lied to. But that their liason is a female Klingon - Human halfbreed?
Lore, you should cosplay, I be thrilled to see it, amigo!

I'm so with you on ST being made or broken by guest actors. For the movies, imagine _Wrath of Khan_ without Ricardo Montalban. I'll forgive _Generations_ a lot for the sake of Roddy McDowell - and the same remark or Christopher Plummer as Chang, and Laurence Luckinbill as Sybok, I get that you don't like Tom Hardy's Clone-Picard, but I think he raised his scenes from "awful" to "does the best he can with the role".

Challenging the Enterprise crew comment brings this to mind.
[POPULAR SENTIMENT] But if you have an ultra competent crew then you have a crew of Mary Sues and that's (insert anguished screeching) WRONG!!!
[REALITY] Lore is right & popular sentiment doesn't understand Mary Sues. It's the challenge that defines the story, not the character's abilities. So long as the protagonist has something to overcome there is drama. Actual definition of Mary Sue: A supporting character that undermines dramatic tension between protagonist and antagonist through excessive competence. One Punch Man is left completely unchallenged by everything (it's the point of his character) and yet the story remains compelling because it doesn't lean on the juvenile "Who Would WIn In A Fight?" to generate drama.
