Dang. RIP WCBS AM 880 NYC. I remember hearing them once or twice all the way in Chicago at night on my transistor radio when the weather was right. Now that these guys are gone, I think WBBM AM 780 in Chicago might be the last of the big 3 CBS all news stations still on-air.
Wow, some fond memories here! Back when radio news gathering was dedicated to the cause. Amazing what they did with the limited technology of the time...quite elegant. Thanks for posting it.
A great history. A memory-flogger for me as I was allowed to tour KABC in 1969, met Carl Mesmer, Bill Jones, Russ Van Arsdale and other ABC national types. I think I saw Alex Dreier leaving the building at 3321 La Cienega, after taping his show.
Those RCA cart machines were ancient in 1969. The large round button just under the slot released the cart once it played. In those days the capstan wouldn't lie down automatically.
..wow back when live was done for reason.. not just the sake of "being live." the bad TV habit of being live somewhere where something happened hours ago just because you have to use the live truck is creeping into radio ..Its fun to see all those carts (which was standard fare in my early years), but they made sure to edit the video to not show a cart misfire or better yet, the infamous cart stack drop that you used to see once a week at any given radio station.

Wow.. Back then a radio station could still afford to employ lots of people.
Man. This is great stuff. I love the style. No nonsense.

All this for a 5 minute newscast! I recall days of cart machines when I was with WLOL AM. Fun & exciting times.

You mean the pinch roller. The capstan stays vertical. The pinch roller is what pops up and lays back down.
A lot of history....Vietnam, North Korea, Apollo 11, MLK. I remember these.
wow. radio carts. takes me back to my teen radio djs at a 1000 watt am.
In 1968, ABC subdivided its radio division into 4 networks(FM, I'm, Entertainment, Contemporary and Information).
They had a network dedicated to you? "I'm"???
