How to make Cheap Custom Bump Stops For Your RC Truck Shocks

  • Here is a cool little way to making your own bump stops for you shocks! This trick has been out since the dawn of RC trucks...Haha. However I thought it would be a great idea to show the newcomers of this hobby how to make their own, extremely cheap.
    So how do you make your own Bump stops you ask? Simple, head down to your local hobby store and pick up a few inches of Nitro fuel line. The cool part about this stuff is it comes in a variety of different colors. Next disassemble your shock so that the spring, bottom retainer, and your eyelet. has been removed leaving just the shaft of the shock exposed. Spray a little WD-40 or some sort of lubricant on the shaft. This will help make the tubing slide up the shaft a little easier. The next step is too cut the desired length of the tubing that you want to use for your bump stops. You can have them any length you desire. After you made your cuts on the tubing, go a head and slide the tubing up the shaft about halfway. Then reassemble your shock absorber and that it!
    The benefits of having a bump stop on your shocks are as follows.
    - Less likely to bottom out over jumps
    - Less damage to the shock components over time.
    - Limits how far the wheel travels towards the body preventing rubbing.

    Never use pliers on a shock shaft area that travels through the O rings it can roughen the smooth finish causing abrasion on the O ring seal leading to oil leaking . You should grab at the BOTTOM of the shaft that doesnt go into the shock body during compression.
    This doesnt apply if your not using oil or using friction shocks.

    I wouldnt clamp the shaft this way. It could damage the shalf and cause oil leak.

    I wanted to lower my rustler so i could set it up for street, and I also wanted to use the gtr shocks. Im not sure if my local hobby shop only had the one length or if they only come in one length or what but i needed to figure out how to shorten the extension travel of the shock and one of the older guys at the shop gave me this same tip. However, what he told me was to put it on the shock shaft underneath the piston inside the shock body. I thought that was the dopest idea. One thing to keep in mind though is its much more important you accurately replicate the length of tubing for each side of either the front or rears since rather than length differences only affecting the car at the end of the compression stroke it affects ride height 100% of the time unless the shock is compressed. It worked like a charm the only thing to keep in mind is that if you dont change your shocks often so as to inspect how they are holding up i found mine deteriorated some number of months later when i wanted to refresh my shock build. Hope everyone takes the time to read this novel and finds it useful! lol

    Pretty cool! But won't this make the shock towers and a arms break easier? Think about it, if it hit a jump hard and your truck wants to bottom out, but there is no more the shocks can go, your a arms will snap right?

    • @RCOverloadYT
      @RCOverloadYT  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Breaking rc No not at all the tubing is very absorbing. it will actually compress down some under impact acting like another spring so to speak. Its really no worse then the shock bottoming out on the spring holder on the bottom. I can see that actually being worse over time.

      discusdog does it work? Is it safe?

    • @discusdog
      @discusdog 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      DUB2DY4 yes it does. one drawback is it stiffens the shock a little as it's like adding pre load to the spring.i made my 110mm shocks into 95mm shocks.
      with 15mm pieces of tubing to lower the ride height on my scx 10.the fuel line is soft so doesn't damage the internals.

    You're right.... I'm one of the "Old Guys"! We did this in the 80's it's also better than the original stops, because it's much softer. If you hit something HARD (like landing jumps), the Silicone Tubing will *give* a little, taking the harsh jolt out of the Suspension, possibly saving parts!! 👍👍😎
    *ONE THING....* I CRINGED when you grabbed the Shock Shaft with those chewed up, RUSTY Pliers!!!! 😱😱😫
    First, if anyone can't afford a decent pair of Shock Shaft Pliers - specially made to NOT hurt the Shafts..... at LEAST grab the Shaft at the very bottom. That way, SHOULD you scratch the surface of the Shaft, *it will be where the Tubing will cover it,* and you WON'T damage the Shaft, which will also damage the O-Ring Seals, causing LEAKS!!
    You have a great Channel, and you very often put out invaluable Advice and Tips! This was the only one that I felt was truly detrimental.... I don't want people thinking that this is common on your Videos - it's NOT.
    Merry Christmas, Carmine 💥 ⛽

      PoorManRC Will this mod handle “big” jumps ? I have a 2WD electric traxxas slash that I jump over a cooler and it bottoms out. Caused my motor to fail. Maybe a 3-4’ jump. Thanks

    • @CarminesRCTipsandTricks
      @CarminesRCTipsandTricks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@speedfreak0920 I haven't Bashed in quite a while... It was was with a very heavy T-MAXX, which had 2 Shocks per Wheel...
      But, I know that any high jump isn't good b design for any RC.
      The Fuel Line Mod DOES take some of the shock out of Landing Jumps.....
      A 2WD Slash has the motor in the rear, if I remember. Stiffer Springs would also be a good idea. You're hitting the ass TOO hard, it sounds like.
      If someone has told you this before, putting extra preload rings on your Shocks *does not make the Springs ANY stiffer!!!* They will always be the same rate, compressed or not.

    Thanks brotha. This hack has been around since the 80s but I've never actually tried until now. My sons losi mini rock crawler just got a esc/motor upgrade, and these little rigs are known for torque twist after a certain amount of torque. Sometimes when he crawls, the axle articulation is so huge, his axle will be as high as his body, still trying to throttle out of the bind hes in. Idk how it didmt break yet but I'm guessing these bump stops are my answer. Along with some free mods to reduce torque twist. Keep them comin!

    I've put more spacers at the upper side of the socks so the springs became kinda "pre-tensioned".
