Fond Memories. I was new out from driving coaches in Jersey in 1966. Back then i thought the place was crazy when the bus with 3 passenger, me and two young girls, took off from Te Anau into the jungle on a dirt track. Turned out the three of us were headed to work at the hotel at the end of the known world. A few months later after some great times with the Maori cray fishermen out on the ocean eating better than the queen I realised where heaven is. Finished up driving the coaches for Mt Cook and Southern Lakes in and out of Milford, up and down snow covered tracks to Coronet Peak and up the Ball Glacier. Plus mini buses into Skippers Canyon on tracks that really did scare car drivers. Up to the restaurant in Queenstown at night on ice before the gondola lift was finished. Wild and Happy days - things look far too cushy now with bitumen and I bet they have bridged the creeks that we used to drive through on the new West Coast road. I do remember Eric realising it was a bit deep when the water went above his windscreen wipers then he remembered the side lockers where the luggage was, OOPS!
@@modularcarpet I believe not. They were very grateful to be rescued a couple of days later - rivers can rise and fall metres in an hour. Eric, meanwhile, had done the right things collect the chocolate for the diabetics and other health checks. Competent care from the person in charge is a great relief to all.
Cooked my motorhome brakes descending the road out of the tunnel. I had to stop and pour water on them to cool them down. The Kea certainly took a keen interest. Awe inspiring drive.
Me and my family went to Milford Sound, Homer Tunnel was very interesting I had never been on a road through a mountain, Homer Tunnel is quite old though it was completed in the 1950’s, created pretty much with shovels and explosives
I went to look at this via Google earth but apparently the google is broken from 0:30 Milford Sounds is one of the few driveable areas in the country I have not been to... yet
The thing that scares me most is the Cruise Ships . You can get any ship into Milford Sound. A couple of thousand people walking all over the grass will wreck the place. I agree with you about the roads . Haas Pass ( I think it was called ) was scary in a Bus. I would love to walk the “Milford Track”. Norway is comparable, ( haven’t been North of Bergen) but I think NZ is just more dramatic.
@@beagle7622 I always have trouble with visions of damage done by X people... I have been on trail rides with 1000+ bikes travelling up to 100kph on the exact same 500mm wide tracks... and after 2-3 laps... the tracks in most places are not much different than when we started (Thats equivalent to 3000 trailbikes riding on a dirt footpath... The rubbish dropped is the biggest issue. I loved the idea of a raised rail into the area.. Cars can stop, people get out & take/leave things... a light rail means your stuck in it for the duration, looking but not touching... and if it is raised (like an under car monorail etc) it has very little effect on the land... and people on the Cruise ships can take a 2 way trip for lunch while making it a viable breadwinner.. Of course in my head that's all good... but I'm betting the terrain doesn't lend itself to a train... of course you could always share the tunnel... a lower monorail could use the center like a dividing rail in the tunnel..
@@TheButlerNZ The was something about the grasslands down there. Raised walks are a good solution but a couple of thousand people off the 6000 ton monsters can do a lot of damage.

Great experience bro
Opps indeed! Did the passengers complain about the wet luggage?

You certainly didn't copy the spelling of Homer from the road signs...or a map...or the Simpsons!
I didn't know this existed. I'll go for a drive through it at some stage
It is a truly beautiful part of NZ..
You have to drive through the tunnel to get to Milford Sound
