  • This bonus episode of Bonsai-U features the styling of a Colorado Blue Spruce bonsai planted on a lace rock! This tree was originally collected just outside of Denver, Colorado in 2017 and subsequently planted on this stone at Eisei-en in Spring of 2019. The styling in this video took place in February 2020.

Dayum! Everytime... I think "he's taken too much off, he'll never get those branches in a nice place." And then... Ethereal, and exotic. Was especially skeptical about the apex but it came out so rad. I feel like this is the compromise between Japanese aesthetics and what Ryan does at Mirai. Dope, as always~

Didn't really know where else to say this but hope all is okay where you are! I know Nashville got hit pretty hard tonight with the storms and tornado. I'm not that far away in West Tennessee and we also have some extensive damage due to tornado and school's out as well here. Just wanted to say again that I hope everything is okay there.

Wow! When I saw the starting tree I thought what can he do to transform it. A tree that was potted 90 degrees from it’s original growth position. Amazing! What gauge wire did you have to use on the lower branches and the upper branches (relative to the base of the tree)?

No idea how you can bend the branches like that. My blue spruce just keeps cracking, no matter how gentle I go and how much support I give the bend. Wish there was audio for this.

When growing a tree on a rock like that do you have problems keeping it watered? I imagine it would be harder as there is no pot to retain the moisture?

Amazing work as always I dont quite like the accent plant in the composition. IN my opinion the lush green of the bush doesnt match the rugged Spruce.

why do you scortch the cut ends? is it for color or does it help draw new growth to those areas..that might sound weird to some but my dad would always burn the dead brown spots in the lawn for that reason
