    it's just crazy to me that the late 60s and early 70s were overflowing with so many great songwriters that a children's TV show could get a composition of this stature. your arrangement is wonderful btw

      This was a cover of a school house rock song called figure 8. It was to teach children how to do their multiplication tables for the number eight but the melody that school house rock Road in the 70s was very melancholic and beautiful like haunting and I guess since he grew up watching it it probably stuck with him

      I love that suggestion. I'm in the middle of other projects but will keep this in mind.

    I hope people know this is originally schoolhouse rock figure 8 to teach children how to do the multiplication tables but the song was hauntingly beautiful and melancholic and theoretically Elliott Smith would have grown up watching schoolhouse rock at least a little bit of it so he probably remembered this song especially given he seemed like a sad soul

    This cover of a cover...so meta and so gorgeous. Schoolhouse Rock was something that got me into learning as a kid and Elliott was something that got me into music ...I love your work always!!

    This was beautiful! I stupidly never realized it was a cover. It always felt so Elliottish. I just listened to the original by Bob Dorough & Blossom Dearie. Such haunting chords to learn multiples of 8. :)

      Thanks! The original is really cool too and has that groovy section in the middle. Isn't it so cool that Blossom sang in the original?

      @@heavypiano Yeah the middle section was def a cool changeup. I went down the google rabbit hole after hearing your cover. I thought Blossom was a young girl but then realized that was her style of singing.

      That's right! Elliott covered a short version of it for a B-side from the Son of Sam single.

    What kind of material do you use betweens strings and hammers?

    • @heavypiano
      @heavypiano  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whatever I can find around the house. In this case two microfiber towels and a cotton dish towel.
