The most precise, yet full-throttle version of this tricky piece that I have ever heard. Splendid work for such a youthful orchestra! Wonderful!

I just love how it builds up for several minutes for a most satisfying resolution at about the 11:02 mark. This piece always leaves me elated.

Awesome, some extremely talented musicians there. That must be a difficult piece with all the transitions in it. Kudos to the pianist for the haunting piano finale, which is my fav part.

The benchmark recording is by the San Francisco Symphony conducted by Edo de Waart. This performance comes very, very close to that. Hat's off!

Mr. Adams takes a great many risks here, and all of them pay off. I particularly like the fact that he's got such a fine foxtrot moving along, and then Mao's wife comes in dancing a waltz, and the two rhythms come together for a beautiful payoff.

Was in a record store back in 1984-85, and happened to see that odd photo of Chinese people looking down an alley or street for some great expectation? The title: "The Chairman Dances" was curiously amusing. Never heard of the composer nor this symphonic piece. I saw that it was directed by the famed conductor Edo de Waart, and the first rate orchestra The SFO. I purchased it for that reason. Upon hearing it, was pleasantly surprised it had rhythm and a pulse plus melody. The picture on the jacket was the expectation of Mao Tse Tung & his wife walking down the alley meeting the peasants, and giving a performance of a Fox-Trot before them. Give kudos to the then "new" composer John Adams in creating this "minimalistic" sound.

A tremendous performance. This student ensemble outplays professional orchestras I've heard on this piece. For me the standard remains the SFSO/de Waart recording on Nonesuch, but this performance is nearly as good. Outstanding job!

Glad you like it - I do, too. And this is a fairly good complete version. There are lots of time signatures in this piece, but it begins with 2/2, and the middle slightly slower section is 4/4. Hope this helps!

    Great job!
My only criticism is that some of the tempos were a bit flat for me, and took away from the driving nature of the piece.
This piece would be so fun to play. Kudos for playing modern minimalist/post-minimalist music! Great selection!

This is really good! I found this song when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old. Almost 20 years ago. I still sing it everywhere I go and I am glad that I have been able to find a good, full version somewhere on youtube. Well done guys and gals!! You sound terrific! Just out of curiosity, what is the overall time signature for the main theme? Or is it not at all the same with completely varying time signatures? Thanks a bunch!

Wasn't this song used in Bad Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby in the dining room scene when Gatsby and Daisy plan to tell Daisy's husband of their affair. I remember loving this song from the ending of the film "I Am Love," which was similarly revelatory.

Mao Zedong, the Chairman Dances is basically the expanded version of a section from ''Nixon in China'', an opera by the same composer about Nixon's famous visit to China, the first crossing of the Iron Curtain by an US president.

The greatest composer alive ! Love this piece and many others, however the orchestra doesn't quite seem to "believe" it. The interpretation is good, just the players don't seem to be in the right mood. Probably didn't realize just how great a piece they were playing !
