This tug of war cannot be done fair even if Corolla is auto gear because Civic has 2 tow hooks at back and Corolla has only one which means Corolla will be dragged towards one side. Anyway tug of war usually doesn't prove anything due to multiple factors

I think its breaking because they are suddenly just launching the car. It stretches the rope really fast and it breaks from the weakest point.
They should first very slowly move thier car forward until the rope is above the ground and tight. Then they should gradually start increasing the rpms and not completely flooring the pedal.

Physics: if both cars shoot at same time the tension on one point will break the rope.
Try slowly moving both cars and gradually increase the speed when you can see the rope is not touching the ground this is where its has gone tight and ready to get the final results.

The rope is snapping because there is slack when both cars are floored. Need to first "take the slack" and make sure the rope is tight before giving it the full beans on the throttle.
