  • @timbennett9829
    @timbennett9829 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    I have mixed reactions concerning your review. First off, I totally agree that brand recognition is a huge problem. One that FCA management must not understand and is not addressing. I've had my Stelvio since the end of October. Most people I know think it's some sort of exotic Italian brand akin more to Ferrari or Maserati than to Audi or BMW in price point. It doesn't help that at auto shows, FCA placed the Stelvio and the Giulia on an inaccessible stage instead of on the floor where people could climb in and out of them....and see the base price. As far as the handling goes, I agree that the brakes can be difficult to modulate, worse when the car isn't warmed up. You get used to it. And they stop really well when you need them to. That fantastic steering? That's what sets the Stelvio apart from the competition. Yes, most soccer Mom's are perfectly happy droning along in the tamer German crossovers, but tossing the Stelvio around in turns is as much fun as you can get in a crossover. I might be a niche buyer, but I appreciate having performance akin to a Giulia, but with the practicality of more room and storage. The infotainment system is a weak spot, but honestly, it grows on you. That "cheap wheel" is actually quite useful. I can easily switch across favorites and channels using it with minimally taking my eye off the road. The voice control is horrendous, but Siri will make phone calls if you have the "hey Siri" feature enabled. One more quibble with your review: the engine. I disagree with your assessment. I think Alfa did a fantastic job of making it very tame and drivable around town, and a beast when you mash it. Just the observations of a simple peasant who has put 10,000 problem free miles on his Stelvio and loves it as much today as he did when he bought it. But the brand is doomed if FCA doesn't wake up, smell the coffee and get the word out about what the price points are. What the competition is. What an Alfa Romeo is. And that it is reliable. Even how to say the "Alfa Romeo" Maybe it should be shortened to just Alfa in US marketing.

    • @TheDrewJohnsonExperience
      @TheDrewJohnsonExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Tim, all fair points. If you like fast and responsive steering, the Stelvio certainly is the crossover for you. For this video I was trying to take more of a 10,000 foot view, basically looking for the reasons that might be holding Stelvio sales back. If you look at the numbers, they are pretty bad -- sales are rising but the Giulia is still outselling the Stelvio. You hit the nail on the head with the niche thing, and I think that goes along with brand recognition. The Macan is sporty so some people buy it for that reason, but most people just buy it because Porsche is perceived as a luxury brand. With Alfa, you really only have people buying it for its sporty nature, and that's a dwindling base these days. Unless Alfa can establish itself as a semi-mainstream luxury brand, I'm not sure their future is all that bright. I love Alfa and truly hope they make it, but in order to survive I think they are going to have to mix in some more plain vanilla. I know enthusiasts don't like to hear that, but BMW is able to make the M3 because they lease so many basic X3s.
      I really appreciate your viewership and thoughtful comment. Hopefully you'll stick around for my future videos so we can continue this discussion!

    • @TheDrewJohnsonExperience
      @TheDrewJohnsonExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're right, last month was both nothing major and not bad, but I don't think that's what Alfa is shooting for. Sergio really wants Alfa Romeo to be a mainstream luxury brand like Mercedes, Audi and BMW, and it's just not happening so far. The Giulia is still outselling the Stelvio, which is very strange in today's market. Last month was the Stelvio's first month over 1,000 sales -- we'll just have to wait and see if Alfa can build on that momentum to even come close to the segment leaders.

    • @juanvarela7634
      @juanvarela7634 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Drew, I think the reality for Alfa Romeo is that it needs to be different in order to bring in buyers seeking something other than the already established vanilla offerings from the German or Japanese manufacturers. Why would a buyer opt for an Alfa Romeo over a German premium brand if it only offers a product with identical 'soft' driving dynamics? Alfa has always been a niche player in the market because it's always been for driving enthusiasts not comfort seekers, even in its home market of Italy it's sold in fewer numbers than the German competition.The poor build quality history of Alfa didn't help it win over the majority of enthusiast drivers which is the space that BMW conquered. However, by all accounts, BMWs have softened their driving dynamics to appeal to a bigger audience, which has alienated those that historically loved BMWs for their sharp driving dynamics. This is the space that Alfa is moving into. Also, I don't think that Alfa has to sell millions of units to justify its existence, as part of the FCA conglomerate, it's only being set up to compete in a few of the lucrative sectors, while the German brands are obsessed with creating dozens of models and niches. I'm pretty sure that Sergio Marchionne had once said that his goal for Alfa was to achieve about 10% of Mercedes' sales numbers but I do hope that Alfa does bring out a few more models.

    • @juanzingarello4005
      @juanzingarello4005 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Juan Varela for the reason you mentioned. Its different. I spoke to a guy at a car wash with a brand new Stelvio and asked him about it. He was considering a Q5 but when he drove the Stelvio he was blown away. The Audi couldn’t compare to the Aflas driving dynamics. Where I live, everyone drives a Mercedes, BMW, Audi, or Porsche SUV. The ones that are even better off, roam the streets in their Lambos, Bentleys, Astons, etc. People who buy these cars, as well as something like a Ghibli or Levante don’t want to get a German car that will blend them in with everything else on the road. They buy one of these or something British like a Jaguar. Alfa is just starting their return and it will take time just like it did for Maserati to expand their dealership networks. Its only been a year since these two models were released and this dude doesn’t understand the concept of baby steps.

    Good points especially the first. 2nd they did over inventory the dealers before reintroducing the brand and taking their place in the market. 3rd I love the infotainment system because Alfa Romeo knows that if your car is measured by tech, then it’s only as good as the most recent. Apple and android changes iOS systems by the hour, and the cars that carry them gets dated as fast as their cell phones. With the system that Alfa Romeo is using leaves the relevance and currents - ness to the vehicle. So a luxury Audi and a eco Honda Accord has the same infotainment system dilutes Audi’s (which by the way are just VW’s) luxury and unique position over cars like the Honda as to why it costs more. Alfa Romeo’s system will never really get old because it’s not competing with other systems, it offers usability for the driver and it knows it’s not an iPhone. It keeps the vehicle in its place sorta speak. As soon as you get in a car and want to see the cell phone features, your not an Alfa Romeo customer. As soon as you get and a car, to drive it, the you are. #WeAreAlfisti

Guys Ferrari engines on a normal sedan and crossover. This guy is no mechanic or engineer nor professional in the sector if he is then he has been bought to say those things otherwise it makes no sense..You will read of no well renowned professional in the sector talk shit about Giulia and Giulia except for the infotainment. Even Doug de Muro remained flabbergasted.
    2) Alfa cars have incredible steering handling and stability.I have pushed mine on the highway and guys my car remained steady and it handles incredibly perfectly at curves in high speed. I love German cars especially BMW and Mercedes but I must admit Italians know how to make sporty cars better than Germans
    It’s very true in the US most American don’t recall the brand, it’s true Alfa spend very less on quality materials and technology wise they are far behind their counterparts but under the hood it’s very well known that BMW, WV,MERCEDESE AUDI can’t compete.
    In the review he didn’t even mention the Alfa DNA. The more I keep writing the more I realize this guy doesn’t know much about cars. Alfa Giulia and Stelvio have been confronted to same models produced by their competitors AUDI,BMW, Mercedes,WV, the Italian brand beat all 4 in driving, steering, stability acceleration and speed.. unfortunately Alfa is not investing a lot in the brand and in advertising but when they make cars trust me it’s fire. Now they are trying to catch up the the Stelvio 2020 and Giulia 2020 .
    This guy must be jokin, I have never heard the BMW use the Lamborghini engine in their low level sedan or suv.
    How can you talk about reliability of a car when under the hood you have engine together with some of its components coming from FERRARI?
    He said in Italy there is what ? “A small part of Italy...” ? Bro if you don’t live in Europe like us and you know nothing about Italy stop telling lies in your video. Can you please name one brand that has never hard problems ? Mercedes has had, BMW,AUDI all German brands.I bought mine 2 years ago and I’m in my 3rd year of ownership and have never had a problem nor any breakdown.

    Hey bro, honestly we can talk about the infotainment ( now they improved it, and there's also Android Auto and Apple Carplay availability) , the exterior&interior of the car (subjective...), but PLEASE when you talk about:
    1) Engine
    2) Gear
    2) Suspensions
    3) Brakes
    4) Chassis
    5) Q4 AWD powertrain system
    there's NO other SUV right now in the market that comes close to the Stelvio.

    You have to keep button of closing the trunk due to safety reasons. Driver might not see from his place what happens at the trunk eg someone still loading it. Making you keep the button still improves reaction time to stop closing immediately.

      Also he forgets that Audi and BMW have far more dealers and are much longer established as an SUV manufacturer. I think they even have manufacturing plants in or around the US. Alfa have more, smaller models in Europe (search for the MiTo and Giulietta) that would be considered too small for most Americans, so they're never going to compete, or rather shouldn't be expected to, on a one-to-one basis with just two models.

    Of course, you had to know you were going to get killed by Alfa enthusiasts. I test drove the Stelvio, the BMW X-3 and the Mazda CX-5 Signature. I even surprised myself when I ended up buying the Mazda. I thought for sure when I started shopping that I would end up with the BMW, but my head overcame my heart.
    One of the many reasons I bought the CX-5 was because it had great handling with amazing torque....52 lbs more that the BMW!!! Even with the a/c running it feels like a small block V-8 with no feeling of being strained from a standstill. The BMW also handled well and had the advantage of being a little roomier, but I didn't like the long hood. It also is and felt heavier.
    The Stelvio was actually quite nice to drive. It's also the best looking of the three and I wanted to buy it, but there were too many drawbacks that had to be overlooked and lived with. For a long term purchase I wasn't willing to accept them. And resale value will probably be terrible. Also, the engine puts out a lot of power for such a small engine. I suppose that means a lot of turbo boost and strain on the engine. However, the Stelvio does deliver on exclusivity as I only see around one a day on my daily 45 mile drive.
    I was able to sharpen up the Mazda's handling even further by installing a strut brace that I bought on Amazon for $130....fits perfectly. The Alfa and the BMW come with braces from the factory. In about a year I will upgrade the tires for another step up in handling. If one buys by looks and performance alone they will probably buy the Stelvio. But I want an suv that is highly competent in other areas as well.
    Of course, I must say that the loaded Mazda cost about $20K less which was difficult to ignore.

      Do you want something luxurious as the Stelvio is more sport less luxury you might feel as though you've been let down as the X3 and the F pace would feel more like a luxury sport SUV .

Something that is rarely outspoken and said: The Stelvio has a 50:50 weight-distribution on both axis', weights far under 2000 kg and - the best - has a 12:1 steering ratio - even lower than racing cars like Porsche 911. And this direct steering, boosted by the 50:50 weight distribution, featured by the low weight make this SUV being driven like a Go-Kart. Trust me.

The point is you can use it for that then go have some fun with it afterwards, the latter being something you can't do with most SUVs.

    I must agree about Alfa Romeo not being a recognized brand amongst the general public. That can really hurt sells when no one knows about your brand.

    That's all? Really?! Those minor quirks are that bad for you? I was expecting some serious problems! You have said nothing that will stop me from buying Stelvio.

    You dummy, I bought a Giulia and my neighbors bought a Stelvio a month later because they saw my car. They traded in their GLC for it LOL.

      Buy it! You wont regret it. Alfa Romeo is a fantastic car and much better than a regular BMW or Audi

    This car does everything it was made to do, you have no sense of racing Alfa Romeo is a 106 year old racing car company. If you don’t respect this brand and what it stands for don’t review their cars. I personally am a racing driver and for an suv that handles like this does and still have everything you need in a car and more. Besides the entertainment is perfect the 2018 Stelvio has the hardware to have Apple carplay and Android Auto just not all of them have it installed.

      If you watch my Giulia video I think you'll find that I do have a sense for the company and its history! th-cam.com/video/rpxz5pqUwjI/w-d-xo.html
      I'm a big Alfa fan, I just was not impressed with the Stelvio. I'm just a normal person, so I wanted normal steering, brakes, acceleration, etc. You are a racing driver so you want racing steering, brakes, acceleration, etc. And that's OK! Different people are going to like different cars. Unfortunately for Alfa, there are far more people that just want a car than want a sporty car. I'm still pulling for them to make it, though.

    I really cannot understand why people in the US give more attention to gadgets in a car than the driving pleasure offered by a car. Probably because you are not allowed to drive faster than 200 km /h (125 miles per hour) on highways. When you drive up to 90 km/h (55 miles per hour) every car is OK. While doing 200 km/h you do not need any cup holder or infotainment because you must be fully concentrated on the road conditions. Whatever is in a cup while acceleration or braking simply spills out.
    And only driving aggressively you can feel the difference between a 6 cup holder, fluffy vehicle and a really precise, fast car which can turn, brake and accelerate really fast.

    You're contradicting yourself in the review.
    Complaining about the fast and sporty steering in a luxury SUV, in which people just want to relax and "enjoy the leather".
    Then complaining there is no 350 bhp model, presumably to go even faster than the 5-ish seconds to 60 of this one.
    It's very hard to enjoy the leather at those speeds, buddy. Make up your mind.

    And yes, there is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you look to the left of the 12V power outlet, there is a USB port. Use a cord that goes to your phone and you will need to set your phone up for Android Auto/Apple CarPlay which should only take about a minute. Afterwards, you will be able to access apps like iHeartRadio, Waze, and more

    The GLC infotainment system is definitely worse than this, how do you put GLC into competition like this, lol
