Can old cell phones and machine learning help stop deforestation? The Tembé tribe from the central Amazon hopes so. In collaboration with Rainforest Connection, an environmental nonprofit, the Tembé are using old cell phones hidden in trees and TensorFlow, Google’s open-source machine learning tool, to listen for sounds of illegal logging.

This is why google is and was always my favourite IT company. For them its not just about selling fancy hipster devices (apple), google actually cares for our environment and society.
I like Google too, but you'd be lying if you said that Apple has no environment initiative. Their iMessage data centers are 100% renewable energy, and they break down old iPhones for parts to be used again.
Yeah but they've also been doing programmed obsolescence so that people buy more phones, also they are very complicated to repair compared to most android devices
Lucas Boisneau I'll agree with you on the harder to repair part, no arguing that. (However, I would like to point out that the Pixel 2 and iPhone 8 have the same iFixit repairability score - 6/10) The planned obscelecense thing, however, I will disagree with. They were slowing down iPhones with lower battery health. If they battery was replaced, the phone would speed back up. This was to preserve battery life. Now, they should have been more open with their customers about it, no doubt about it. But now that they're more open about it, and adding battery health tools into iOS and offering battery replacements for $30, they're good in my book. It should have been like that in the first place, but at least they changed.
Edit: I would also like to point out one more thing. I have an OG Pixel right now, but before that, I had an iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 still works (relatively) flawlessly, with few slowdowns. It's still really usable. I doubt you could say that about many 5-year-old Android phones.

I teach at one of the participating schools. Today Topher, the Google crew, and others came to our school to show us this film, participate in a live dialogue with members of the Tembe tribe, and then they built about 8 or so of the Guardians. Although the live feed was sketchy at times, seeing my students participate in and listen in to the dialogue was very cool and reminds us how small, and how connected, we all really are.

Nice to see Google is taking up projects to save the environment. But I hope other big companies come together for the cause because it's a really important issue.

Also people should stop eating animal products because you need crops to breed all those animals so they deforest for crops for livestock to eat

This is a great initiative.
To all the commentators here, I want to say that one great thing you can do to help save the rainforest is to cut down on your meat consumption. Growing crops to feed livestock is a HUGE contributor to rainforest destruction, so please, eat less meat.

If google really wants to help, they should support trying to get internet there, make them get better signals. FInd methods to collect energy there. Even better connect their data centers that output and let the AI check for that pitch in sounds.

Great re-purposing. Of course, this story overlooks the fact that there are many more trees on Earth today than there were in 1800. Nevertheless, I agree with the desperate need to halt ALL forms of clear-cutting, or cutting even ONE tree without replanting a new one of the same species.
