Indian films in general don't follow single " genre". There's always Love, comedy, romance, songs in all movies be it any movie. It may be weird for foreign audience but pretty normal to us indians.
But that's actually not true anymore although it was the case 20 years back. Most Indian movies do fall in a genre nowadays.

In Hindu belief system, everything begins with Brahmand (Cosmos) , which is followed by three Gods: The one who creates cosmos - 'Brahma', the one who preserves cosmos- 'Vishnu' and one who destroys cosmos- 'Shiva'. Basically a celebration of cycle of birth and death. Anyways, this movie is part of a Triology- Shiva being the first. Also, Shiva's weapon of choice is the Trident and Shiva's devoted pet (if you may call him) is Nandi, the Bull. Hope, this clarifies the symbolism that you witnessed. ❤
Also, 'Astra' means weapon. 'Brahm-astra' is the lord of weapons/ the most powerful weapon, which will be weilded by the protagonist. In essence, he is a weapon.

The trident(Trishul) is the weapon of God Shiva. The story is basically inspired from ancient history of Hinduism and is presented in the modern world.
Brahmastra was like a nuclear weapon in ancient India. It finished wars because everything and anything in vicinity of it would get destroyed. Brahma (creator God) is the owner of Brahmastra and it would be bestowed upon the greatest ,noblest and worthiest of warriors by Brahma.
It was a kind of voice activated weapon which would appear as arrow on the bow of the warrior who chanted a specific mantra.
Astra means weapon. Hinduism believes the human body is made up of 5 elements. Water, Fire, Earth, Air and Sky.
Question what is the difference between air and sky in hindu cosmology
It's actually not sky. It's empty space.So basically everything is matter(first 4) and space

Jal (water)
Vayu (air)
Agni (fire)
Prithvi (earth)

i hope this movie is expositional enough for foreign viewers to follow along the story because the story is heavily based upon Hindu mythology and the types of weapons they use in the movie are ones which Gods use in Hindu mythology..so if you are not familiar with the mythology many will be left confused with what a certain astra(weapon) does..like for example every Indian knows what Brahmastra is..its the ultimate weapon of Gods which has the power to destroy everything in its path and we dont need exposition for it..so in the movie if another such weapon is mentoned in passing we will automatically know which ancient weapon they are teasing while other who dont know will be left confused

Protagonist is a Astra himself, that's the catch...he doesn't need a Astra.

Thank u for reacting. I saw many other foreigners said it was copied from marvel. But Marvel is the once who has been taking stuff from Hindu mythology & now everyone in the west are saying we copied their stuff lol. From the trident of Aquaman (Lord Shiva's weapon) to Doctor Strange's third eye & his multiple arms & many things in between, everything was taken from hinduism. This movie has been in works before Scarlet witch even got popular. Before age of Ultron. Red has been used as power since ages in our culture. This movie is purely based on Hindu mythology
No one has copied from each other . Marvel is unique and so is brahmastra . So criticizing Marvel and brahmastra nothing make sense

as someone who watched the movie and knows a bit about Hindu mythologie , the love part is more of a foreshadowing to the girl's superpower in the next movie , i mean if you ask me their love story was written very quickly and kind of cringy , it's like the other aspects were more focused on and they forgot the romantic part and wrote a small script for it, even though her existence is pretty much the reason he want to fight anyway , but i suppose the way everyone fall for her immediately and the way they get much more powerful around her and the fact that she survived the brahamastra light long enough for him to come and use his powers to protect her means that she herself is power of life , or love, one of the two , at least that's what the Guru/the wise coach? called her , and his intuition never proven him wrong
You are aware of many hindu concepts since many marvel(dr strange)/scifi movies/anime are directly or indirectly connected to hinduism, the word Avatar is derived from the sanskrit word avatr which means 'to decent', buddhism is similar to hinduism..its like buddhism is the subsidiary company and hinduism is the parental company

1. A lot of people have directly compared this to it being a Marvel movie standard which is in itself a huge achivement considering that the budget for this was only 300 crores while any Marvel/DC movie budget would easily cross thousands of crores only on the CGI or VFX. Kudos to the VFX and CGI team of Brahmastra.
2.This movie has been in the making for almost a decade now so you can imagine the hardwork( the shooting stopped multiple times due to different reasons).
3. This movie is based or is inspired by Ancient Hindu history and mythology which is being presented in the Modern day setting and has never been done on this scale before in India.
The only hope now is that the story needs to be convincing enough, which I believe it will be, that might lead to this movie being a Blockbuster not only in India but globally.

yeah genres are overplayed...when we watch indian movies we come out satisfied out of it....it has EVERYTHING.
Btw in the beginning of trailer Shiva isn’t the Bull weapon. It’s the guy who later shows up in trailer with blue eyes and the bracelet. If you watch closely you’ll notice that he’s the same guy because of same bracelet and jacket in the middle of trailer. He recites a traditional chant “he nandi astram”. Nandi is a mythical bull who holds huge amount of power which is beyond explanation per Hindu scriptures.
Shiva is the agni-astra meaning fire weapon as he harnesses the energy of fire. In the beginning when he explains the girl he doesn’t burn is because he doesn’t know that he posses this power he only knows that fire never harms him. It’s towards the end when older guy tells him that reason he doesn’t burn is because he is fire himself in human body.
