Maybe it should not be unusual but I love when basses sing higher. Many bass singers are like "Huh I'm a bass so I will only sing low and I can't go higher than C4" but it's one of the most stupid excuses random basses in TH-cam tend to say. Gene is a proof that you can be a bass and you can sing high at the same time.
Oh, yeah. "I am a bass, and literally can't go higher than around C4, but screw that, why don't I try making a living out of that?" Yes, it is a choice to sing low in your register as a bass, or any voice type, but if you can't sing higher than that, you shouldn't. Train it till you can, then do it. You don't hear the very highest notes of professional singers range in that many songs.
Nekros97 no. Some basses really can’t get higher than mid 4th octave
@@matthewdockray9745 They can but they are either lazy or untrained. Check out Eric Hollaway. He is a really deep basso profundo and he can get really high.
Nekros97 you can’t just pick out random basses that happen to have high notes and say that other bases that don’t go as high as them are lazy. You cannot train your voice to sing notes that it will never reach
@@matthewdockray9745 I'm talking about basses who claim they can't sing high only because they have a low voice. About those who don't even try to learn how to sing high and "crying" later that their voice is too low for them to be able to sing high. And those basses are mostly some amateur wanna-be-singers that you can find on TH-cam. I'm mainly talking about them.
My wife and I got to see him sing bass with The Gaither Vocal Band in Des Moines at 1st Federated Church. The blend coming from those 6 men was amazing!!!

Chest fry I think. And I'm not 100% sure anymore if he actually reaches E1. It's either a sharp E1 or flat F1 I think.

I think it is pure chest, but it’s really scraping the bottom of his range. It is sharp at first but it might just come into pitch right at the very end of the word “down”
@@matthewdockray9745 It's chest-fry. Only Oktavists/Bassi Profondi can go that low in their full voice, and still not all of them, most end at F#1-G1.

Dylan Binu yep I sure can, it isn’t him by himself but he does hit a G1 or an F1 on one of the gaither homecoming vids titled lead me to that rock, the thumbnail pic should show Stephen hill in front of a fire place, he hits it close to the end with John hall singing with him too.
