I thought the watermelon story was funny and I guess as a black person I can understand how we would take something like that has stereotypical and racist. But I'm glad that they realized that it wasn't and didn't make a big deal out of it. Because sometimes other cultures across the world aren't totally familiar with what may be offensive to other cultures or people in America. And it's the same for us. If I went to China or even England I would have in the back of mind that this is a different culture and I need to be careful not to offend.
Latifa fifi ahhh, its just a stereotype that everybody thinks that black people love watermelon, hot sauce, chicken. same as how people think us Canadians live in igloos and ride polar bears to school and funny things like that, or how Americans speak American and not english, or how all of the Asian culture can only see half of what everybody else sees cause their eyes. Just stupid things like that. So from that story she told they could have been a little offended.
Well what I meant was when you go to another country people there may not necessarily know that something is offensive because of their differing cultures. I wasn't saying this "watermelon" stereotype happens in England I wouldnt know if it did or didn't. Honestly england was just another place I used in place of a different culture . I could have used India or Australia or Sweden lol didn't mean to imply anything by using England
Gabby: I think people are thinking it's [wedding guest list] a lot bigger than it is. They'll find out.. Ellen: when they're not invited? Gabby:Exactly 😂 She's funny and doesn't even try to be
My God, she's absolutely stunning and funny. I'd love for her to tell me stories all day long. She is very good at it... WAAAHHH DEIII!!! Gorgeous as well
True. In China, fruits are usually served after dinner, and watermelons and tangerines/oranges are popular choices, so those were definitely non-racist watermelons lol. Also to confirm, we love DWade in asia, he's almost just as popular as Kobe, who's like the most popular NBA player in asia.
I'm from China and just clear up the misunderstanding here, watermelon/orange pieces are the most common appetizers/side dishes in restaurants and entertainment sites, i didn't know that stereotype until now, lol
I think it's an exaggeration to make the point that he knows and loves current music while she might like 80's and 90's music. BTW, I'm a little older and Ariana Grande's The Way is on my playlist...young Mariah.
Watermelon is the best. Id eat it every single day if I could. I dunno why it has the stereotype of being a black person thing. Its damn good, so all that shows is they have good taste.
***** It really does. Sometimes I can really understand why other people and countries hate us. We're not all bad tho. I'm sorry if that was too personal of a question. Germany today does seem to be a beautiful place. Frankfurt is on my bucket list cuz my grandpa was stationed there in WWII
Meesta Rager I think the watermelon stereotype is just an american thing. I am from Germany and i have never heard of it. And clearly people don´t know about it in China xD
That may be the reason, but i do have black friends, i guess i´ll ask them if they know about the watermelon stereotype... I just commented because you looked so surprised that "Lolita" didn´t know about this. She may also be from another part of the world that has never heard about it.
lol its true i remember in high school i went with some friends to an asa (asian student association) party and they had a watermelon eating contest and me being a black person just avoided it
They went to a KTV bar, they are very popular in China. Well Basketball is the biggest sport in China so the Chinese love the NBA players, which obviously has more black athletes. The Chinese guys who are into basketball know all the players. But you have to live in China to know how racist they are towards black people. If you have your Chinese friends, that is cool but when you live in the country, racism hits you hard
+MrQlypse1 You can hardly blame the Chinese since they are homogenous society and everything they know about other races, they learnt from American movies. It all goes back to the good o'l US of A.
+HabituallyObsessed well, it's ignorance at a very high level. Some Chinese people even get confused when a black American tells them he's American. They would ask, how can you be black and be American? That's when you know, something ain't right
Yes, fruit (many times watermelon) is served at karaoke bars for refreshments. they also serve it in regular bars/pubs and clubs as well in different parts in China (or even Asia). If you are not educated or well-informed about other countries and cultures it most definitely can be misunderstood as a racial thing. However, now you know it's not intended that way.
Wow I love Gabrielle but I never realized that she needs a comedic talk show like Ellen. I know Gabrielle is busy and definitely has other priorities but she's so charismatic and funny
William Jones I know you were answering someone else, but thanks for the explanation. I grew up in the States (in the south of all places), and have *never* heard that explanation. But I guess a combination of living in a multi-ethnic hole, good parenting, and living overseas for the past 8 years has either meant that I never knew that stereotype, or forgot it. I mean I guessed it, but didn't know that was a thing.
I really appreciate Gabrielle for what she has done. I love her from this video. I was confused at first but I read some comments below. It is true that Chinese people have watermelons all the time during summer and we don't know it's racist.
She is right about the watermelon being very loved in China !!! They even serve watermelon in bars ! They even carve it into beautiful sculptures, along with other fruits and sometimes a side of popcorn. Weirdest thing to see for me, a Canadian, in a bar, but hey, who doesn’t love watermelon lol even if it is with beer.
Yea. I'm a black girl from the Caribbean and we don't have that chicken or watermelon stereotype. Actually watermelon and chicken and waffles aren't even a big part of our culture. It's definitely a cultural difference. And it's open that people open their minds
She seems so comfortable with herself, she doesn't try to sound funny, she just is!! Gotta love her.
I thought the watermelon story was funny and I guess as a black person I can understand how we would take something like that has stereotypical and racist. But I'm glad that they realized that it wasn't and didn't make a big deal out of it. I don't get the watermelon part ,how is that racist ?
Latifa fifi ahhh, its just a stereotype that everybody thinks that black people love watermelon, hot sauce, chicken. same as how people think us Canadians live in igloos and ride polar bears to school and funny things like that, or how Americans speak American and not english, or how all of the Asian culture can only see half of what everybody else sees cause their eyes. Just stupid things like that.
So from that story she told they could have been a little offended.
ughh this is just supid ,but thanks for the explanation i appreciate it.
Just to be clear, in England we dont associate black people with watermelon. This is a cold country so people hardly have watermelon here lol.
Well what I meant was when you go to another country people there may not necessarily know that something is offensive because of their differing cultures. I wasn't saying this "watermelon" stereotype happens in England I wouldnt know if it did or didn't. Honestly england was just another place I used in place of a different culture . BRING.HER.BACK!!! Very funny lady! Grossly underrated!
I'm from China and just clear up the misunderstanding here, watermelon/orange pieces are the most common appetizers/side dishes in restaurants and entertainment sites, i didn't know that stereotype until now, lol
I have trouble picturing Dwyane Wade listening to Ariana Grande. lol
HAHAHAHA SAMEEE !!!
I think it's an exaggeration to make the point that he knows and loves current music while she might like 80's and 90's music. BTW, I'm a little older and Ariana Grande's The Way is on my playlist...young Mariah.
She's so beautiful ❤️
I love Gabrielle Union !!! She is so beautiful and talented ! One of my FAVORITE actresses !
Gabrielle is soooo awesome in storytelling.. Really enjoyed this!
Oh wow, I NEVER knew Watermelon was a symbol of racism towards African Americans. Guess we learn something new everyday.
Yeah it is. Lol
LET'S GO CLOVERS!
underrated- she is very hilarious and I want to see her in like a Seth Rogen movie
There is NOTHING about her suggests she is 41 years old.
Well you obviously aren't familiar with the saying: "Good black don't crack."
Her facial expressions are priceless!!! Great actor, congrats on snagging my all-time favorite player.
WOW she looks amazing for 43!! Stunning! I honestly thought she was in her 20's
1:13 ooooh ellen was about to call her a cougar.
She's so beautiful 😍 gosh
She's so chill! Had me laughing the whole interview!!
Watermelon is the best. Id eat it every single day if I could. I dunno why it has the stereotype of being a black person thing. Its damn good, so all that shows is they have good taste.
***** it is in most of America for some reason
***** America still has alot of growing up to do. :( Its embarrassing. What country do you live in?
***** It really does. Sometimes I can really understand why other people and countries hate us. We're not all bad tho. I'm sorry if that was too personal of a question. Germany today does seem to be a beautiful place. Frankfurt is on my bucket list cuz my grandpa was stationed there in WWII
***** Chicken is amazing. I don't think I could be friends with someone who disliked it lol its that good :D
The KKK used ALWAYS use it (along with chicken) as a from of propaganda when displaying black ppl in the media.
I am here to confirm that watermelon is regularly served in Chinese karaoke place.
pretty sure that's what she said
Dwayne is such a good guy and she's a sweetheart. So happy for them :)
didnt he get some other girl pregnant? :/
He got another girl pregnant when he and Gabrielle briefly broke up. Yah he's a good guy....
slamdunk750 how brief was briefly?
three months in early 2013 and this breakup was because they had conflicting careers. He had basketball and she had her acting.
slamdunk750 Oh ok, well yea a lot can happen in 3 months but he should have been more careful
It's true! I'm Chinese. Watermlon is a gift, it's brought to everyone! Even if you get your nails done!
She looks 20 not 40!
Black don't crack
She's so sweet, and such a good storyteller!
I loved this interview with Gabrielle. She was so personable & Funny. I think she will be a beautiful bride!
Still cant believe shes in her 40s
I love her personnality !! And I laughed when she said "special non-racist asian watermelon" ! Lmao !
Gotta love her...She's so proper and down to earth!!!
I didn't know there was a racist watermelon stereotype until now.
lol do you not have any black friends? or watch any vines?
Meesta Rager I think the watermelon stereotype is just an american thing. I am from Germany and i have never heard of it. And clearly people don´t know about it in China xD
rotomi89 of course you haven't heard about it (which is a good thing) when only 2% of your population is black.
That may be the reason, but i do have black friends, i guess i´ll ask them if they know about the watermelon stereotype...
I just commented because you looked so surprised that "Lolita" didn´t know about this. She may also be from another part of the world that has never heard about it.
Very true. i just assumed she was american. You guys at germany know about the fried chicken stereotype right? lol
lol its true i remember in high school i went with some friends to an asa (asian student association) party and they had a watermelon eating contest and me being a black person just avoided it

Their racist attitudes can be seen in other countries actually....even in North America.
Not all true, even when they live in North America they are still that way
she is so funny : no wonder Wa-de (lol) was attracted to her

Gabrielle is so effortlessly funny and warm.
I love Ellen's laugh!!
YEEEEAAA. FINALLY, A NBA PLAYER WITH A WIFE THAT HAS A PERSONALITY. YOU GO DWYANE WADE, FOUR FOR YOU.
I don't know why Americans say black people love watermelon ? someone can explain me why ?
From experience I can only say that soul food is THE big thing, at least for the African Americans whom I met living in the so-called South.
William Jones
I know you were answering someone else, but thanks for the explanation. I grew up in the States (in the south of all places), and have *never* heard that explanation. I really appreciate Gabrielle for what she has done. I love her from this video. I was confused at first but I read some comments below. It is true that Chinese people have watermelons all the time during summer and we don't know it's racist.

Yea. I'm a black girl from the Caribbean and we don't have that chicken or watermelon stereotype. Actually watermelon and chicken and waffles aren't even a big part of our culture. It's definitely a cultural difference. And it's open that people open their minds
I learn those stereotypes through the vines :p
