The original upload of Phoenix from 2015 was taken down due to significant sound problems. This upload is of the highest quality, as it comes from the 2018 remixed and remastered version of the album, included in the "Wishbone Ash - The Vintage Years 1970-1991" box set. Enjoy!
Bird rise high from the cinders Leave it all far behind All the ruins and the fire Bird raise your head from the ashes Many men lay dead You can see them like I Phoenix rise Raise your head to the sky
born in 75 i grew up with this! in my teenages, i rather stay home with my family singing Wishbone Ash songs with my father playing the guitar, than be on town listening to modern music. it gave a sertian family unity, and were 4 kids loving this born 75, 78, 83 and 85. we all love it and dint miss it, but i know what you mean :)
So this (as in indescribable beauty) is what happens when the lyrics are written with heart, the singer sings (I mean, sings), the bass player plays (I mean, plays), the drummer drums (way more accurately than any machine known to man) and the guitar players, well... execute magic of the highest orders...
Got to see a virtuoso performance of this summer of 73' w/ FLASH ( Peter Banks ) as the opener and at the acoustically perfect Chicago Auditorium. BANG!
Saw them live in '74. The shame that is called music today is a result of disco ending REAL rock that was Wishbone Ash. Those who are not blessed to have been listening to this when it was new, you cannot know the experience of how damned good and fun things were then, not to mention how damned good the music was. W A are what rock/blues today can only WISH it was.
Disco Demolition Night wasn't about disco really. People brought anything black or LGBT to the destruction box. Plus, there's good disco and bad disco.
LOVE this album. Way back some 50 years ago back in high school daze jammed on my guitar relentlessly to all Wishbone ash. Saw them in Hialeah 1974. What a show !!! W.A. Mike Pinera, REO Speed Wagon. Frank Marino and mahogany Rush. $7.50
I can't tell how many times in the past 51 years I've felt as low as a person can get and went to this to draw succor when all else failed. That alone should get the band members into Paradise.
Used to have this album on reel-to-reel. My parents hated it. My brother "claimed" it when I first moved away from home in '71. Strange (but good) to hear it again.
We went to their show last april near Paris, we made 22 hours by bus in the week-end, people didn't understand why we did that, but for us it was an evidence X) we had a chance to saw them live !
Wishbone Ash's first three albums were some of the greatest English Prog Rock ever. And they then went to America with an American producer and became a third rate boogie band.
This album, and this song in particular, definitely gives some Killer(album) vibes. The simple harmonies from the double guitars, very melodic bass and almost marching drums will do that. The following part with the more twangy guitar reminds me of Unfinished Sweet from Billion Dollar Babies too!
"Deep Purple In Rock" was released in June 3, 1970 while "Wishbone Ash" in December 4, 1970. Also, "Wishbone Ash" was recorded in September 1970. There is great possibility that Wishbone Ash were influenced by Deep Purple, yes. After all, 6:38-6:43 guitar part of Phoenix is identical to the final phrase of Richie Blackmore's solo in Child In Time.

Saw them play this live last night and still sounds as good as ever!
Your versions are superior to the official YT versions.
Listened to this song since 1970 and will never stop. Perfection. The whole album is perfection.
Always loved this fabulous track when I bought the album in 1971.

One of my very favorite bands back in the 70's..The generations that followed, have no idea what they missed. Thank you...
Just listening to this, I think you're right.

Only discovered Wishbone Ash last year. Having a great time discovering their back catalogue. I especially like this track.
Enjoy - you have some catching up to do!!
My favourite band of all time saw them approaching 30 times live over the years this early stuff was sublime !
bluesy progressive hard rock: my favourite genre

Couldn't have said it better myself my friend. Keep on rocking!
First band I ever saw live and still listening 47 years later!
Disco Demolition Night wasn't about disco really. People brought anything black or LGBT to the destruction box.
Plus, there's good disco and bad disco.
That guitar section right before the 8:00 minute mark sounds a lot like “Beautiful people” by Marilyn Manson!
Majestic, epic, awesome and beautiful progressive rock music. This is a piece of art music, a true jewel!
Ouço Wishibone Ash a 40 anos. Uma das bandas preferidas em minha coleção.

Hard to believe a song as mature as Phoenix came of these guys first album.

Was bin ich so froh dass es TH-cam gibt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I discovered this album in 1972 due to brilliant late night DJs in L.A. I was in high school when this album was released. Radio was good.
raw, pure, high quality hard rock/prog right from the source..
One of my favorite ones

rock at it's best!
Sw them perform Argus in 72. Dreamt about it all night and fan out and bought the record the next day.

I have this album to me it's as good as they done argus gets mentioned far more
So dumb that I just now see how much a bird's wishbone resembles a Gibson Flying V. hehe
Just me, or is anyone else hearing (the later released) Alice Cooper Group's "Halo of Flies" in the faster paced section?

Almost Ruth I’m is different. Love bth songs and I usually make those connections. Will listen again. Peace

6:38 sounds a bit like Deep Purple: Child In Time (th-cam.com/video/PfAWReBmxEs/w-d-xo.html at 5:43)
@ 6:36 - sounds familiar, but not as good as: th-cam.com/video/PfAWReBmxEs/w-d-xo.html

Hard to believe these songs are FIFTY years old now. They haven't aged a bit.

There’s a part in there that sounds awfully similar to “The Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson…..hmmmm?!?!

A little, Thick as a Brick, thrown in near the end.
see what you did there
Very Martin Barre Thick as a Brick toward the end. Then again, this came out two years earlier so I gues TaaB is very Phoenix!
