This event, Midlands air Festival, saw a number of hopper enthusiasts attend, and while I wasn't able to capture every flight of the cloud hopper fleet, here are a selection of flypasts take-offs and even the odd water spraying from a passing pilot.

This is 💯 how the Edwardian era thought we would be getting around town.
Ha Ha Yes your right, not the most practical idea, but there was a guy in Paris who flew around for a while in a single person gas airship, tied it off the his balcony above the street (Santos Dumont) what a guy :-)
Could you imagine how wacky LA traffic would be? 😂
@emergencyroomandy9425 it might be harder to "balloon jack" someone.
Thats literally a balloon on a lawn chair. Incredible
Ha ha 😂 yeah pretty much, grab your lawn chair let's fly 🤪
What are you doing this weekend?
Cloud hopping 😎😝
Lol that even sounds awesome.
😄 nothing to see hear just a guy cloudhoppin' 👍😎
It actually never occurred to me that u have to have a aircraft reg on hot air balloons i usually only see them on planes 😂
SSoooo Cooool
Is there a rig for a flying Superman pose?
ohh that would be cool, I've seen pictures of a guy riding the tank like a cowboy all good till the landing :-0
Having a 50 gallon propane tank strapped to your back is crazy
if your not too keen on strapping it to your back (the cloudhopper) you might prefer a sky chariot, where you sit on the tank, a mini basket where it stands next to you (that's what I fly) or an air chair where the tanks are like arm rests on a sofa :-) here you go th-cam.com/video/-PCF9dio0Yk/w-d-xo.html
Is there a way to control the general direction you go in?
@@qwertyuiop-ke7fs yep we control the balloon vertically and use the different layers of wind at different heights to move, if the wind isn't there at a height your not going to get the direction you need though. This is pretty unusual but It gives you an idea of the subtle changes that we can use to steer th-cam.com/video/caRAus-UK_w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5V1A1VmMWf9KBgC0
Nice, most the ones I see in the USA are slightly smaller envelope with the tank suspended on the side of the mouth and the rider in a harness. Usually around 12000 to 20000 cubic feet and limited to just over an hour of flying. They're really compact to transport and I always wanted one.
Yes ironically we have seen a growth in hoppers, but they tend to be lighter weight but bigger volume envelopes, and more fuel and comfort, gone are the days (1980s) where people flew 17,000 or 21,000 ft envelopes with a small aluminum tank (for 20 minutes 😀)
@@TheBigBalloonFestival Glad to hear it! This really excites me. I live in a desert valley and always wanted to do a balloon flight about 40km upwind and landing on the base of the mountain at the end and never figured it was possible with anything but a full basket balloon.
@@kishascape these things get really exciting when it's fast ! Legs out is not for everyone, and I'm quite happy not to test my adrenaline too much, kind of like riding a motorbike instead of being inside a car I guess.
Those are so cool
Of course, most people went to: "Nena - 99 Luftballons" and celebrated there ;)
But who went one step further and also thought about salvaging the Chinese weather balloon?
Ha ha looks like lots of fun MEME's coming out about this right now, yep let's get a lawn chair, some part balloons and a shot gun and get up there after it 😀
@@TheBigBalloonFestival I was thinking more of a sandbag attached to it, with kind regards from the US military, simply to negotiate access to its "whatever data stored". At least your suggestion is distracting enough to let the balloon travel unharmed ;) :)
@@markusmuller6173 ha ha 😂 have you seen the old history of the 'fugu' balloons that flew from Japan to the u.s. in the send world war. About 900 crossed the ocean I understand, just a handful remain in museums, such at the balloon museum in Albuquerque, sure if there is anything left of this one after it gets a 'close inspection' by the relevant people it will find its way to a good home
@@TheBigBalloonFestival Thanks for your hint. I wasn't aware of the 'fugu' balloons so far... Whatsoever, I still assume that China merely wanted to investigate latest weather events, but their balloon operators probably f*cked it up. ;) :D :) Have you heard about the massive warming in the stratosphere and its effects on the polar vortex? Watch: Massive Erwärmung in der Stratosphäre - Was sind die Auswirkungen auf den Polarwirbel? , WetterOnline, 23.01.2023, English subtitles available
Would it be possible to incorporate a paragliding fan to this to be able to essentially fly anywhere?
Oh yes ! There have been a few 'experimental' designs which incorporate the two and they have an element of steerage tacking down wind. Flying anywhere is more of an issue unless the weather is extremely calm as forcing the unaerodynamic balloon through the breeze is an issue. Though hot air airships have squeezed the best performance out of the concept see linkth-cam.com/video/-mdSVUq0e_8/w-d-xo.html
That's dumb. You're dumb.
woop woop, awhile back i resolved to built one of these... or sell me one =D
Thats aloot of gass... How far can u go in a baloon anyway?
we usually fly in winds less than 10 miles / Hour, and you can get about an hour in the air for a tank that size before you need to be working out just how to get down or gravity will do that job for you
@@TheBigBalloonFestival oh that it so awesome
How far can you go?
We usually fly for about an hour, 10 miles an hour is probably the top speed for one of these style balloons, you defiantly want to be landing 🐌 slowly, so yeah about 10 miles
Hi,what distance can you cover with a cloudhopper ?
Great question. I would say in normal operation when people are flying for fun you might fly 10 to 15 km maximum, however I just checked the world record .... for (Fai category AX3) 341.36km WOW must have been going fast I guess 😀
@@TheBigBalloonFestival Thanks for the reply.
how long does it take to deploy and lift off?
Great Question here a video on just that subject. th-cam.com/video/N5tIq5xvsy8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gjHrJDkvgM9L0Xq6
So much polution in the air. Emitting co2. Please stop this hobby.
This is the absolute least of your worries. Contact any government or business and you are going in the right direction.
Where is this?
This was shot at 'midlands air festival' just south of Birmingham 🇬🇧 UK
