"Belly of the Beast": Survivors of Forced Sterilizations in California's Prisons Fight for Justice

- Revelations about forced hysterectomies at an ICE facility in Georgia have forced a reckoning with the long history of sterilizations in the U.S. - particularly of Black, Brown, poor and disabled people - and the way this procedure has continued in jails and prisons to the present day. We speak with Kelli Dillon, who was sterilized at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla in 2001 and who is featured in the documentary "Belly of the Beast," which tells the stories of women subjected to unwanted sterilization behind bars in California. She says incarcerated women are "punished" for simply requesting medical records. "If we begin to press … we are reprimanded and sometimes put in lockdown," says Dillon, who in 2006 became the first survivor of sterilization abuse to sue the California Department of Corrections for damages. Between 2006 and 2010, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation sterilized nearly 150 women without required state approval. "Forced sterilization is genocide," notes filmmaker Erika Cohn, who directed "Belly of the Beast" and spent nearly a decade making it. The film opens in theaters on October 16 and will premiere on PBS's "Independent Lens" on November 23.

In Perú during Fujimori administration and following his instructions between 200 and 300 thousand women from indigenous communities were sterelized. My solidarity with all women around the world been forcibly sterilized
Glad she is standing up for herself and finding lawyers who will fight. As anyone who grew up in the US, you can’t tell me you are honestly surprised at this. These people are sick bastards. All governments are so selfish.
I feel so awful for Kelli and other women who've had this done to their bodies. This is a horrendous thing that's been done to these women.

@Coraleigh May-Dewitt Of course I feel awful for them. No woman should have that done to them. I'm shocked that this happened. I went to the website and signed the petition and did some research. I'm not in the US but I hope that leaving likes and comments on videos like this helps to get them seen by more people so the victims voices can be heard.
@Mansa Mussa That's great. I hate that there is so much division in the world. I just hope that all good people can stand up for each other and speak out when they see things that aren't right. My nieces are mixed race and I don't want them to feel trapped between black and white, just accepted for the people they are inside, just as we all should be.

I, too, was forcibly sterilized. My experience was not in prison though. In 2016 my doc said he was going to remove a polyp but he sterilized me and lied about it.
Exactly I was told about a root canal but it was just wisdom teeth growing in. I was sterilized without my consent and the damages are horrible

This has been going on in California at least since the 1930s.
Having a hysterectomy is a serious procedure. A person should be allowed to make an informed decision about the procedure. There are serious physical & hormonal changes that take place after having the hysterectomy.
Same things happen out of prison it seems like they are just doing what they want SMH.

@mymathmind I suppose I know too many people who have been in the system. The way they treat them is awful. The system is vile, criminal, and disgusting. I’m sadly not surprised about this. I know some older leftist and right wingers that both think forced sterilization should have been in affect since the 1930’s. My grandma’s Dr tried to force her to have sterilization done, because they were poor. Why wouldn’t this happen to women whom the state “owns” in prison? No matter how disgusting it may seem, I am not surprised. Disgusted? Hell yes I am beyond disgusted.
Going against the system is close to impossible, but I’m glad this woman was able to get the resources to speak up. The government doesn’t own any woman and has no right to sterilize humans.

I have a friend whose mother felt she might get pregnant at a young age, found out much later that the reason she could not conceive was because she had been sterilized without her knowledge. Her mother had this done by a local doctor. I’m thinking this happened in early 70’s.

As a teen in 1976, I went to a planned parenthood center, pregnant and scared, and was told that I was not carry a baby, that it was not a baby yet.
I asked is this a live baby, they told me No.they are killer's and had me unknowingly participate. I cried and cried when I found out the truth 😢 😭.

The wrongful nature of the lack of response to this is criminal. Freedom as defined in modern America is the right to monetise anything you like, and to be as rapacious as you like with no interference. A civilised nation would respond by first putting systems in place giving oversight of medical procedures to concerned professionals : make sure the practice cannot continue. Only after that object has been achieved should investigations start, using records frozen from the time the crimes were first reported , going back for a given amount of time. This does not need to be hard to do, and the fact that it is so, makes clear the kind of society that has been created, inhumane and rotten to the core. A slight tweaking of a few laws won't work. The society being dysfunctional, does not mean that all the individuals that form it are as bad, I still hold hope that, allowed to be, humans can be a decent bunch.
I may not be seeing this straight, but the filmmaker calls this genocide. That would be accurate if women that hadn’t reproduced, were sterilized. Kelli, for one, had two children (good for her!). No doubt, conning these woman was underhanded, I only hope that all of the women that were sterilized had 2 babies already.
I just fixed a homeless cat that kept going in heat and flooding the neighborhood with stray cats.. So this is the human version. Should be used in more situations.
