Bonsaify | Consistency for the WIN in Shohin Development!

- Demonstrating that the key to developing healthy and interesting shohin (small) bonsai is consistent trimming and wiring, Eric revisits trees he worked on earlier this year (and one from last spring).
00:00:42 The shoots on two Chinese Elm are trimmed back to 1-2 leaves. Eric explains that repeated cutback is necessary to keep the branches in a small composition from getting too coarse or large.
00:02:04 Why Eric is not going to defoliate the elms in San Francisco at this time of year.
00:03:01 Examination of a 3rd elm on which Eric had left a branch to run. Watch as he cuts off 90% of the tree to create more distributed growth and to build more character.
00:04:14 A Washington Hawthorne trim back of new shoots to force creation of new branching.
00:04:59 Eric revisits the design of Junipers in their 3rd growing season. This includes rewiring the trunk and wiring branches. Also some shari (deadwood) work to add character and potentially create some twists.
00:07:11 Eric explains work on one of the Junipers, where he attempts to create a new bend, and then add twists and layers.
00:08:52 Another Juniper gets new wire added to create movement.
00:10:22 Make sure there aren't any straight sections.
00:11:02 Last tree is a Dwarf Jade for which the trunk size is set, and Eric wants to ensure its a shohin tree no taller than 8". This requires him to cut it down by about 50%!
Which of your young trees are you focused on developing right now? Let us know in the comments below. Thank you for watching; please like and share this video. We'd love to have you subscribe to the channel!
The dwarf Jade is looking really ancient!!!
Thanks Eric .. always very informative.. vibes from LA
Really nice 👍
Thanks.
Tried grafting the Jade?
They back bud so well, I never even considered it.
That shirt! I need one!
Foist!
What soil is your dwarf jade in? I have just started some last year, & I am getting ready to repot them in seperate pots. They have been in garden soil to this point.
Thanks in advance!

80% perlite, 20% coco coir. But I'm not 100% sure that this is the best mix for portulacaria. Still testing.
@@Bonsaify Thanks for the info! I'm trying different mixes, as I'm in the desert. Temps reach 108 in the summer, with a humidity as low as 10%.
The mix will help, but you need shade cloth in those temps - and ideally multiple layers that are retractable - e.g. 30% for a normal day, and another 50% layer for extra hot. Check out Round Valley Nursery - Ed Clark.
@@Bonsaify I have a shaded area for them. The get a little afternoon sunlight, & it's filtered through reed fencing.
I have found that some trees have to come inside during the summer (Azalais, Maples, Ficus) because of the extreme heat.
Out of curiosity, why didn’t you use your “favorite carving tool” to create the shari on the junipers?
oh, you might be surprised how disorganized I can be. I actually just couldn't find it so I grabbed that little grafting knife.
@@Bonsaify 😆…well as long as the videos continue, they are great.
I find the hardest part is consistent watering.
Volume very low
Thanks for the feedback - I noticed that while editing and brought it up, but not enough! I'll check the mic settings.

Today I saw you at the Oakland auction show, and say hi to you and you were rude and ignore me. It’s too bad that people like you and your channel instead of interact with your followers ignore them and don’t care about us. You and your channel are not worthy of following and learning things from a guy that think about him self and not about us your followers. I am unsubscribing right now from your channel and will spread the word to others to do the same
Oh No! I am so sorry. I said hi to a lot of people but I was in business mode, looking for trees to buy and helping out a couple of customers also. If you'll forgive me for that, I'd be happy to have you visit my garden since you are local, and happy to chat. Drop my an email from my website (just so I don't get spammed by things that are not people here) 🙁
Honestly just being in that room was stressful.
