Bell V-280 Valor U.S Army Strategic Helicopter 2025 | Military History |
As a tiltrotor aircraft, the V-280 is a combination of an airplane and a helicopter. Instead of having one central rotor, it has two, installed at the end of two short blades. For takeoff and landing, the blades are parallel to the ground, so that the aircraft can take off without the need for a runway and hover. Once in the air, the propellers rotate forward, similar to the way the blades of airplane propellers sit, to allow high-speed forward flight. The V-22 may have proved the concept, but also showed how complex and expensive transformers could be.
Bell simplified the V-280 with a system that rotated the propeller but kept the engine stationary. This eliminates some moving parts, avoids ground heating during takeoff and landing, and allows for a side door, something the Army favors.
