The "Self crucified..." part refers to Odin and the tales about how he torn out one of his eyes and how he made a sacrifice to himself, by hanging for nine nights on Yggdrasil - the tree of life and a centre to the cosmos in norse mythology - in return for wisdom. So "missed the right tree" and "tore the wrong eye out" means somenthing like "I sacrificed myself, my time on this earth, my sanity, etc., I endured so much pain and suffered so much, but still failed do gain wisdom. I failed to learn what this all means". Also itchy fingers in polish means to be eager to do something. "The gods are bored with peace in our hearts" so their fingers are itchy, they are eager to mingle in them, to confuse us and stray us further from the answers we seek. "As if we never broke people out of sheer boredom" personifies the higher power, the gods. It just says that those "gods" - the symbol of higher cosmic power - act like people, who sometimes hurt other for trivial reasons, like f.ex. just for fun. After that, "gods" show no remorse and do it over again, not seeing fault in their own cruelty, making us - seeking for a meaning - more and more miserable .
There's also an error in the lyrics in the video which always made me confused until I found the correct line. "As if would be someone better, spelling purgatory in latin alphabet" should actually be "As if we would be someone better, EXPELLING purgatory in latin alphabet", meaning that we think we'd be better persons if we simply forgive everyone (letting them leave Purgatory in alphabetical order) no matter if they deserved it (purged themselves of past sins) or not.
I see missed the right tree and tore the wrong eye as saying one small mistake could lead to you losing it all everything you struggled for. One slightly different, wrong step or unforseen variable at play could lead to an unwanted outcome. Another footnote in the handbook for exercises in futility.
Maybe by tearing out an eye and self crucifying one gets the opposite of infinite wisdom and becomes ultimately ignorant, thus loosing the burden of knowledge, becoming free of it, becoming happier
Best band in the newest wave of Black Metal (imo). Completely awesome and breathtaking. Darkside makes a superb work in his kit, his dexterity with the cymbals is quite unique. The band's lyrics are also a peculiar point, mixing a mature nihilism with some metaphoric narrative "backgrounded" with Greek (and others) Mythology(ies). Monolithic riffs by mister M. complete the astonishing opus of these Poles. Long Life Mgła!

Mgła (pronounced mgwah) is a Polish black metal band. Their lyrics are about the struggle with the concept of nihilism- believing that nothing has any inherent meaning. This track is from the album Exercises in Futility, which has 6 songs, numbered from 1 to 6. I would recommend giving Exercises in Futility I a listen.
@@grugoadjeschkarat4951 Or 5, yes. I suggested 1 since it has more lyrics, and conveys the band's philosophical stance better. But, yes, 5 is a good song, too, and it is the most atmospheric track on the EIF album, I think.

Your interpretation was right, the chorus refers to god Odin who gave his eye out in order to draw from well of wisdom to gain knowledge, but knowledge might bring fortune, but also can bring a destruction (i.e. atomic bomb)
It could also be a reference to the bible. "If your right eye causes you to sin tear it out." If that is the case then the song implies that punishing yourself like that is futile.
@@nicholaswalker2278 But it's about Norse mythology, not fucking Christianity. I wrote songs in a blackened folk metal band a few years ago. We seldom used rhymes, since it's easier to get a narration without sounding like a... song? It's very common for metal bands overall not to rhyme. And the drummer play the snare on the second 32nd-note instead of the first in the beat. Love that.

Please, PLEASE, do songs 1 through 5! This was such a thought provoking reaction. I loved it and I hadn't heard of the band before. The genre is close to traditional Black Metal but there are a lot of elements common to Post-Black Metal too. Post-Black Metal is a relatively new genre. I don't know how to describe it well enough, perhaps someone else can. I HIGHLY recommend exploring tracks from both Black Metal and Post-Black Metal. There are layers of cultural, religious, spiritual, historical, and sonic relevance which almost no people other than a relatively small subset of metalheads go down the path of exploring. Yet these two genres are unbelievably rich in meaning and are very underappreciated and misunderstood. You go down the Black Metal path and pay close attention, you'll find representations of the beautiful ancient darkness that lives within all of us; not as a celebration, but as a recognition. Black Metal is like peering into your own depths where it is the most stark and cold, the bitter frozen wastelands of your soul, and then coming back out with a deeper understanding of what connects us all. You will discover what is called "corpse paint", it's the black and white make-up which looks very grim and necro. It will remind you of the band Kiss but it's far more meaningful. Corpse paint is meant to worn as a representation of your own inner demon as the wearer see them self The pattern of black and white is meant to be created by the individual while truly contemplating what their darkest and most stark inner demon looks like to them, as a representation worn on the skin instead of being acted out in the world against others. Symbolically, it's a form of recognizing and bearing your own ugliness openly for all to see and as a representation of the ugliness we all carry, forcing us to see what we sometimes wish to avoid seeing. Yeah, the traditions of Black Metal run SUPER deep. Sometimes bands can get really campy or take themselves too seriously, but there is a lot of meaning and truth in the best examples. It is very dark lyrically and thematically, and the music is meant to sound stark, cold, bitter, empty. It's made this way intentionally in order to create these feelings. I would really love and appreciate Black Metal being explored by others who might be the least likely to discover or explore the genre. A lot of good for the world would come of it.
Just stumbled across your channel you guys are awesome. Very respectfully to the genre been a metal head. You guys pretty much nailed it and been listening to this genre for 17 years (also a huge rap fan) hope you guys took the time to listen to the whole album 🤘
Some black metal bands dont name there songs . They just name the album then just numbers for the tracks . In this case the album name is Exercises in Futility , and there is 6 tracks. So thats the last track
I like that you point out how the lyrics don't often rhyme. That's pretty common in metal, and in my opinion, I think rhyming lyrics make harsh vocals sound odd. Rhyming also tends to make phrases more catchy which is not something that nihilistic black metal is concerned with.
A very interesting band indeed! Their whole discography is great. If you want to try more black metal, definitely check out all the songs from the album "Exercises in Futility"
You got it right, during sound check Mgla doesn't bother covering their faces but during the performance they do it because its about the music they make not them
The album is called Exercises in Futility and all the songs are called Exercises in Futility. All their songs are named the same as the album they are on.
I saw Mgla and hit play and subscribed 🤘 Great reaction guy's, I like the way you try to breakdown the lyrics, can't wait to see you react to more metal. Stay cool be happy and be safe guy's 👍 Cheers from Denmark Scandinavia 🤘
When you say that the drums aren't on beat with the guitars - they are, the drummer is just playing blast beats, where the snare doesn't fall on the "conventional" beat. I'm not a drummer so there's probably someone else who can explain more into detail...
yo what the hell, you guys did mgla? That's unexpected but very nice. Their last album Age of Excuse which came out last year was easily one of the top 5 albums of the year for me.
You should also check out their drum-cam video for Exercises in Futility. Mgła has one of the best drummers in the world and it's hard to appreciate it without seeing it yourself.
I would love to see what you dudes think of Propagandhi. Very political, very lyrical, very technical. You can't go wrong with "With Friends Like These, Who Needs Cointel Pro?", "Dear Coach's Corner", or "Speculative Fiction"... or "Fuck The Border".
The "Wrong eye, missed tree" is a norse mythology reference in which Odin impales himself on a tree and tears out his eye to gain the knowledge of the runes. in way the song has this idea that they went for knowledge and gained nothing possibly losing much.
man midnight would be kickass for you guys to check out kind of a mix of black metal, punk, and classic heavy metal. rebirth through blasphemy is a killer track.
They're Polish so I don't know what the letter is called in their language but it's not an l or a t but all together they say their name like Mgwah. Kinda like a mogwai from gremlins but without the O and with an AH instead of an I. But I believe it means fog or the fog or foggy. Something like that I think. I don't know exactly I don't speak Polish. But if you're looking into black metal you have got to give a listen to Cradle of Filth. They are the go to band for black metal they became the biggest or at least most well known in the genre. I suggest their most famous song to start with "Her Ghost in the Fog" then my favorite "A Thousand Hands on the Maid of Ruin" which is an instrumental.
The out-of-joint drumming of Mgla comes from Darkside doing melodic fills, mainly on cymbals. Playing melodies on drums isn't *that* new, but Darkside's way of playing rhytm parts with his feet at the same time is what really sets him apart!
the drumer belongs in your best drummer lineup. Watch their Darkside Mgla - Exercises in Futility V drum can and be amazed. Side note, i believe the band is Polish originally.
chose the wrong tree refers to odin hanging himself in his quest to gain knowledge, it basically means making wrong choices, that end up making everything futile. the band's name is pronounced megwa. they are from poland . megwa in polish means mist or fog. they can't be seen. so they perform in hoodies with their faces covered. to remain the focus on the music and the lyrics. it's an amazing live band. live this song sounds way more emotional.. especially at the end. the music genre is black metal. every album has the album title and songs called 'album title' 1 to x. they are all a concept and a story being told .
Exercises in Futility - the entire album, is a deep dive into nihilism. Nothing matters, there's no plan, there's no hidden meaning, no pattern to find. In this song, they're almost mocking the human intellect for trying to find meaning where there's clearly none to be found. "As if we..." Is an analogism to "Like we actually believe these superstitions we come up with - we know they're bullshit".
The lyrics "self crucified" is referencing self sacrifice, because the following lyrics "picked the wrong tree, tore the wrong eye out" is referencing Odin the Norse god hanging himself on Yggdrasil (tree of life) to obtain knowledge and he sacrificed his eye to see everything. The lyrics are an inversion of what Odin did, as in the subject of the lyrics did everything wrong when compared to Odin and either obtained no knowledge or the knowledge they did obtain shows that they might as well be in hell. Rather than finding enlightenment they found despair instead. This band's lyrics are rooted in nihilism and misanthropy. Exercises In Futility V, I think is one of their best songs and I suggest you listen to that as well.
Hey guys! Great reactions every time!😍 I would love to see your reaction to the song "The Violation" (official music video) from the band Fleshgod Apocalypse - or "Amongst Stars" from Amorphis. Stay safe! Greetings from Germany. 🤘

This is my fav song ever and I can explain things you misunderstood, like the wrong tree, wrong eye, etc stuff
Alter Bridge - Blackbird live at Wembley
Jerry Mezzina, I have been meaning to request Alter Bridge - Blackbird for a while. You have good ideas 😎. Peace🙃
So glad I watched this. True musicians can recognize good music regardless of the genre. Good video guys.
Black Metal is, in some ways, what we know, what we fear and yet denied.
Some black metal bands dont name there songs . They just name the album then just numbers for the tracks . In this case the album name is Exercises in Futility , and there is 6 tracks. So thats the last track
They came out of nowhere and took over the scene.
You got it right, during sound check Mgla doesn't bother covering their faces but during the performance they do it because its about the music they make not them
Thank you very much for reacting to Mgla!!!
The album is called Exercises in Futility and all the songs are called Exercises in Futility. All their songs are named the same as the album they are on.
"it takes the focus off the band and puts the focus on the music" that's why they do it. I listen to mgla when I feel super depressed, it helps.
It's like Fog
PLEASE, react to OM -STATE OF NON-RETURN
I saw Mgla and hit play and subscribed 🤘 Great reaction guy's, I like the way you try to breakdown the lyrics, can't wait to see you react to more metal. Stay cool be happy and be safe guy's 👍 Cheers from Denmark Scandinavia 🤘
Black Metal
When you say that the drums aren't on beat with the guitars - they are, the drummer is just playing blast beats, where the snare doesn't fall on the "conventional" beat. I'm not a drummer so there's probably someone else who can explain more into detail...
yo what the hell, you guys did mgla? That's unexpected but very nice. Their last album Age of Excuse which came out last year was easily one of the top 5 albums of the year for me.
Damn I never heard this band before. Not to bad guys. Keep it up.
“The great truth is, there isn’t one. And it only gets worse since that conclusion.” Mgla in a nutshell.
You should also check out their drum-cam video for Exercises in Futility. Mgła has one of the best drummers in the world and it's hard to appreciate it without seeing it yourself.
Great review!! I love Mgla...thanks guys!
Thank you for doing this!
I would love to see what you dudes think of Propagandhi. Very political, very lyrical, very technical. You can't go wrong with "With Friends Like These, Who Needs Cointel Pro?", "Dear Coach's Corner", or "Speculative Fiction"... or "Fuck The Border".
You're totally right about why they cover their faces. The band stated that they want people to focus on the music and not on the musicians themselves
The lyrics are absolutely fuckin fantastic
The out-of-joint drumming of Mgla comes from Darkside doing melodic fills, mainly on cymbals. Playing melodies on drums isn't *that* new, but Darkside's way of playing rhytm parts with his feet at the same time is what really sets him apart!
You should react to one of their drum cam videos - their drummer is INSANE!
the drumer belongs in your best drummer lineup. Watch their Darkside Mgla - Exercises in Futility V drum can and be amazed.
Side note, i believe the band is Polish originally.
I am surprised to see this as a reaction. Love this band.
Check out Gorgoroth (God Seed) - Prosperity and Beauty - Live at Wacken 2008
chose the wrong tree refers to odin hanging himself in his quest to gain knowledge, it basically means making wrong choices, that end up making everything futile. the band's name is pronounced megwa. they are from poland . megwa in polish means mist or fog. they can't be seen. so they perform in hoodies with their faces covered. to remain the focus on the music and the lyrics. it's an amazing live band. live this song sounds way more emotional.. especially at the end. the music genre is black metal. every album has the album title and songs called 'album title' 1 to x. they are all a concept and a story being told .
Mgwa is like an art project in eastern european nihilism.
This album restored my interest in black metal.
Poland. Mgla is from Poland.
Here’s the live video of their song previous: Exercises in Futility V
th-cam.com/video/wcsTJ1n2jkE/w-d-xo.html
Basically Mgła means the fog. And "ł" is the letter which appears only in polish language. Mgła is the best Polish black metal ever.
Exercises in Futility - the entire album, is a deep dive into nihilism. Nothing matters, there's no plan, there's no hidden meaning, no pattern to find. In this song, they're almost mocking the human intellect for trying to find meaning where there's clearly none to be found. "As if we..." Is an analogism to "Like we actually believe these superstitions we come up with - we know they're bullshit".
even rappers lova mgła, how awesome:) cheers from Poland guys:)
I interpret the “self crucify” line as either Judas committing $u1çidë after Jesus’ betrayal or just committing the act on himself.
Guys you have got to see Exercises in Futility V live drum cam version. You will thank me later
Love this
The lyrics "self crucified" is referencing self sacrifice, because the following lyrics "picked the wrong tree, tore the wrong eye out" is referencing Odin the Norse god hanging himself on Yggdrasil (tree of life) to obtain knowledge and he sacrificed his eye to see everything.
Rappers reacting to Metal. Love it! 🔥😁🤘🏻
Most people translate the band’s name as „fog” but IMO „mist” provides us with better message of the meaning...
If you want real speed on drums you should check out "der weg einer Freiheit" it's a German band with a drumer in absolute beast mode!
Hoooo man the best great band ever...you got good taste
Bartzabel by Behemoth please
"...the drummer is a different tempo...but it works..."
ahahahahahahaha
This is funny to watch but awesome to see the open minds guys
Please react to Mgla drum cam. The drummers name is Maciej Kowalski
And he is called the king og symbals
MGLA - With Hearts Toward None VII would make an awesome reaction.
Hey guys! Great reactions every time!😍 I would love to see your reaction to the song "The Violation" (official music video) from the band Fleshgod Apocalypse - or "Amongst Stars" from Amorphis. Stay safe! Greetings from Germany. 🤘
Still waiting on that greyhaven reaction!
great to watch love seeing your faces change and such lol
