Right on! So did Stevie and Curtis. Motown and The Funk Brothers brought so much to the table back in the day, along with The Wrecking Crew in LA and The Swampers in Muscle Shoals. Greatness that lasts…
What an incredible performance. Perfect pitch singing, all live, no modern autotune, overdubs, prerecorded backing tracks. Just straight up live talent.
talk about in your element! The man was in the zone, pocket... vibing with the cosmos... what a cool, jazzy and still applicable message! Yeah Mr. Gaye, we salute you!
I heard other musicians at Motown say they didn't think Marvin played the drums that well. LOL That's okay. He was so good at so many other things. His piano playing sounded good to me.
The words in this song from 1972 are totally relevant today in 2024. This song ranks in the top 5 of most important songs Berry Gordy did not want to record this song because he thought it was too controversial . Marvin persisted and it remains the classic that it is today. About a year ago CNN actually did a special on the significance of this song. Thanks for your great reaction to this. 👏👏🥰
Unparalleled musical greatness and I cried when he died. He was back on top churning out some incredible vibes and then he was gone. I know how but don’t like thinking about it. Who was better at baby making music? Probably no one.
Gentlemen ... rare air with brother Marvin--never seen ANY live versions--thank you. Words fail. Che: wrap your words around the chord changes on What's Goin' On--that kind of swirling, circular, uplifting sequence more at the end. Stop making us wait for it. Go to Inner City Blues NEXT ... THAT bassline. The tension of the whole composition. Exquisite. Keep goin guys ...
What an incredible talent and album. Love this live version!🎶Marvin Gaye was such a beautiful man both inside and out. His thoughtful, loving messages are just as relevant today as they have ever been. Thanks so much guys for reacting again to this lovely artist! RIP Marvin❤
What more can be said? A perfect performance by Marvin at the top of his game. Jamerson is just on another level. The congas…dayum. The whole band is on point. The song is maybe more relevant today than it was when he performed it back then. That’s sad tho. Thank you.
@@adams565 I think other musicians knew about James Jamerson for a long time. Thankfully, recent documentaries have informed the rest of us so that we started paying more attention to his contribution to Motown hits.
I always go back to this live version of this song it's so intense you can literally feel the pain in his voice .. it's so genuine. I love watching this video
One of the few times that you get to see the artist at his peak perform a song from when it was released with an extra gift of seeing legendary bass master James Jamerson. All that beautiful playing with a single finger and a magic ability. That has to be some of the Motown Funk Brothers up there too. Wow-Weeeeeee
this performance is epic, transcendent. Marvin in his prime, full fledged Funk Brothers, and Jamerson in full flight - not many videos showing the bass king in action. The imagery is a lesson in the American urban experience, much of which remains today
I’d just like to wish AirPlay Beats and all who enjoy the show, a Stupendously Happy Christmas and a Funkin’ Good New Year. Peace and love to all. 💚😁⭐️
Such a great song guys! Glad you did a live version. Love the improv on the vocal lines by Marvin. The one consistency is James Jamerson with possibly the best bass line in any song, ever.
Should be monuments to him everywhere. Grew up on this song, we had some high expectations, never thought things would be like this all these years later. Wonder what Mr. Gaye would think.
Thank you so much for doing this! I knew you'd love it. It's like an early birthday gift (It's tomorrow! 69 years old.) for me to see you both enjoy this unique and truly beautiful footage of a great man at his best. Not to mention the extraordinary James Jamerson who needs to be praised and his name kept alive as the greatest bassist of all time. I vividly remember when I bought this album when it first came out, put it on my turntable, and listened to the entire record...mesmerized.
There are volumes of meaning in this song. And Marvin's performance is so natural and open. Great reaction, guys! Thanks for sharing your insights with us.
I finally hear someone appreciate the master doing his best work at the absolute top of his game. I would rather have seen him at this concert than anything else at any other time. And the Funk Brothers to go with it? I could leave this 🌎 contented at that point. God is good
As a 60-year-old white boy what's going on is the greatest album made in my lifetime not one bad song on it every single song was in the right place and on point
Sooooooo smooth, sooooo much soul! That "silky" voice! None like him or ever will be. Saw him live on many occasions. He gave his all and would switch it up. Every performance a different and awesome experience!!!
ICONIC song by the great Marvin Gaye ❤ I was living in California when his dad shot him. When it came on the news, I cried 😭 Love Marvin, no one like him!! Such a soulful voice. RIP my man🌹🥀 So classy. He brought Motown into a new era of music✌🏼
That whole situation was more complicated than people imagine. Marvin was depressed and suicidal. It wasn't only about his father. I am happy that Marvin seems to be appreciated even now as a legendary talent and person with all his human frailties like the rest of us.
I’ve been totally enamored with Marvin Gaye since grade school! And yes….the hope of love conquering hate still exists in this old white lady’s heart! 😽🎶
This was so good! Marvin in top form, relaxed, happy, and showing just what a musical genius he was. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. Thanks La and Che.
A terribly underrated Marvin Gaye song is called, When Did You Stop Loving Me, When Did I Stop Loving You? 6 minutes of the most joyful heartbreak ever recorded.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded. There is a version of Marvin Gaye’s original cut of this song called the “Chicago” version; the slight re-production adds an echo effect that just expands the sound; it is ear bliss ❤
The beauty and power of this song is shown by it being loved across music fans -- I favor the Beatles, progressive rock and hard rock, yet this is near the top of my favorite songs (the album version is so well-produced).
RIP to a sweet, gentle soul. Vocal perfection-an absolute virtuoso. I wish I could have seen him. If you haven’t heard his Star Spangled Banner at the NBA all-star game, do yourself a favor and check it out.
James Jamerson is the king of bass players.
Marvins music brought the white kids and black kids in high school together back in the early 70s
Right on! So did Stevie and Curtis. Motown and The Funk Brothers brought so much to the table back in the day, along with The Wrecking Crew in LA and The Swampers in Muscle Shoals. Greatness that lasts…
A rare look at the great Motown Bass Player James Jamerson doing his thing! Work that Claw James.
Man, look at Jamerson layin’ it down. This whole thing 🤯🤯🤯
Thank GOD for great music. Growing up in the time music made you move.
What an incredible performance. Perfect pitch singing, all live, no modern autotune, overdubs, prerecorded backing tracks. Just straight up live talent.
..and only a single clam: the horn note at 4:34 😬(then sheepishly low-vol for the rest of the phrase 🤣)
Another American Legend.
... that incredible bass line tho....
That rare moment when an artist is in a state of grace.....
He captured our hearts, souls, exposed our damages and then told us how to heal! MG your message, vibe and groove will live forever!
“War is not the answer for only love can conquer hate “
- Marvin Gaye
Yes, he's at peak power here. Perfection.
talk about in your element! The man was in the zone, pocket... vibing with the cosmos... what a cool, jazzy and still applicable message! Yeah Mr. Gaye, we salute you!
Nothing is cooler than Marvin.
I had a ticket to see him in late 1983 or early 1984, I gave my ticket to my older brother. Months later Marvin was tragically killed.
Marvin on the piano! Drums were his main instrument, but like many back in the day, he was a multi- instrumentalist.
I heard other musicians at Motown say they didn't think Marvin played the drums that well. LOL That's okay. He was so good at so many other things. His piano playing sounded good to me.

I've often said Marvin''s voice is what I imagine God's voice would sound like if we could imagine Him singing.
Marvin was the GOAT!! I grew up on his awesome music!!❤ ❤❤❤
Oh my goodness, the bass! Damn. Gorgeous.
That beautiful voice. R.I.P. Marvin
This video really showcases his talent. What a beautiful man! Such a rip-off to lose him when and how we did. 💙💙✌️
This is amazing. Marvin’s smooth voice against Jamerson’s jazzy bass line is sublime.
Loved this era in music and he sang with such feeling
On my Top 20 list of greatest songs ever written.
Gentlemen ... rare air with brother Marvin--never seen ANY live versions--thank you. Words fail. Che: wrap your words around the chord changes on What's Goin' On--that kind of swirling, circular, uplifting sequence more at the end.

It's wasn't often that the Funk Brothers got that kind of attention. Marvin was so generous to put them right upfront to be appreciated.
So glad to see Jameson get the shout out. He gets his flowers but never enough.

Marvin: A man for all times.
So jazzy! So damn good!
what an exquisite man and performance - such an honest emotional, performance that gives you tingles.
Marvin sounded great, and James Jamerson hanging out right over his shoulder... Awesome. 🖤
OMG you guys....my heart. He was love all the way. God bless thank you for giving us Marvin
Jamerson, kicking it back there......
Right at Marvin's side. I love that! He's also looking sharp in that suit.
I would have sold my soul to have been able to see him live. My favorite artist of all time.
Hi La and Che … I was lucky to see Marvin in 1974 at the Nassau coliseum in Long Island..I think the Ohio players was the opening act….

All that beautiful playing with a single finger and a magic ability. That has to be some of the Motown Funk Brothers up there too. Wow-Weeeeeee
I'm flashing back to the late 60's early 70's, crazy time's. His voice is magic.
So powerful, so healing.
Taken from us too soon. I remember I was in college when he died. What a beautiful man. His music will live on into eternity.
this performance is epic, transcendent. Marvin in his prime, full fledged Funk Brothers, and Jamerson in full flight - not many videos showing the bass king in action. The imagery is a lesson in the American urban experience, much of which remains today
So well said.
Damn that was emotional

Great song and an even greater message. Thanks for the excellent reaction fellas! Appreciate it 🙏 ❤
Marvin was unbelievable!! I was 12 in 1972. I grew up listening to his music. He was so unique. RIP MARVIN GAYE❤
Such a great song guys! Glad you did a live version. Love the improv on the vocal lines by Marvin. The one consistency is James Jamerson with possibly the best bass line in any song, ever.
Loooove Marvin. Probably my favorite singer ever. Gone too soon. But he sure did leave us with some beautiful, profound music ❤
Can't go wrong with live Marvin Gaye.... beautiful performance
Marvin. What a voice. He had all the gifts.
Love the early stuff
This song could have been written today, it’s still so relatable. Marvin was a goat to the music industry 🙌🏻✌🏻🎯
Incomparable. This is so good, it’s bringing tears to my eyes.
Should be monuments to him everywhere. Grew up on this song, we had some high expectations, never thought things would be like this all these years later. Wonder what Mr. Gaye would think.
"What's Goin On" is Marvin Gaye's monument, one that you can access any time that you want...

Such a respectful crowd, letting the Marvin and his group perform without interference or interjections.
🎶 Do it to me one more time🎶 Mom born 1925 liked Marvin 🙏
Jamerson and Gaye live .. masters of their instruments (Marvin always used his voice as an instrument).
Marvin said he wanted to be a jazz singer but Berry talked him out of it. Berry wanted him to be a heartthrob...which he was.
This is an excellent performance
It never gets old
I love this live version so much. Gives me chills. Thanks for reacting to this ❤
The great James Jamerson on bass behind Marvin! What a fabulous performance by the whole band! Marvin was a giant!
Sooooooo smooth, sooooo much soul! That "silky" voice! None like him or ever will be. Saw him live on many occasions. He gave his all and would switch it up. Every performance a different and awesome experience!!!

Marvin had an amazing talent and is such an amazing part of musical history! This song is central in the American musical scene.
Simply one of the great albums crossed all races the mans voice was exemplary and this album ground breaking
He was always so smooth, I never saw him play the piano before, he was Motown at it's best. Will always be a fan
