At the height of my skiing career I had been a full time ski patroller on one of the largest mountains in the American west. One morning I got to tuck the entire 3,000 vertical feet which took 3 minutes. My thighs were on fire at the end. Bode does the same thing on a single ski and makes it look like he is taking a scenic ride! That is pure iron. Granted, skiing upright is easier on the thighs, but at this speed and time, he is still incredible.
@@btbtm5189 The real question is why wouldn't you respond to a comment that is 5 years old. If a comment needs correction, it should be corrected, no matter how long ago the comment was posted.
It's 16 years ago and I still remember that moment. Also when he slided with both skies on the cushion at the Lauberhorn speed race was spectacular. He was always a sensation to watch and only injuries could slow him down.
Hello Bode Miller For me you are the best skier of all time. Thank you for the wonderful sport you showed us! I wish you all the best! With alpine greetings Raphael Wellig
People who can ski decently will understand how hard it is to keep balance with your right ski on a right turn. And he did it at around 70 km/h with bumps and jumps.
that is some frigging INSANE balance and leg strength. We used to do "one leg" training when I raised downhill as a kid, and it was pretty tough. I remember being able to do it for awhile (like half as long as Bode did here), but no where near this speed, on a course like this. If you haven't tried to ski on one leg, you have no idea how tough this is, and how easy he just made it look. I'll give a comparison for those who haven't skied before: If you were in a car race with a lot of turns and a lot of accelerating / decelerating, and they put the shifter (manual transmission) on the left side (rather than in the middle console), and they put the gas pedal where the brake pedal is at - that may be a similar comparison.
just stumbled onto this video. I can't agree more with your statements. Our kids race and their coaches have them do single ski drills (often on their less dominant leg) and it's REALLY hard! Bode is just amazing! I wonder if he would have actually crossed the finish line if he hadn't fallen. I'm sure FIS rules disqualified him once he lost the other ski. Amazing skills and strength!
And what makes it even more crazy is that Bode did that with an average speed of 80 km/h on the Stelvio - one of the hardest slopes in alpine downhill That guy is a gifted genius when it comes to skiing. Hats off to him
Last time I've been on the San Pietro, day after the downhill race in Bormio, many took off their skis and walked down. 55% slope prepared for the race is probably the hardest surface I've ever skied, and not so smooth either. I was proud of taking the drop without slowing down too much, but man, the vibrations on the skis! This man drew a straight line down the slope with a single ski like it was nothing. Nothing. And he wasn't going precisely slow on that one ski, probably faster than most tourists. The amount of balance and control required... Absolute legend!
I remember this it was one of the greatest showings of talent in sports history. Watch some vids of downhill crashes to see what he avoided if you dont know.
He’s skiing smoother and more relaxed on one ski than any regular guy on two (and faster!) and he looks like he could be smoking a cigar and drinking a gin&tonic easily. Those are some skills backed up with serious training. Hats off.
This is relatively easy on a flat pitch... Somewhat harder even on a steep straight hill. Much more difficult to do on a steep hill with big curves, dips and turns. To do this at that speed through a gated course impressed me. I've been skiing since I was a toddler and competitive raced from age 12 until 19, I'm 42 now. People below saying this is easy, well they must be world cup skiers then ;).
Every ski racer should learn how to do this. It's unbelievable practice. Especially newer racers that are tempted to rely on their outside edge as opposed to their inside. Temptation is weight distribution (70-80% outside and 20-30% inside) but sometimes you will never get the sensation of appreciating your inside edge than when you ski on one ski. NOTE: It's incredibly difficult. I snapped by back binding in two after it smashed into a GS gate during training, I thought i was done fo the day because that ski was useless. My coach took off one of his skis and said, "our training is far from over today". One of the most difficult and best days of training ever. With courses being covered in ruts or being a sheet of ice, it's important that both edges are planted firmly and weight distribution should be about 60-40 (favor of outside edge). What a difference, I compare to a much more dangerous version of putting weights on a baseball bat while warming up.
