  • New Zealand music month is here! This month, I’m going to post some covers from my favourite New Zealand artists to celebrate, and give a little bit of backstory on the song I’ve chosen to cover.
First up I’ve gone with a classic, Victoria by Dance Exponents. Victoria is the debut single released in 1982 by Dance Exponents, later The Exponents, who formed in Christchurch in 1981. The band at the time was made up by Jordan Luck (songwriter, vocals, guitar), Brian Jones (guitar), Steve Cowan (keyboards, guitar), David Gent (bass) and Michael Harallambi (drums), however Steve Cowan ended up leaving the band after the release of Victoria. The song reached #6 on the NZ music charts and ended up being selected by a panel of NZ songwriters as the #8 top 100 NZ songs of all time.
This was a really fun song to figure out, after listening to it so many times on the radio growing up. Even though it’s probably not the one most people think of when they think (Dance) Exponents, it’s still a very iconic song and important to the history of New Zealand music!
