Sea Day | Gulf of St Lawrence River Cruising on HAL Volendam!

- Welcome back to Mer Cruises Solo! Today is a sea day! Well, sort of - it's a sea day advertised as cruising through the St. Lawrence River, but I don't really see much land during the day. It's also Canada Day! The ship celebrated in several ways, including a beautiful cake and cupcake decorations that I happened to capture at the Lido Market. We also had to slow wayyyy down mid-morning and crawl along at a very slow speed because we were cruising through a whale breeding ground, so we chugged along at a glacier pace for most of the day while I enjoyed myself around the ship. Despite it being a sea day, there was a lot going on - but if you know me, it is a difficult task to tear me away from whatever book I'm currently reading :D
The weather was absolutely beautiful so I started my day with a quick run in the gym, then decided to get brunch - something that not all cruise lines offer! I signed up for a wine tasting in the afternoon, which was a nice experience, and then lost track of time reading and enjoying the nice weather. Dinner was delicious as always, and I got to soak in an absolutely PERFECT sunset at the end of the day while finally experiencing the much loved Crow's Nest observation lounge, which I absolutely adored. Such a great spot on this little ship!
And that wraps up my one and only sea day on this 7-day Canada & New England cruise from Montreal to Boston. Stay tuned for tomorrow as we dock in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and it also happens to be the infamous Holland America Orange Party! I've signed up for the Bar Hop which I hear is always a fun time, so definitely check out the next episode in this playlist to see how much fun we have!!

Waiting impatiently for the rest of this ship
The small HAL ships have a really good Crows Nest.
I the spring we cruised HA for the first time. It was also our first TA. We loved it. We found the cruisers to be so friendly, talkative and polite. Loved the bread and fish dishes.
love to hear that! I completely agree on the bread, it was some of the best I've ever had on any cruise! 😋
What a beautiful sunset at sea !! It is something I’d not miss on all my cruises. I love the relaxing ambience of this small ship❤
Totally agree, catching the sunset on each cruise is a must for me! 😊
Great video! Thanks for sharing :)
Great narration. Love your voice and positivity while giving great information!
@@martharose2318 thank you so much Martha! 😊
That sunset was so gorgeous🥹 Thank you for your uplifting content, Meredith 🧡
@@Catherine.B. thanks so much, Catherine! Appreciate you! 😊
Another great video from another great itinerary. You’re sailing my home and native land…never been to eastern Canada though… my holidays have always been international. At 60, it’s time I change that! Definitely planning to do a Canada/New England in the near future! Giving me lots of inspiration!
Love to hear that! I haven't yet visited western Canada, but it looks beautiful - can't wait to see that part of your country! ☺
I think it's cute and funny and appropriate that "Mer" means "sea" in French. You've probably been told that countless times already, but I thought it worth repeating.
Google translate tells me that "a sea day" in French is "une journée en mer."
This is the third video I've seen from your channel, and I'm enjoying them all.
@@grumpy_older_man thank you so much! I love that - and my full name (Meredith) is Welsh in origin and means “protector of the sea” which I also think couldn’t be more fitting! 😄
Another fun update on your HAL cruise. I think you'll enjoy quaint little towns ahead. Very different than the big cities the last few days. (And who doesn't enjoy a relaxing sea day and a good book?) Carry on!! :)
couldn't agree more! 😄
Hubby and I did this cruise June 22nd to 29th. It was our first cruise and we had a wonderful time.
@@amandaregis313 so glad to hear that! I really enjoyed it! 😊
Such an amazing view from your cabin port hole on deck 1 because you're so close to the water line! Beautiful small ship, doesn't seem crowded anywhere! Another great vlog, Meredith 😁
Thanks, Ben! No crowds at all and it was so cool to be so close to the water line, first time getting to experience that and I would definitely do it again! 😀
Looked like a relaxing day on the ship. The sunset looked amazing! I am looking forward to seeing what the Orange party is all about.
@@NowBoardingVlogs it’s gonna be such a good one! 😄
Waiting to see the next video
@@trikynguyen3680 coming this week! 😊
@MerCruisesSolo ,thank you, my husband keeps on asking me when there's next video 😊
Great video and beautiful sunset Meredith. 🙂👍
@@johnbuckley8324 thanks John!
Hey Mer, well I think you might know what I think of your Solo cruise videos.. always enjoyable. Thank you for sharing
@@northwestman1 thanks as always for watching! 😊
What a beautiful sunset, it's just spectacular. I can see myself enjoying the crow's nest as well. Also, that Halibut Sandwich looked delicious. Can't wait to see what the Orange Party has in store for you. Happy cruising
@@KikiB90 thanks so much! 😊
I live on the St. Lawrence River but way upriver in the 1000 Island region. It’s one of the prettiest places on earth. Enjoy your trip.
@@pamelajudson2302 thanks! The whole area is so beautiful up there! Can’t wait to go back and see more of it 😊
I love the Crows Nest to do puzzles and read. Today I booked Quebec City to Boston on HAL for next May. It will be my first solo cruise. Could you address sometime how it feels to eat solo in the dining room? That’s my biggest worry.
I always bring a book (usually my Kindle) with me to dinner so I'm not just staring aimlessly around me while I eat 😆 but I don't find dining solo to be uncomfortable or awkward at all! I focus on enjoying my meal, my book, and occasional chat with my server - years ago I used to think people were staring at me, but I no longer notice or it doesn't happen as often as I used to think it did. Just enjoy yourself! ☺
@@MerCruisesSolo When using the Main Dining Room (anytime dining) you will be asked if you would like to share. Don't be afraid to say yes, as those you will be seated with also made that choice. A low pressure way to met others.
The food looks so delicious
@@MathewLauren it really was!
Thanks Meredith for another nice video on the Volendam. Is the brunch only on sea day? On our 10 day Montreal to Boston trip at the end of this month we have only 1 sea day.
@@norberteng9496 I only saw it on the schedule on the sea day! But I didn’t look too closely on some of the other port days. They may offer it if you arrive later to port. Thanks for watching!
not to be tacky and correct you but you already left Quebec and now you are cruises the gulf of St Lawrence.. I have been on this cruise4 times with HAL Love the smaller ships..
@@RJBOU1224 thank you, I updated the title of the video, the way HAL laid out the itinerary made it very confusing!
Sorry….first day out of Montreal as you show circled, and you are on the port side from the direction shown….you would see the river bank all day…and one of the most beautiful parts of it. The ship position you show is NOT where you’d be the first day…..way too far out in the gulf. Sorry…you’ve lost credibility with me on this one!
@@pennyhebert5436 sorry to say you are wrong! That screenshot was taken at 11:15am on our 3rd day (sea day) and we had just come from Quebec City… Montreal was 2 days prior. So yes, it is accurate.
@@MerCruisesSolo my point though is the day you circled on the itinerary - the one you were talking about - wasn’t that day that the screenshot showed.
@@MerCruisesSoloI was enjoying your HAL cruise I hope the rest are coming up soon!
@@Alice-j8x2l hoping to have the next video out tomorrow or Thursday! :)
