Just picked up a Maxx. It is such a fun truck to drive. Will be watching your wide max install vid again if I attempt it. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
Hey Mathew, You have put a cracking video together here dude, but now you have cost me a fist full of money man ! Let me explain in detail ...... I have been into RC for 42 years now, Yes I’m old school at 51 years old but i still love the hobby to the MAXX ....... mmmmmm well yes I ordered that too the Traxxas Maxx !!! But hey why stop there, I also ordered the Bluetooth module, lighting kit & wide Maxx kit. So that is all now on route, i am so lucky to have such a understanding wife. My collection of RC cars consist of the Traxxas X-Maxx 8s, & the older 6s model..... Arrma Mojave EXB .....GMade Komodo,GS02 ...... Traxxas TRX-4 Sport ...... Traxxas Slash 4x4 ultimate ....... HPi Baja petrol 1/5th buggy with a host of billet alloy extras....... & a trio of Tamiya recent releases which are still awaiting the build. That’s where it all started for me with Tamiya ! How RC has developed since the late 70s Anyway back to today, thank you again you again for your comparison video & keep up the great work my friend & most of all ....Stay Safe ! P.S. You owe me £800 Ha Ha
Hey Shaun! Sounds like you have a nice collection 😀 my apologies for costing you money 🤣 I do it to myself too haha. Like you I started out at 9 years old, I got into racing, stopped has a teenager, now I'm 25 and getting back into it over the last couple of years. Thanks for watching dude, appreciate it 😀
At 50, my first was a Tamiya frog. I have a collection also, have you found anything that is better than the Mojave 4s? It is my favorite by far because it always does exactly what I ask of it.
Got back into rc a few years ago at 48 and love love love this hobby again.. when I was a kid I had lots of Tamiya’s I have the big rock.. love this truck!!!!
It's a beast dude! I think the gear stripped because I could have possibly not put the latch on properly so the motor module came lose, but I'm not 100% I'm going to fix it and try again 😀
@@MatthewSimm yeah I think I will agree with you 🔥🙏It will be a great car! Hey mate! I had to order a two pack of green arms, unfortunately I had to buy from Amazon (America) as I couldn't find any here 🤔 and I'm in Victoria 😀
Great vid dude. Not sure it's a fair comparison with the size and price difference. Both great trucks but not true competitor's IMO. In NZ the BR is $730 the Maxx $1200.
You would have to assume that a $500 rc just might be built a little better than a $300 one. How about a $500 arrma vs a $500 traxxas. Why was the motor changed in the arrma?
The motor was changed because the stock one blew up, I changed it to be the same performance as stock. I'll definitely do more comparisons, this was just a bit of fun. Imo, I think it showed you can get a really good rc car and don't have to spend 500
thanks for this great video bro! gave me a good idea of how much abuse the big rock can take since I ordered one yesterday 👍🏽 i’m glad it’s just a factory gear problem and nothing major broke. what would cause the gear to slip out? the hard landings?
Awww yer been waiting for this that was seriously a great head to head things I didn't know the Maxx had didn't realise how much bigger it is vids like that help decide if a choice is worth the extra money well done keep these up 👊👍💯
Which motor brand is in the big rock Matthew? When mine went bad I was given a blx same spec motor. I never speed tested it so idk if it's slower or not, but it seems the stock motor was pretty strong.
@@MatthewSimm the bearings went bad in my spektrum motor on the, I believe third run. I've now had trouble with the steering components. So it's on the shelf.
I think the Maxx is much better! You are very lucky to have access to an empty skate park and the bush. Most skate parks near me are always crowded. Thanks again Matthew, great video!
Right, about to say get there at dawn and you should have it to yourself for at least an hr. Cold just finished raining is also a good time to check them out.
My Full Throttle stickers arrived yesterday Thanks........ I put one on my rc car and I swear it added 20kph to its top end speed....then again it could of been the new lipo?
Nice video. Two great RC's. But it $300 v $550 due to the Maxx wide kit. So for an extra $50 get two big rocks and have a complete set of spares or give one to your best mate and go bash...
I only went wide-kit because I put much bigger tires on my maxx and while it cost quite a bit more it is also quite a bit bigger and 4s rather than 3s. I have a maxx, summit 1/16, ford mustang and ford gt vxl 4-tec 2.0's and feel as if traxxas has a better medium-small scale selection while arma has the better large scale selection otherwise you can't go wrong with either brand.
The Max 4s is pretty durable. I had one. But sold it since I'm into mostly Giant RC vehicles. Even though I have a Granite V3 BLX and a Kaiju as well. Thanks for the video! You did add the widemaxx kit and I also added that plus the steel drive shafts. That made my max reach almost $800! I'm going to be honest and say that I felt it was too much money for such a small truck. I even had to buy a max 8 esc because the stock ESC burned out on me. So yeah. I did have to add an M2C expensive motor mount to the V3 Granite BLX (which is pretty much the same as the big rock) since the stock motor mount bends on big jumps and messes up the gears and that part that you messed up on this video.
Yeah I do agree dude, I think it might be a bit much for the size, but definitely a great rc car. I do need to get one of those mounts because mine bent (I bent it back) so that's probably why it broke that little shaft. Thanks for watching dude 😀
@@MatthewSimm The lower control arms do break with time. I would replace them with RPM arms. Also the shock rod ends have pulled out on me once and a new shock shaft is needed since they are pressed on for some reason. The plastic spur gear, once it strips, can be replaced with the metal 4s spur gear. 👍
are parts still available for it? i just ordered the big rock v3 and i do plan to run it hard so i want to make sure it’s fixable when the differential does go out
@@MatthewSimm can you expound please... The Maxx is like double the price especially with the widemax. Might just wait for Arrma 4s Update by End of Year🤔🤔
@@3SonsRC after .onths of ownership, the maxx has been more durable. The arrma motor mount is shocking, one decent run at the skate park and it bent. But yeah the maxx does cost more. I'm super keen to see the Arrma 4s line 😀
I know it’s obviously an old video. But in case a new person is trying to choose, the Arrma has a lot of the smart features as well. It’s not as simple but it is there. Also the self righting feature has been known to blow out tires. I have both and I will always prefer Arrma to Traxxas. Traxxas spent too much time at the top of the brand list, they are and will always be overpriced. Sometimes, for giggles and sheets I like to buy the cheap Traxxas models and put all spektrum electronics in it. Add in the Traxxas telemetry and you got a hell of a car/truck. lol
I have the maxx v2 and i love it. It is just so good. I own a rustler vxl 4x4, should i get a big rock as well? I am torn between a big rock, a granite or a typhoon.
@@MatthewSimm I’ve never used a Arrma Big Rock. I have used a Maxx before but it was also while I was using my Xmaxx so the two weren’t really comparable. I’d probably go with a Maxx just for the fact of the clipless body. Another question for you real quick? What camera and mic do you use to make your videos?
Hi Bro , can i fit xmaxx spurgear #4996X ( the 54T still one ) to my Maxx ?? I need to adjust the gearing because of my bigger wheel .. Its very hard to find maxx parts here in my country , thats why iam looking for a substitute from other Traxxas ..
Hey bro I like you but your audio is wrecked. Some of us listen only using headphones, and you often go from only left , to right , and back and forth . Often I’m not even watching the screen . It’s not just you , many channels do this , I’m just letting you know because I like your content and I think you would gain many headphone using followers if you fixed your audio . Peace ✌🏾 and luck to you !
Hey dudeit may be the direction I'm speaking into the gopro, I play around with changing it to mono instead of stereo and see if that sounds better, cheers dude, glad you like the channel 😀
at 10:58 the Big Rock breaks and unusable, but until 12:41 Maxx still running on only the lower A-Arms broke. Should it be scoring for durability test instead? just IMO
nice vid! Im loving the Big Rock, close to getting one I think! I subscribed too :) Hey one question, how much run time roughly do you get out of the 3s with the BR? Cheers in advance.
Why do a test in different areas but then give a point to the looser based on an area already tested? I have no bias here to either as i'm looking to buy a new truck...5: - 5:35 (speed test) i'll carry on..
Its worth spending the extra 200 dollars for the max because the armma has plastic gears and it would cost you more than 200 dollars to upgrade to metal gear differentials. Good video mate 👍
Both trucks are great l. Big rock is cheaper to buy but parts to fix are more expensive. Traxxas is bigger money yo front but parts are cheap. Can’t go wrong either way. Nice videos
Absolutely love both. But for the price of the Maxx. I've upgraded the Big Rock to be more durable and perform better. The Big Rock is my pick 😁. But they both are great
@@Lucas-Family how’s the big rock doing? i ordered one yesterday so i been looking a bunch of videos of running it. i do plan to upgrade it if any parts go out.
Great vid, subscribed! How much does the wide kit change the handling of the maxx? Also, any downside to fitting the wide kit? Do the wider components bend easier?
No worries dude, glad you liked it, unfortunately it did break, but I'll give credit where it's due and say that for the price, it's still a really impressive rx car and still super durable but not quiet up to the maxx
Even though the big rock is very good when you address the pivot balls everywhere on the truck requires nearly full disassemble, the crappy diffs that go out every month then the spur gear plastic ect...
You get what you pay for, you buy cheap you buy twice, me and friend have V2 maxxes after selling our arrma outkasts and Mojave , arrma’s we’re always broke maxx’s just keep taking pounding after pounding
Thanks for the video. The Traxxas has the flipless body, but comes at 3x the cost of a replacement Arrma body. I do like the clip battery on the Traxxas, but I guess it limits the size of the batteries too. You got 47mph on the Big Rock stock motor on grass or on pavement? I really like your editing format by the way. Thanks for the comparison. I was thinking of getting the Traxxas Maxx too, but it seems so similar to the Traxxas Max as far as type of car. Thinking of maybe I should go for a different scale care or style. I think the Traxxas looks better too. I have the Big Rock and it's my only serious offroad RC but the color scheme is so boring. In your attempt to break the Maxx, your driving is too good! Haha. Does the Big Rock have lipo cuttoff too? Is it adjustable on the ESC?
@@MatthewSimm Hey Matt check out the M2C motor mount and chassis brace... Your plastic will last many times longer... That stock mount will bend on Ya... Chew your spurs for lunch!!!
Nice Video! Very high quality actually :) One big question tho: What battery did you use on the Big Rock and how long is your average Runtime with it? Is it the same or does it get alot less when bashing hard or doing speed runs?
Hey thank you 😀 I was using NXE 5400mah 3s batteries, they last about 30 minutes give or take. How you drive will determine how long the battery lasts, speed runs drain it the quickest due to constant throttle.
I think the comparisons should be done stock out of the box. So the maxx has the widemaxx kit and you may get different results. Great video! I’m team BIG ROCK!!
Besides the wide maxx, both car were stock dude 😀 but I did mention the widemaxx when comparing. Love the big rock! I may prefer the maxx but the just a personal choice, I still love the big rock and actually I've used it more then the maxx haha
@@MatthewSimm I was so excited about the big rock, I don’t own a maxx, I may change my mind if I did, so I can’t really give a good comparison to them. I really like the video idea of what your doing. I support you 100%. Keep up the great work!
Sorry to hear that mate, personally I keep having trouble with the clutch bolt snapping and a bent motor plate, but the maxx is as strong as day one, still barely any breakages
AWESOME! i cant believe that the MAXX took all that abuse! I was sure it would have broken on those jumps! But it didn't! AWESOME video! I might get a MAXX. One day..... haha
The maxx is by far the toughest out of the box rc car on the market. I honestly prefer it over the E-revo 2.0, UDR, and X-maxx. The maxx is the only rc car that you'll ever need.
@@gasolinediesel972 I agree with that. The maxx is a really great rc car. If I had to own one, it would be the maxx for sure. For this who dont know, it's actually hard to break unlike other rc's that break every other day.
@Riff Raff's RC I 100% agree. The big rock is great value for money, and the maxx should come stock with the widemaxx kit pre installed, or in the little baggy
Not really a right comparison between these two different rigs and for the price of the maxx minus will just get an outcast 6s that’ll take a beating all day and than some. Both rigs held up pretty sweet though cool video.
I think the big rock is a budget wide maxx. It’s transmission is just too weak out of the box between the plastic spur gear and differentials it just doesn’t last, where as the maxx transmission can take 6s
A couple of pieces of sticky backed velcro tape along the bottom of the body & on the chassis dirt shield will keep the Big Rocks body super firmly on.. You can crash it flat out & it'll never come off. If you're not fussed about using them again you can snip the rubber lanyards off the body clips to plug the body holes. In the pouring rain & mud puddles it'll keep your chassis bone dry.! Unfortunately though, it won't stop your servo & ESC from committing suicide... Nothing will because they're made from dreams & good intentions..
The big rock couldn’t stand the regular testing before it was broken but somehow it’s rated to be just as durable as the maxx that was sent and abused after the big rock had already broken? That doesn’t make sense.
i wouldn’t say the big rock can’t handle the “regular testing” i actually think it can handle way more than ruglar back flips and jumping i own both and as much as i like the maxx it’s just givin me way more expensive problems, i definitely think you guys should try driving a big rock and see that it is really tuff. again more money= better but again = more expensive repairs
I think everyone should have both in their collection. Two great RCs.
Totally agree 😀
I am looking at getting Big Rock for that very reason.

I have a maxx, summit 1/16, ford mustang and ford gt vxl 4-tec 2.0's and feel as if traxxas has a better medium-small scale selection while arma has the better large scale selection otherwise you can't go wrong with either brand.
I’m interested in buying the black truck can u tell me how please?
Man and I thought the Maxx was way bigger than the arrma bigrock but I guess they are pretty much the same size.
It is bigger
Great durability video! Do one on the vortex please!
Maxx all day 4 me. 😆 good basing mate.
Cheers dude and same here, I prefer the maxx 😀
@@MatthewSimm Yup, that shaft will break again with that flimsy motor mount. I know the M2C mount is like $80 but it's worth it.
Yeah I'll definitely be getting one, I was shocked when it happened. Thought besides that, I can't find any other mods that really need doing.
@@joseCalderon1976Why not get the hot racing motor mount it's around $20.
Really good review and objective. Thanks!
Glad you liked it 😀
The stock differential gear on the big rock will without a doubt go out on you. Then you have to put a metal one in and it will last a lot longer.
Yeah I agree 😀 I'm going to get metal ones
@@MatthewSimm M2C racing only parts to buy! They make a whole motor mount/diff brace all locked in. 7075 aluminum, best bashers parts I m the market!
are parts still available for it? i just ordered the big rock v3 and i do plan to run it hard so i want to make sure it’s fixable when the differential does go out
After putting in my metal diffs, aluminum shocks, shock tower braces, and roof skid plates, my big rock is a beast
Months later, more than one bash in, which one is more durable? Please explain
The maxx
Very nice comparison man! 👍😉
Thanks dude, what one do you prefer?
@@MatthewSimm I’ve never used a Arrma Big Rock. I have used a Maxx before but it was also while I was using my Xmaxx so the two weren’t really comparable. I’d probably go with a Maxx just for the fact of the clipless body. Another question for you real quick? What camera and mic do you use to make your videos?
I just got my maxx in solar flare colour from PM hobby craft :)
that's it...... I'm getting both, after I get a Mojave.
Nice dude!
Nice both are very good how bout your traxxas slash 4x4 vs arrma senton 4x4 3s
I have my eyes on the senton! I already have the slash 😀
What batter was used in the maxx?
Great video!! Thank you. But wouldn’t the Hoss be a betterCompetitor
Thanks dude and probably but I don't have the hoss haha and it's a good comparison what you can get for the money 😀
Kick ass video and review!!
Might be best comparison video of any two bashers I’ve ever seen....
🍻✌️👍
Big sub
at 10:58 the Big Rock breaks and unusable, but until 12:41 Maxx still running on only the lower A-Arms broke. Should it be scoring for durability test instead? just IMO
The maxx did score for the durability test?
nice vid! Im loving the Big Rock, close to getting one I think! I subscribed too :) Hey one question, how much run time roughly do you get out of the 3s with the BR? Cheers in advance.
I am curious 🤨 as well about run time.
@@fredrikg934 🤷♂️ no reply yet! hopefully he will reply

Where buy to 300 dlls? Thanks for the store name
Been waiting for this one!
Thanks for watching Jessica 😀 what's your pick?
What is the batter life on each?
Wicked fun hadta sub to your channel Great enthusiasm.
Thank Craig 😀
Bro I LOVED this vid! Huge fan of comparisons
Appreciate it dude 😀 I want to do more!
Another great video mate, I love the Maxx it's a tank.
Totally agree dude! Such a beast 😀
I think its worth it, yes, I prefer the maxx though so maybe my opinion is bias.
You're gonna be into it roughly $140 to upgrade to steel diffs, still a good chunk of change saved over the MAXX.
Amazing video brother 👍🏻
Appreciate dude, what one do you prefer?
@@MatthewSimm obviously the $300 once 🤩🤩
Great video!
I‘m kind of leading towards the big rock because it’s so much cheaper and mine is incredibly tough
It's definitely an awesome rc car for the price! I love it 😀
Both trucks are great l. Big rock is cheaper to buy but parts to fix are more expensive. Traxxas is bigger money yo front but parts are cheap. Can’t go wrong either way. Nice videos
Totally agree dude, both awesome cars!
Tanks for watching 😀
Absolutely love both. But for the price of the Maxx. I've upgraded the Big Rock to be more durable and perform better. The Big Rock is my pick 😁. But they both are great
My awesome wife picked up a Big Rock for mel. I'll keep it stock for now cause 4s is pushing it past my skill level for now....lol
Do the wider components bend easier?
hey thanks for subscribing dude :) from my experience, it has effected the strength of the rc car just made it handle better.
Would take either car but my maxx did 46mph on road on 3s so it should do about 53on 4s but not sure
Yeah it must just be my maxx but I can't get it over 47mph 🤔
Sweet vid. Thanks! Have a big rock on the way :D
Nice 😀 you'll love it dude!
At the end you said X maxx instead of maxx😂 your awesome on reviews of rc cars I always come to watch when I need a answer
woow can't believe the big rock broke. guess im going to have to get me a maxx soon. :D thanks for review comparison.
No worries dude, glad you liked it, unfortunately it did break, but I'll give credit where it's due and say that for the price, it's still a really impressive rx car and still super durable but not quiet up to the maxx
For me is the durability worth 230$ more? I cant justify spending 800$ here in canada for it
Even though the big rock is very good when you address the pivot balls everywhere on the truck requires nearly full disassemble, the crappy diffs that go out every month then the spur gear plastic ect...
I love the maxx. Have both and bash mostly with my maxx and hoss
Oh nice!
Great video bro. Putting to the test
Thanks bro! Which do you prefer?
You get what you pay for, you buy cheap you buy twice, me and friend have V2 maxxes after selling our arrma outkasts and Mojave , arrma’s we’re always broke maxx’s just keep taking pounding after pounding
Traxxas always so overpriced
Hey thanks for watching dude 😀
I got 47mph on the grass on day one.
Yeah dude, It has lipo cutoff but I'm not too sure if it's adjustable hmm
On the Big Rock - add some fluorescent stickers!
If it’s based on top speed how does it go to Arrma? The category wasn’t top speed with price in mind. That’s a head shaker.
What actually ended up breaking on the big rock? Stripped diff or spur?? Maxx tough 😁
Gear from the spur to the rear diff
@@MatthewSimm Hey Matt check out the M2C motor mount and chassis brace... Your plastic will last many times longer... That stock mount will bend on Ya... Chew your spurs for lunch!!!
Yeah I've seen those, I should really get one!
Think I'd rather have the better shocks, 4s system, stronger drivetrain, tsm, parts availability, and so on over the cheap big rock.
Think it’s not fair to take the maxx up with big rock , seems like hoss would be more fair but great video
Thanks for this video bro. 11:43.. so awesome! forget about the Xmaxx? I'm thinking of buying this crazy truck.💪💥.. X is too big anyways😂
Haha thanks dude 😀 I love both but the maxx is a lot easier than the xmaxx (carrying, using two batteries etc..)
Nice Video! Very high quality actually :)
One big question tho: What battery did you use on the Big Rock and how long is your average Runtime with it? Is it the same or does it get alot less when bashing hard or doing speed runs?
Hey thank you 😀
I was using NXE 5400mah 3s batteries, they last about 30 minutes give or take. How you drive will determine how long the battery lasts, speed runs drain it the quickest due to constant throttle.
@@MatthewSimm thanks
@@MatthewSimm and one last question: How important woul you say are hardcase batteries?
Nice comparison 👍
Thanks mate 😀
Very good video...fun and welcoming
Thank you Jesse
@@MatthewSimm respec from Trinidad 🇹🇹
I must have gotten a bad Big Rock. Nothing but problems and breaks every run. The maxx never breaks
Sorry to hear that mate, personally I keep having trouble with the clutch bolt snapping and a bent motor plate, but the maxx is as strong as day one, still barely any breakages
Gear video. Maxx for me! Love mine 😍
Thanks bro, yeah same, I love my maxx 😀
Definitely a great video I like the maxx it's big brother is definitely a great basher
100% dude! The maxx and xmaxx are my favourite bashers!
AWESOME! i cant believe that the MAXX took all that abuse! I was sure it would have broken on those jumps! But it didn't! AWESOME video! I might get a MAXX. One day..... haha
It's truly a beast! I love it, I'm surprised too, it's that only time I've done anything like that with it lol
Hey cheers dude, glad you liked the video, I know it's not the most even comparison but that's the beauty of it 😀
@@MatthewSimm keep the videos coming buddy good stuff :)
Thanks dude 😀
I think the big rock is a budget wide maxx.
It’s transmission is just too weak out of the box between the plastic spur gear and differentials it just doesn’t last, where as the maxx transmission can take 6s
I've only ever had a problem with the spur gear and the bending of the motor mount but I believe m2c make a good upgrade for it 😀
A couple of pieces of sticky backed velcro tape along the bottom of the body & on the chassis dirt shield will keep the Big Rocks body super firmly on..
Nothing will because they're made from dreams & good intentions..
i would say the big rock is more like a hoss and mass is like the outcast
Yeah probably but I still think it's good to compare some cheaper cars to more expensive cars 😀
@@MatthewSimm that too. either way both are great! i love my big rock and i want the maxx!
And how quickly those prices have changed....
Yeah! 😞
The big rock couldn’t stand the regular testing before it was broken but somehow it’s rated to be just as durable as the maxx that was sent and abused after the big rock had already broken? That doesn’t make sense.
Yeah the big rock is not as strong as the Maxx it makes no sense
i wouldn’t say the big rock can’t handle the “regular testing” i actually think it can handle way more than ruglar back flips and jumping i own both and as much as i like the maxx it’s just givin me way more expensive problems, i definitely think you guys should try driving a big rock and see that it is really tuff. again more money= better but again = more expensive repairs
Traxxas Hoss vs. Big Rock seems like a more reasonable comparison.
The Maxx is a tank
Sweeeeeeet vid Matty!!
Hey thanks bro 😀
