Thank you so much for this video! I really appreciate what you're doing to help our community with this crisis that has spread nationaly and world wide.
I do hope that this family that you've touched can find peace in the knowledge that their story will save lives.
May those who've passed from drugs, alcohol, and mental torment rest in peace! 🙏🏽

Thank you so much for watching. We are doing all we can to show where the gaps exist and how we can do better as a society and a system.

This is such an excellent video especially the interview with the adopted parents. As a former social worker and foster parent/ guardian, the parents, especially the mom depicts the reality of abused children, their families, the state system, the educational system and all the challenges extremely well.

Thank you so much for covering this horrific situation.
It is unacceptable what Whatcom and Bellingham officials are allowing.

Thank you for this video, Ginny. My daughter went to school in Bellingham and it struck me as an affluent, beautiful area. Unfortunately, many affluent communities want to turn a blind eye to the drug epidemic, to homelessness, and resist establishing resources and services that could save lives. One death is too many! 😢

Thank you, Julie I would agree. The people who live there are tired. Hopefully we can create some change!

This video needs more exposure! Thank you for telling the story that most aren’t willing to address even existing. And now the main encampment is behind the WalMart

So sad. It's tougher and tougher to be parents these days with all the influencers and influences, and this interview truly shows how exponentially harder it is for foster parents and the system failing these kids.
    Thx for the doc.

This story hit me hard in so many different ways. I was put in foster care at 4 and adopted at 10 and than back in the system at 13 because I was running away. At 17 I ran away to my bio mom.I also grew up in bellingham wa and still currently there. My mother also had a biological daughter so my childhood was rough. I became a heroin addict way later in life and than fentanyl. I'm now clean but I was also a functional addict and nobody even knew I was an addict except for other addicts.

That's what all addicts think. Trust and believe, there are people that knew that said nothing. For various reasons.

I'm so incredibly saddened for the parents. The state of things is devastating not only to the communities, the businesses but also the people that are being "well-meaninged" to death. 😢

You highlight an ongoing problem that we have been replacing the real experts with book trained experts across the spectrum for some time, and we seem to hold a blatant lack of respect - not only for learned experience - but for the loved ones who care the most. In the case of children, we criminalize parents and step parents. In addiction, we don’t listen to those who have successfully moved beyond their lowest points. In domestic violence, where research has shown that men and women abuse for different reasons, we have insisted on applying like responses because we don’t want to be seen as sexist, and we’ve replaced strength-based lay-advocacy with professionals who know how to properly label victims for the government instead of being able to see their behavioral side-effects as a foundation of strength that needs to be readjusted for new and healthier situations. I just moved back to Washington - ironically only after I wasn’t sure I still wanted to - and am broken hearted over the conditions I see people living in daily, in all neighborhoods, while people label it “compassion.”

Why didn't your solution save your son?
Let's talk about "intentional" parenting. Why was Emily in the camp to begin with?
We don't have a lock down mental health facility in Whatcom County but we most certainly have mental health support and treatment facilities. I'm sorry this child died. But blaming everyone else for it isn't the solution. Incarceration doesn't work. Ginny Burton is living proof of that. Recovery doesn't happen without the willingness of the addict. That's a proven fact.

@AnnaKerns-vq6ib my heart really goes out to you after our talk today. I feel sad thinking about how upset you are, Kim. I want you to know that I was invited to Bellingham, I didn't push my way there. And I think you're not clear on my position. What I believe today is that I will never be able to reason with you. My conclusion is that it's a very hard place to be living in your mind. The amount of anger you expressed is something I used to be familiar with. Someone must have hurt you somewhere along the way. That kind of anger comes from pain. I truly wish you well. Even though I said you are crazy, I think you just care about things and don't really know where to go to solve them. Maybe one of these days I can interview you about your perspective because it obviously comes from somewhere.
