    Finally, I have been ruining pinion gears on two of my reels, that are of a much cheaper variety than these, because the reel engages during hard cast. Thank you for being the first to explain it at the 26 min mark!

    To abu revo defence, try to take out the magnets and leave only 3 or 2, then you get much better casting
    performance out of it... with all the magnet in place it is overbraked even at zero setting!

    Great review of the Komodo.It does feel like a truck, powerful. My brother had some nice yellowfin on the big B-2 stealth bomber one!How do you feel Boca bearings would do in them. And what's the scoop on sealed bearings.Do you oil them at all or run them dry?I have bean cleaning all my stock bearings in lighter fluid overnight and taking an air can to them,then putting one drop of TSi oil in them and it works sickly good most of the time.Please advise on aftermarket bearings.Thanks, Sal

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rubber seald bearings may be able to have the seals popped out witout damaging them. Lube as you would normally and replace the seal. Be careful about using lighter fluid. Some bearings use cages that can react with chemicals. And long exposure could damage them. Just a heads up. Just like rubbing alcohol melts the dc brake on metanium dc's...and brake cleaner doesn't.....ask me how i friggin know..lmao

    New to Musky casting/jigging and wondering what you might suggest currently for something to handle 65lb braid and 7oz+ baits. Will a 300 suffice or would a 400 be a better choice

    • @garymarch4711
      @garymarch4711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      400 and 80lb braid... a few backlashes and that 7+ oz bait will cause that 65lb to snap... sending your bait off where you'll likely never see it again. Some guys use 100lb for this reason. If you go 100lb, a 500 sized would be in order.

  • @Tide12NC
    @Tide12NC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just ordered the Lexa 300 HD. I wish I had crossed this video first. No bait stores seemed to carry the reel so I could examine it. After seeing the 400’s size to the 300, and the metal piece on the 400 vs the plastic piece on the 300. I believe it would have been worth the extra $50. The reel will go on the Daiwa DX 8ft Heavy/fast rod. It’s for throwing 10” swimbaits and A-rig at Lake Guntersville. I’m sure I’ll love the 300, but it’s truly a big bait rod and reel, so now I’m wishing I’d have went bigger.

    Appreciate the reviews! I have been looking for a new musky specific reel, and I hate how the disengaging levelwind reels cast (compared to like a Calcutta 400b, it casts super easy with a non-disengaging levelwind). I have had three pinion gears strip, and two spool pins break on two lexa 400. Very frustrating. The handle falls forward and engages midcast. The tranx sure gets good reviews, but I may even lean towards a komodo. I'll keep watching!

    I recently ordered a Shimano Tranx 400 from amazon prime. I got the low gear ratio, so I went ahead and ordered the power handle for it. When I took off the double paddle handle I noticed my reel didn’t have the star drag seal. Aside from helping the reel be more water resistant do you think not having that seal could hinder performance? I’m still gonna order the part from shimano and probably won’t use the reel until I get the part. Btw I’m really glad I saw this video, if not I wouldn’t have known about that seal!

    Hey, Awesome review, I'm in a dilemma right now, in Mx we are catching 30-40 inch Shortfin Corvinas, and 30-40 inch Snooks on 4 1/2" X-raps, I throw them on a Daiwa Tatula type HD, Calcutta 250, And Calcutta 250 Te DCs, but, I keep getting spooled and I would like to upgrade to a Tranx, the thing is I don't know what size to buy, The 300 doesn't have the line capacity I'm looking for, and the 400 does, but, I think I'll sacrifice the casting distance with the 400, will i be able to throw 1/2 oz. lures with the 400?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      THe tranx 300 and 400 won't cast anything like the TE DC going down to half an ounce. I don't plan on fishing anything lighter than an ounce with the tranx to be honest. I'm sure half ounce lures will be ok but not in the same league as the dc and Tat.

    This video got me to subscribe. I really like all the info and vibe of your videos. I noticed that some reels have a centrifugal break or magnetic break. Do you personally prefer one over the other or does it not make a difference to you personally?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! Im glad you enjoy them! I bounce back and for in terms of what I prefer. And all braking systems do the same thing... Apply braking (duh). But they vary greatly. And "come in" at different strengths at different times. So different brakes may behave differently depending on speed and aerodynamics and conditions. In general I prefer a wide range externally adjustable mag break. I really like the ivcb flying arm abu brake in terms of friction brakes. But like the svs infinity combined with the shimano feel better overall. A curado with ivcb 4 would be awesome. A tranx with mag force Z or DC would be epic... Wait until you see me cut pieces out of the curado DC in order to send shimano a message to bring DC back to saltwater reels (Trinidad dc was the best ever)

As an Aussie they seem to be good reels well on paper anyway and from the reviews I've read. Daiwa viento or the Megaforce or magforce...I had a pair of vientos when they came out.....kinda cool....but I find i can just reach under the reel and flick the drag star with my finger to take up slack line instea of using the twitching bar.

    Im really getting excited and Trying to become a nerd on internals! Lol
    Any extra wisdom will be much appreciated. Which is better, brass gears or stainless steel gears for both (wear and tear) and (corrosion )??

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol same here :)
      Well brass on brass and stainless on stainless are strong as hell depending on size and cut. Corrosion shouldn't be an issue with either. As a nerd ya head off those sorta things :)
      Combine dissimilar metals or let run exposed with no lube and wear rates go up.

    I cleaned and lubricated 2 of my bait casters and now for some reason on both reels i can not get the drag tight enough and will slip. I didn't put grease there but it won't hold. Why is that happening?

      Hey peter...Sorry just seeing this comment now. try arranging the belleville washers in such a way that they are nested (( and not ()
      What reels.....you may need to make sure the ar clutch sleave is keyed to the top drag stack washer. (some are keyed)
      or there may be a thin washer above the ar clutch sleeve if the reel has a bearing on top of it...it may need a washer on top. If you haven't figured it out yet. Ping me on my tackle advisors facebook

    Do you think the Tranx 400 would work as a long distance surf casting reel for pompano on a 12 foot surf rod? Mostly cast 90 yards or less with an4 oz lead and high low bait rig.

      I have them in the lexas and tranx 500. Noticed an increase in the lexas..but that's because they come with greased bearings with fixed shields from the factory. I didn't notice any increase on the 500. Not a worth while upgrade on the tranx reels imho

      I like fast reels for bottom fishing......and slow reels for high torque for jigging. The PG being a 5.8 is still fairly quick. I'd go 400 pg and order the single handle separately from the HG. amzn.to/2eRRUao

    First thanks for the detailed review. I’ve been bottom fishing in Monterey Bay with a Curado 200 high speed (30” per crank) and find in a little under powered and possibly slow for my application. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what I need. I slow drop keeping my thumb on the spool to stay in contact with the jig. I get a lot of bites on the drop or as soon as I touch bottom. Then I’m speed reeling to catch up with the ling that just bombed out of the rocks to attack. Maybe a longer handle would give the power difference I’m looking for, maybe a different gear setup. Not sure really. I fish braid line between 12 and 30lb depending on the structure so the Lexa 300 should have plenty of capacity. I also have a handle from a revo toro NaCl that I will put on the lexa. I had a revo toro NaCl and loved it, I could cast weightless or 10” deep divers with the same reel. I lost the NaCl in a kayak accident so I never used it much in the salt so I’m not sure how it would work in this scenario. I’ve been told a 40” ling will bust my gear. So far I’ve only caught 25” fish and I would like a little more power but mainly for quicker hook sets. So in your opinion is the 300 ok or should I go 400?
    Btw I liked your review on the cast distances. I would be interesting to see a casting review with weightless baits, like a fluke and hook type setup. I feel like the lexa might be the best of both worlds and the beast would probably perform better. Regards,

      How long of a rod are you using. And what's its action. If using a short stick under 6' with lots of give. It may make it difficult to move fish. Stepping up to a rod over 7' with a bit more grunt in the upper third may be more helpful than stepping up to a 36" inch per turn reel. Know what i mean? I'm not a big bottom fishing guy. And never targeted ling. But using squishy rods targeting blackfish can make it tought getting em out of wrecks. Longer rods also move much more line on the hookset. I use 8 footers on my yak in fw. The 7'6 teremar is a great bottom fishing rod. amzn.to/2zlgGLI
      I also use the 7' which is a tad lighter. great tip and action for bottom fishing with tons of power. TO me the most important thing about bottom fishing is speed and support for pulling out snags. Tranx kinda gets the nod there can't remember how fast the Komodo goes. But thats another powerful reel.
      Thanks, the beast does a bit better with light baits. But a 200 sized reel makes it a bit more manageable say when throwing 5" finS.

      I've been using a 7' inshore berkly rod its MF action and power is M. I should probably step up to MH or H power. I have a Shimano TDR in 8' MH that I will try this week and see if that makes a difference. I'm still getting more hookups and I've consistently been catching more fish than my friends. I think it’s because I’m using braid and I can feel light bites better. Most bites are just subtle changes or a slight vibration on the line. Then I speed reel tight and hookset. Sometimes it’s just 2 or 3 head shakes and their off or I might even crank 10’ of line with them on. I think I can definitely benefit from a rod with more power and length. My roommate has a Lamiglas 7’6” that I might try, feels like MH but it’s not listed on the rod.
      The best way I can describe the problem is when I’m speed reeling up on the fish I feel under powered, or maybe it’s a balance thing (it feel strange to speed reel 4 cranks at home now) with Could also be I’m reeling a load onto the rod because its M power when I should just be setting the hook sooner with a more powerful rod. I’ll have to go put my hands on a few rods. I like the inshore I’m using because it feels light in the tip (well balanced). My TDR is not and the Lamiglas could be better and I know I’m picky enough that in the long run I will want something well balanced. I like my TDR for dragging weight or applications where I’m not hold the rod lightly for long periods of time. If that makes sense.
      Lings aren’t the only thing I plan to catch with this setup. A multitude of bottom fish and hopefully some halibut. Anything with will hit a finesse type jig presentation.

    How is the cranking power of the tranx 300 compared with the 400? Is there a difference due the bigger spool or not? I'm doubting wich one to buy, it's for pike angling in europe. I'm also doubting for the HG for more line retrieve speed during the hookset. Any suggestions? Regards and happy angling!

    Awesome! I'm in the market right now looking for a low profile that I can use for pier fishing. Im looking for lexa vs tranx. Still undecided, what do you recommend? For trout and redfish fishing. You got a new subscriber!

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks MAN!!
      For straight winching durability with a levelwind..In a low pro...Can't beat the Tranx. It's all about the x ship....Dual bearing supported pinions on a baitcaster...And dual bearing supported handle shafts are 2 of the best ways to make a reel more durable. If Daiwa made An aluminum steez in a 300, 400 and 500 size......Then I'd say go with the daiwa :)
      But until then.....Tranx all the way.
      If you're gonna buy. Consider buying from the Amazon or ebay links..Purchases made through them pay me a small commish since I'm an amazon and ebay affiliate.

      Tackle Advisors nice! The tranx 300 is not that big for trout and redfish right? Im currently using my td daiwa zillion and just thinking of getting a new one im looking for size 200 like new curado k and chronarch g. But this tranx is look really solid but size start at 300.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely a bigger reel. It's a curado 300 size.
      Whenever I hear redfish I think of the ones we get up here. Upwards of 40+ lbs.
      Out of the larger low pros. The tranx is the best all around. But if you plan on throwing light baits. Under 1/2 an ounce. The Zillion will be a better choice.
      I was throwing very small deadly dicks at pots for mahi just the other day on the lexa 300. Not the ideal sized reel for it.
      Heavy spool to get goin on lighter stuff.

      Tackle Advisors i see thats what im thinking it will be over kill im throwing jigheads lest than 1/2 oz. i wanna try something than my td zillion which is still in perfect shape. Do you recommend something that close to my zillion? Also I'm planning to get another one for bait and weight bottom fishing. I already have shimano calcutta 400b.
