Whether the song was originally written to be a sexual expression is besides the point because it seems that it was so for these gentlemen and if changing the pronoun made the song speak to them more profoundly then I thank them for doing so because it made their performance do what all art tries to do - tell the truth.

It's about going to a concert and feeling that the artist (in this case, Don McLean) is so good and their performance is so amazing and personal that you feel the artist is speaking directly to you, even though it's actually a concert for everyone in the audience. It's like if you go to a concert with thousands of people, but the performance affects you so deeply and personally that it seems like the artist must somehow know who you are and tells all the details of your personal life in their songs, even though you've never met. And even though nobody else in the audience knows it, you feel embarrassed because the artist seems to be telling everyone about you and your deepest feelings. The artist is so good that they "kill" you (softly) with their song(s). Maybe you've had the experience of hearing in concert, a musician or singer who has many recordings, but somehow they do all YOUR favorite songs and it's so moving that it makes you feel that the artist is doing it just for you. In this case, the writer had not even ever heard the artist before, but the music was so good and the performance so touching that it "killed". It's not about sex, it's about the reaction one could feel to an artist's incredibly beautiful musical expression and the deep emotional connection felt by you in the audience, alone in your thoughts but nevertheless feeling deeply and personally connected to the artist. In my opinion it's not necessary to change the pronoun no matter who sings the song, but I don't have a problem with it. Nice performance, anyway.
