You can try capping the substrate with an inert one to prevent nutrients leeching into the water column.

string algae is strongly promoted by the nitrate levels, i suggest using tweazers and taking as much as u can and do a 20% water change

Floating plants do wonders for that problem. Red root floaters, Sylvania, Water Lettuce. Stay away from Duck weed :)

Throwing in hornworth or guppy grass (that act as a floating plants) is also an option. My shrimps love crawling in them and with exccessive nutrients in water, they grow like crazy.

Floating plants go out of control with my tanks, especially Water Lettuce.. I guess I try some frogbit. Sylvania is so ugly lol.

@@NewYorkShrimpKeepingYou can take it all out once things stabilise. Guppy Grass is also a great shout

Could you hang some pothos from one of the edges? My tanks all have pothos in the HOB filters, or directly sitting in the tank.
    Just a thought. Good luck🤞

I don’t like using Pothos in shrimp tanks because the shrimp will climb on to the roots and jump out of the tank. I also don’t use HOB in shrimp tanks. There’s no need for mechanical filtration in shrimp tanks. It’s overkill.

@ I agree on the “no HOB filters for shrimp”, I use sponge filters to get the extra surface area for feeding. But I am admittedly a little shocked about “shrimp jumpers”. I have not yet had a shrimp do that to me 😱. But that would certainly answer the question of “to pothos, or not to pothos” in your tanks 😅
