  • We visit the Elephant retirement park in Chiang Mai, showing you the experience, with the elephants and explaining how they are kept in comparison to other places. This is an ethical elephant park and I highly recommend it!

    Elephants in Thailand, there are many misconceptions about elephants especially in Thailand. Elephants has been used in warfare for centuries. ( Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos) they are also used as an important mode of transportation, logging and ceremonial. Naturally, they were caught in the wild and also bred in captivity. Their life is totally different from African elephants. They form a special bond with their mahouts ( caretakers) and are usually paired for life. Many if not most of the domesticated elephants will not survive in the wild, thus we have elephant sanctuary all over Thailand. Thank you for visiting this particular sanctuary, the income supports the wages of the mahouts and staff that look after the elephants. Naturally there were elephants that were abused, not many.

    thanks for the video, spent a lot of time in chiang mai last year.. and staying here again right now.. but never thought about going to see the elephants as I didnt wanna support any place in which the elephants might not be held in a good way. I didn't inform myself about it as you did.. therefore I did not know that there are actually places worth visiting and supporting :) gonna have to take a look some day and mabye create a video myself to spread the word :)

    that's interesting about them being penned in at night. we went to a different sanctuary in chiang mai recently that had just opened back up after being closed for a year and they said the elephants just wandered the property during that time it was closed. There was also farmland nearby it seemed but maybe they weren't using pesticides or something

    "Feels like a dinosaur" "She was born in 1987 so she's quite an old girl" ... Me in my 30s, my knees aching for no apparent reason, watching this: yeah sometimes I really do feel prehistoric 😂 Anyway lovely to see those elephants looking so happy and enjoying a life where they get to make their own decisions rather than having to perform for people. I did elephant riding in India when I was 19 as part of a group tour and I feel really sad now thinking about it - I'm very glad now that everyone is so much more aware of what a miserable life that is for an elephant. Hopefully the more tourists opt for places like the retirement park, the more likely there will be a ban on elephant riding in the future.

  • @LC-xp6tq

    I am curious about how many times the elephants take a bath. This park has morning visit and afternoon visit, which means the elephants there need to be bathed twice every day. Do they really need twice bath?

    Why is it ok to ride horses and get them to do all kinds of unnatural things but it's not ok to ride elephants?

    • @Joelfriend
      @Joelfriend  ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I’m not sure how ethical horse riding is but the big thing is to get a wild elephant to be ridden it has to be beaten and drugged up so it doesn’t harm us humans 😊

  • @nutcoal8003

    I like your vlog a lot. But please get this correct information... Thai government doesn't want a lot of money from tourists by using elephants in tourism industry. Many Thai families have been feeding elephants since the past if you check Thai history. Because the cost of feeding is very very high, so those families, organisations and Thai government must do activities under the law to make the elephants survive.
