  • Pauline Oliveros' unique approach to making music, called Deep Listening, prioritized inclusivity and the subjective experiences of individuals, rather than her own 'singular genius' as a composer.

DOPE of you to add subtitles!! i'm a hearing person but i have some trouble processing spoken language at times, so i'm happy you gave the effort to add that in!

I love Oliveros. I stumbled across Deep Listening on accident. Once that album kicks in, there’s no going back. It’s so immersive, you get lost in the sonic landscape. It’s fascinating that they recorded it in a cistern. GREAT video I never knew any of her history or herstory.

the Deep Listening album was my introduction to Oliveros, and is still my favourite recording of hers I've heard.

We did some of Oliveros’ sonic meditations last semester here in Berlin :)
Really agree with your point about “women composers”.

As someone that is into harsher sounding music, Pauline's electronic music is a spiritual experience. 'The Day I Disconnected The Erase Head and Forgot to Reconnect It' is a 32 minute track that feels like a portal to a new plane is being ripped open in front of me. I'm not sure if I've ever heard something that controls my energy the way that track does.

    Another brilliant video!
I knew about Wendy Carlos, I had heard of Daphne Oram, but Pauline Oliveros is new to me - I'm going to have to find some of her recordings now!

On my permanent quest to something ambient and electronic I came across 'Bye bye butterflies' and it hit me on the head (in a good way )) I was shocked by the fact that someone created like this. This track sends some images right into my mind of some skyscrapers falling and our society crumbling. I don't know if that was Oliveros intention but I'm so glad that I'm familiar with this track now.

I've loved bye bye butterfly ever since I first heard it. I'm floored she wasn't looking to create some big masterpiece, since to me her early work has always been amazing, maybe even more compelling than early Riley or Reich. I'm off to read up some more on Oliveros now lol. Thank you!

Like with all your videos I found this interesting and have been given some food for thought. But personally I've got the sort of mind that is kind of missing most of the filters that typical people have and thus I'm constantly hyper-aware of sound all around me all the time. It's nice to know that some people see this as something to be striven for.

I agree that she’s not been represented in the best way. I think it’s funny when advocating for her inclusion, that we don’t even mention Halim El-Dabh in the history of tape music. Predates Oliveros, Reich, and Riley.

I think women have been really overlooked and not respected. I definitely think its sexism, look at how Delia Derbyshire (Dr. Who theme) isn't even credited for the theme she created!
