I'm trying, but i really can't think of a shot that's impossible on a tripod..., but there are shit-loads that cannot be achieved handheld. So maybe it is the case that the problem has little to do with tripods, per se, and a lot to do with a sub-set of photographers who, for reasons specific to each individual, have a tendency to unnecessarily over-utilize them.

A tripod is needed when unable to get proper focus handheld based on slowness of shutter speed and obviously varries by photograpgher's skill level.

Great take! I totally agree with this sentiment. With exceptions I find tripods lock you into conventional framing, the shots most people would take. Being unencumbered you can creatively exploring different angles and find those shots few would. Such as that reflection you captured beautifully.
